I started a new job 5 months ago. When I interviewed, I specifically asked the HR person and my now boss if they had tuition reimbursement and if they would approve my courses for obtaining an MBA. I was told yes. Now that school is set to begin, they have declined my request stating that a person at my level has never been approved for this type of schooling and they are really sorry. The VP told me they are extremely happy with my job performance but he couldn’t make an exception. I took a $6k pay cut to come to this company, but I love my boss, like my team members, and I believe in the company’s purpose.

Now the dilemma. I called up one of the people I used to work with and she is hiring. I met with her today, told her I would want $10k more than I am making now and for them to pay my tuition starting with my November classes. She didn’t think this would be a problem. The other benefits are essentially the same.

I worked there for one year before leaving. During my one year tenure, I worked for one crazy lunatic who eventually caused me to get shingles. Then I moved under a really nice lady—who micromanaged and drove me crazy. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The lady who is hiring is great and her group is in the same large department I was working in. She told me she wants me to take over a leadership role in her team.

I need some unbiased opinions. Would you go back? :confused3

So, would you have to deal with the two high-maintenance people from before? Your boss is nice, right? Would you like the job? And it is a LOT more money, plus tuition? It sounds like an awesome move to me, unless you will have to work with/for those other two people. Were they all you didn't like about this place before? (They sound like quite enough, don't get me wrong!!! :) ) But if they are gone or not really in the picture, would that make the dept essentially a different place than last time?

I would have to interact with the one that gave me shingles occassionally. I specifically asked the gal I would be working for about that and she said that normally it ends up that she has to deal with this witch. The other one is fine--as long as she isn't my boss.

Would you be in any way subordinate to the shingle-causer?

Her title is higher, but she wouldn't have any direct authority over me.
 
If you know you have the new old job, you could go to your current boss and tell them the situation and see if they will keep you!

A lot of cost goes into the first year after hiring someone and it can be a pain to hire someone new and train them all over again!

Be sure to get everything in writing, especially about the witch!
 
Never give up doing what you love for the money.

If you do what you love, the money will follow. If an MBA is your ultimate goal and you can take the misery for another several years, then it would be the only reason I would go back.
 
I would tell your current boss what is going on. If they want to keep you perhaps they will make that exception or at least give you a raise, especially since they said they reimbursed--were they lying on purpose, or just made a mistake? I would lean toward going back if Ms. Shingles isn't your problem.

If the MBA is your goal, then you have to do whatever it takes to take care of you. I'd go to my new employer, explain whats happening, that you spoke to them about the tuition issue when you interviewed, tell them this is important to you but if they wont make an exception, you must go back to your old company. It used to look really bad to job hop, but these days it seems employers wonder whats up with people who stay in the same area for extended periods...like you must not be getting noticed and have gotten stuck in a corner. I was listening to some talk radio person go on about this the other week. Strange how staying with the same employer used to mean stability, now it means stagnation. Good luck with whatever you decide.

At my company, they have tuition reimbursement programs, however you have to work at the company for at least 18 months before you can get enrolled in a full out degree program. After 6 months, you can begin taking classes, but not be in a degree preogram. This is also how my SO's company handles tuition reimbursement.

Are you sure that by "not approving you at your level" they didn't simply mean that you have not been working there long enough to get that benefit yet? And maybe when you asked the HR person during the interview, they did not mean immediately and there was a misunderstanding.

I've honestly never heard of a workplace allowing a full on degree program to be reimbursed for a new employee until the employee had worked for the co. for a certain period of time.
 
They misled you to begin with. Go with the more $ and tuition.
 
Don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out.

I WOULD make sure that you have written into your offer letter from the other company the agreement that they will pay reimbursement for the class levels you are looking to take. It's nice for someone to tell you it shouldn't be a problem, another to find out you moved and it's the same.
 
What do you mean she "caused" you to get shingles? How did she do that?
My Dad had shingles and we were told he was not contagious to anyone who had previously had chicken pox. So did she expose you and you caught them from her or was she so crazy that the stress gave you shingles? If it was the stress, I'd think twice about going back.

Just a thought, but stress is major trigger for shingles. EVERYONE who has had chicken pox has the chance for shingles. It's just varying cases and where/how. Mine was on my arm and not all that painful. I've heard they can be debilitating though. Once you've had them it's easy to get them again and worse. I'm not looking forward to that. :(
 
I agree that you should go back to the old job, but do get the tuition reimbursement plan in writing.

The company you are with now might be nicer--but they also were misleading about the tuition. Why say they reimburse it if the reimbursement has strings attached to it? B/c they want you so they were selling the job to you. They just left out very important details.

I would take the money and run and get that degree.
