Please help me understand what a DL "at capacity" day looks like :)

Hello! We are planning our 5 day DL summer trip and due to schedules it looks like it will start around the 15th of June (likely) or possibly sometime in July. Since there is a chance we'll be there when SWGE opens can anyone explain how it works when the park is full? Can we park hop or will our spot be filled by someone else if we leave...leaving us unable to return? Are there lines of people waiting to get in once some leave and numbers go down? Does it tend to ease at any point during the day? I understand that nobody knows how to predict SWGE crowds but I'm just curious about the park in general during days when it hits capacity. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth it! Thank you so much!

When the park hits capacity, anyone who leaves risks not being able to get back in. No one gets guaranteed entry. In the past, closures due to capacity only last a short while and then they start letting people in as others leave.

It’s varied. When they hit capacity on the kickoff for the 60th they didn’t let anyone in from about 2/3pm till after the second running of PTN and that was after 2am. So on that day the entire area in front of Disneyland was ropped off so no one could wait there to enter and people were held outside of the old security perimeter. That was the only time I’ve ever seen that. Typically it’s a one for one situation at the gates when they reach capacity. That day was different since the streets were clogged with people waiting from 6am on for the the debut of PTN.

If you have an ADR do you have priority?
Not necessarily. Depends on what level it’s at. Disneyland doesn’t have as many steps to full closure as WDW does. First step is to stop selling one day park hoppers and one day one park to Disneyland tickets at the ticket windows. I think the second step is only those that have already entered the park and/or APs are admitted. And the full closures. Not sure if ADRs even get a category in there. I usually recommend following the Disneyland today twitter feed because they announce when there are gate closures and if parking is full etc.

If you have an ADR do you have priority?
No. With an exception of Club 33 guests, who will be escorted in, and when done, if park is still at capacity, escorted out.

There are technically 5 levels.
First, everything is wide open.
Next, they stop selling 1 day tickets. (If you have one, you can enter.)
Then they stop selling multiday tickets. (If you have one, you can enter.)
Then they stop all new entries, only those who have been in the park can reenter.
Finally, when the fire marshal calls enough, all entries cease, until enough people exit to allow some reentry.

On the kick off to the 60th, there were other issues involved. People were staked out along the street for PTN and the new fireworks show, and the fire marshal declared it unsafe to allow more people to enter down Main St due to this, even tho there was capacity in other areas.

It could. When the fire marshal says "Its full", there is no entry til he releases it to reopen.

Yes, people form lines and wait. And NORMALLY, the lines reopen shortly after the first parade. But all bets are off with SW:GE.

Capacity looks like bumper to bumper traffic on the 405 in the park...wall to wall people in many of the areas and typically long waits for popular rides and QS dining. On the outside are typically lines of people trying to get in. During the last 24 hour party, the line waiting to get in went back all the way to DLH. The good...err...okay news is that usually if DL is at capacity, you can still get into DCA.

With SWL, I think they may...if they're smart...have a separate line just to get into SWL at least for a while. Then maybe they can control the crowds to some degree. I read somewhere that they're expecting 200,000 on opening day. I think capacity is around 100,000. And about 20,000 of those people might not get on either one of the new rides. Overall, it's going to be nuts. But, if you don't care much about SWL, the rest of the park might be relatively normal.

I can give you my expirence from a Christmas break trip in 2017 on capacity closure days including a power outage during one of them...

There are different levels of closures that they follow. I think the first is not admiting new guests/ stop selling 1-day tickets. Then no re-entry. Then they get to where they only let those with dinning reservations in. Then it’s no one in. Or something like that.

On our first park day- the day the power went out. We still got tons of stuff done and had an amazing time. We used maxpass like a boss- started very early- about an hour before park opening, and had dinning reservations to avoid ohuge food lines. We did leave for an afternoon break and when we left the had the big area roped off between Disneyland and DCA and people were lined up there to get into Disneyland. We asked before we left if we would be able to get back in and luckily we had fantasmic blue bayou reservations so they said yes. We had no trouble showing our reservation (they also had a big binder) and getting back in the evening. I think by around 6-7pm they were readmiting Guests. More typically I think it’s earlier that they can open back up, but the power outage that day really impacted it.

Our next couple of days weren’t nearly as bad, but we decided not to take afternoon breaks. We ALWAYS arrived before park opening. We used maxpass every single time we were able to book another fastpass.

We did 3 chracter meals- which was worth every penny because lines for characters where enormous unless we got lucky or made a point to be at a meeting place before the chracter arrived. We also used dinning packages for shows. It was wall to wall people for shows so unless you have time to waste saving spots.. you can dine at Minnie’s before the park opens on magic morning day. During Christmas break they run Disneyland magic morning every single day. So we did this a day after we had already used magic morning. Got us in the park early, having breakfast, using maxpass. I’d be curious to see if they do this once Star Wars opens- magic morning everyday for awhile..

We didn’t have a parade package and managed to see the parade just fine by getting a snack and sitting about an hour before on Main Street.

Rides- this was the one area that once we went at a different time I really saw the difference and I want to take my kids back since the only expirence that have had is the Christmas break. If we didn’t have maxpass or we couldn’t catch it in the morning- it didn’t happen. Dumbo had over an hour wait, the dark rides had over and hour wait, etc. with Littles that just wasn’t happening. We caught little shows, snacked, and bounced between fastpass rides and watched the app for low wait times. We rode mermaid and Winnie the Pooh a few times lol. Even fastpass lines were 20-30minutes sometimes.

So was it worth it? Well it was our first ever time to Disneyland. We went again less than a year later and are planning our third trip for next spring. Sooooo... we deff fell in love with Disneyland during that trip regardless of crowds. And it’s funny because now I really don’t care about crowds during a trip because I know I can navigate them with a little planning. That being said, now that I’ve expirenced Disneyland during a different time, I would probably only go during that time again if it was absolutely the only time I could go because it is a less relaxing trip. We could go Christmas break again in 2019, but are choosing to wait until April 2020 instead.

If you go I’d shoot for July or as late and you can past the projected opening days of mid June. Then at least some of the bloggers, and dis fokes will have started posting information.

While having Priority Seating reservations (ADRs are the term at WDW) is not a guarantee for getting in when there is a gate closure, it can help if the closure is at a low level. But make sure to have your reservation printed out or the email on your phone and a clear copy of the reservation confirmation number! We've been in situations where we got through the gate just fine because we could show our email and confirmation number, but the people behind us got stuck at the gate. Either they were trying to fake having a PS reservation (yeah, right...CMs really are checking!) or they didn't know their confirmation number, had no email copy, and their name wasn't showing up in the binder. We've had our name not show up (spelling error), but the printed copy of the reservation confirmation saved the day.

When they do the final closure level, they will tell you that DIsney is not charging the no show fee.

I know someone who was very upset a few years ago because he had made reservations for dining on NYE night, and assumed that would get him thru the gate. (They were a party of 9.) He was VERY upset they wouldn't let his party in at 730pm for their reservation, as it was at a hard closure.

AT the 24 hour party for the 60th, we had PS for Cafe Orleans, and when we headed over, we were told it was a hard close, but Guest Relations did reroute us and get a reservation at Ariels.

Yes, they will not charge the penalty fee if you cannot get to your reservation because of a gate closure. If the fee shows up on your statement, just call Guest Services to explain and have it removed.
At one of the 24 hour parties (the second one?), a very nice plaid walked us over from DCA to DL to make sure that we would get past the gate for our BB reservation. That was pixie dust, so I would never count on that happening again. But it was super sweet of her to take care of us like that.

If you want to guarantee entry into both parks, book a VIP tour. All parties on tour are classified "In the park" for both parks at all times. We will do this on NYE.

How cool is that?! A VIP tour on NYE sounds amazing! Have you done it before? What’s it like? I would love to do it sometime if I can get enough of my friends and family to come along so that the price per person isn’t so steep.

We generally do one on NYE, just so we have easy access. If you book out far enough, you will also be able to reserve seating for fireworks. This past year, we spent the morning relaxing, then met up with our guide at 300p and hit up all the rides. You do need to book NYE way in advance, as it books up fast.
