PLEASE Help me

Again, I pose the point that no company I know of just lets brand new employees have the reimbursement benefit. There is usually a training/waiting period before you can start getting reimbursed for classes, and a slightly longer waiting period before you can be reimbursed for a full fledged degree program.

I could be waaaay off here, but I'm thinking during the interview the scene went something like :

OP: I'm interested in pursuing an MBA in ______ [insert subject] will the company tuition reimbursement cover that?

HR: Yes, that program would be covered under our reimbursement program.

and that what the OP understood was "it will be covered starting the day you start" but what the HR person should have clarified was that you had to be with the company X number of months before it started.

I'm guessing this since when she put in her request after being there 5 months, the boss said specifically no one at her "level" had ever been approved for that. Which indicates the course could be reimbursed but that she has to be there a certain period of time first.

Where the miscommunication took place is anyone's guess, but I bet that is what happened. I would be shocked if they reimburse tuition starting the day you start with them.

I would tell your current boss what is going on. If they want to keep you perhaps they will make that exception or at least give you a raise, especially since they said they reimbursed--were they lying on purpose, or just made a mistake? I would lean toward going back if Ms. Shingles isn't your problem.

I honestly believe it was an oversight on everyone's part--even though I specifically told them I was seeking an MBA education. You know the typical company spiel at the beginning--"We offer health insurance, paid vacation, tuition reimbursement..." Apparently this issue has never come up before.

Are you sure that by "not approving you at your level" they didn't simply mean that you have not been working there long enough to get that benefit yet? And maybe when you asked the HR person during the interview, they did not mean immediately and there was a misunderstanding.

I've honestly never heard of a workplace allowing a full on degree program to be reimbursed for a new employee until the employee had worked for the co. for a certain period of time.

The policy for other reimbursment is 6 months. I specifically asked if they would pay for it after I was there 6 months, and the answer was still no.

Nope--this is why I haven't been taking any classes for the last 6 months. I was waiting for the time requirement to be met.
