My daughter's 11th birthday party is Saturday. She wants her friends to decorate their own cookie cake. I thought, no problem!! Well, it's not as easy as I thought it was going to be.

I had a 6" circle (hollow) from my funnel cake kit that I was going to use to make the circle for the cookies. I did a test batch tonight and they all ran together. I would have needed to leave the ring on each cookie for it to keep the shape.

I need to make 20 or so of these things and I certainly don't have the patience to make one at a time. Can you suggest some other way to do this? The only other option I can think of is to make big rectangular cookies and just cut smaller cookies out of that. I really wanted them to be individual though :(

Any help would be appreciated!!

Dunno if this would work, but could you use something like aluminum foil to shape the cookies as they bake?

What kind of cookies are you making? If you're making sugar cookies, I think you'll have better luck with using a rolled refrigerated dough, like you would with Christmas cookies so they keep their shape. If you're making chocolate chip, there's a tip for "cake-like" cookies on this site Nestle Cookie Tips

Good luck!

Mmm cookie cakes sound yummy right now. Anyways maybe you could try using aluminum pie tins, the thin ones you get when buying an already prepared graham cracker crust. I think the dollar store might have packs of them or other supply type places, they should be pretty inexpensive IMO. You still won't be able to bake them all at once but making 4 at a time (2 on each oven rack) is easier than making 1 at a time.

Or you could also use a big rectangular pan to make a huge sheet of cookie cake, when cooled...flip a bowl over on top of it and cut around the bowl to make a circle. Depending on the size of the baking sheet you use and bowl, you could get 2-3 average sized circles out of it. Tell us what you decide and how it comes out. Great idea from your DD btw, tell her Happy B-Day from the dis'ers!!!

If you're making cookie dough from scratch try using a shortbread recipe. It doesn't spread like a sugar cookie does. If you're using a mix like Betty Crocker (it comes in a pouch) or a tube of dough like Pillsbury look on the package for the amount of flour to add to the mix for rolled/shaped cookies. Doing this really helps stop the spreading. Just make sure you have about an inch between each cookie.

thanks for all the tips!

I had trouble sleeping over those darn cookies

They are going to be chocolate chip ~ I bought the tubs from Sams. The idea of flour sounds like it would work but I really don't want to start adding to the premixed dough.

The cut out idea after the sheet is baked would be great if I didn't have so many to make. But with 20+ there would be alot of leftovers. And that would be bad for "Atkins".....:earseek:

The aluminum foil might work ~ I could make a square or rectangle "frame" with the foil. Hummm, possibility??

What I thought of at around 2 a.m. was the hoops that you use to cross-stitch. At least I think that is what they are used for. Whatever they are ~ I think they'll be inexpensive and should fare the oven ok.

I'm going to dig around the family fun website and see what I can find there. And then try to decide on the easiest and cheapest way to do this.

thanks so much and I will tell Bre the Dis'ers said happy B-day. I'll be back to tell you guys how it turns out :)

They would be the right size and inexpensive, but I'd be concerned about putting the plastic or wood ones in the oven. Which leaves one kind of plastic and metal one that is a tension-loaded one that might work.

Just put less cookies on each pan. Flatten slightly your big scoop of dough. Maybe 2 or 3 per cookie sheet. As long as there is enough space between the blobs of dough, they will make a circular shape.

Just spread the dough on cookie sheets with the lip (jelly-roll pan?), like you're making bar cookies. Instead of cutting them into small bars, cut it into quarters or sixths.

I make giant cookie cakes sometimes. When I make them for the kids to take to school, I use the foil, disposable pizza pans. You could see if you could find foil pans the right size and then pop them out to reuse them. Good luck.

How about disposable pie plates. Spread the dough out into the bottom of the plate, which is probably 5" or 6" in diameter, and you can put a few of them in the oven at the same time to bake.

hi again,
an update

I don't know why I don't research these things before I mention it to my children ??!!

Well, I read through all the suggestions but I figured I really didn't have enough time to experiment. The girls and I went to the Dollar Tree in hopes of finding 5 or 6 inch pie pans but no luck. The standard pie pan is 8 or 9 inches which is just too big. I didn't want to have to worry about the girls getting the cakes home.

So, on to Wal-Mart we went. Same story, the only aluminum pans they had were standard pie pans or loaf pans which were too big. We tried crafts for the cross-stitch hoops but there were only 2 and I wasn't real sure how they would hold up after a dozen uses.

My next step was automotive :earseek: I was going to see if they had some kind of clamp ring. I remembered seeing a metal ring that holds a hose and thought that might work. My DD's really thought I was off my rocker::yes:: I think the Wal-mart lady did too!

Thankfully, the Wal-mart lady stopped me and took me to the cake section where we found 6" cake tins. Granted, they were $5 a piece it was worth it to be done with this mission!

So, today I am making cookie cakes and waiting on the delivery of the 2 dozen pillowcases I ordered for the girls to decorate. Geez, next year she's having a swim party whether she likes it or not@@@!!!@@@ ha ha
