Again, I pose the point that no company I know of just lets brand new employees have the reimbursement benefit. There is usually a training/waiting period before you can start getting reimbursed for classes, and a slightly longer waiting period before you can be reimbursed for a full fledged degree program.
I could be waaaay off here, but I'm thinking during the interview the scene went something like :
OP: I'm interested in pursuing an MBA in ______ [insert subject] will the company tuition reimbursement cover that?
HR: Yes, that program would be covered under our reimbursement program.
and that what the OP understood was "it will be covered starting the day you start" but what the HR person should have clarified was that you had to be with the company X number of months before it started.
I'm guessing this since when she put in her request after being there 5 months, the boss said specifically no one at her "level" had ever been approved for that. Which indicates the course could be reimbursed but that she has to be there a certain period of time first.
Where the miscommunication took place is anyone's guess, but I bet that is what happened. I would be shocked if they reimburse tuition starting the day you start with them.
