We brought home a little kitty for our DS's 15th birthday yesterday. She's about 3 months old and was a barn cat.

A few minutes ago, my DS noticed her bleeding from the rectrum right after she went potty.:(

Of course, tomorrow we will call the vet but is there a chance her stools might just be harder from the new food we're giving her versus what she had out in the barn?

My DS is SO upset right now so I would appreciate any advice.

Sorry that I don't have any answers for you, but I just wanted to give you a

If she was a barn cat it could be parasites too... I'm sure she'll be fine tonight... the best thing you can do is take her to the vet tomorrow! Good luck.

I wish I could help, but I don't know much about kittys...is there a Vet site that might have answers? Like a webMD, but for animals? I'll look around for you...

If you are really worried then does the vet have a 24 hour emergency number? Our does. I'm sure the kitty will be fine though. I've lost count of the number of times I have taken our cats to the vet only to be told they are fine.

Take it to the vet tomorrow and have it checked out. It may take a while for the kitten to adjust to the new food.

Make sure you bring in a stool sample.

 If the little one is still drinking and nibbling at food that's a really good sign. Hang in there!

I'm sure its probably Cocidia (not sure I spelled that right) but it is VERY contagious to any other kitties you might have. It is a parasite and its treated with medicine and she should be fine.

There is another parasite not quite as bad but I can't think of the name...

If she is still eating, playing and drinking water I think she will be fine until tomorrow but I'm not a vet nor do I play one, I just have 8 kitties and am going by past experience. If you feel uncomfortable definatly call your vet. But definatly take her in to get her on meds tomorrow!!

I hope kitty is ok. I would take her to the vet in the morning. Hopefully she just needs some antibiotics.:D

I'd like to echo what Beauty said. It's probably just Coccidia, but take her to the vet anyway. The vet will probably want to test your new friend for all sorts of fun things like Feline Leukemia as well as FIV (like human HIV but only in kitties),tapeworm and a whole host of other things. Make sure you get a fresh stool sample before you take her in and tell the vet she was a barn kitty before you got her. He'll probably want to give her her rabies and feline parvo (I think that's what it's called) shots and make sure she is 100% healthy.

Good luck with your new friend. :)

We found our youngest when he was about three months old living in a warehouse. We noticed the same thing about two days after we brought him home (the blood), plus he was very lethargic. Turns out he had a fever of 104 (about three or four above normal for a cat) as well. Our vet started him on his series of kitten shots that same day and gave us some amoxicillin drops to give him. Within 48 hours he was a new cat. He's now nine months and sitting on my desk watching me type this :D

If her gums are pink and she's not lethargic or dehydrated, she'll be ok until tomorrow. Don't waste your time searching for answers on the internet. You can find a list of the 50 things it COULD be, but you still won't know until she gets an exam and a fecal.

ETA: Tell your son that a vet said not to worry. Almost all outdoor cats have some sort of poopy problem. I would limit contact with your son and other pets, though, like someone else suggested.

Thank you everyone for your encouraging replies. Gosh, I have three grown cats....you'd think I'd remember little kitty problems!! LOL.

We never had gotten a cat from a barn so that's why I was rather concerned.

I think she will (hopefully) be OK after a trip to our Vet tomorrow.

I'm trying to talk Danny (my DS) into naming the kitty, DISzy after all my wonderful kitty buddies around here!! He said he'd think about it but I've already started calling her that!! I think it will stick!!::yes::
