Here is alittle background info: I used to be a 2nd grade teacher, before DS6 was born. After 2 years of teaching, I quit to become a SAHM. I let my license expire. This past year, we moved to a more expensive area of the state. So we need to have another income. I tried substitute teaching, but did not get called enough days to pay for my youngest in daycare. I decided to renew my teaching license, but have not had any luck finding a job.

I do not want to have to waitress at nights b/c I will miss seeing my sons on days he has school. I am looking for something that I can work at night--after they are in bed. That way, they won't even know I am gone!

Any ideas on where I can look???

Try getting a special education endorsement. In Florida, all you have to do is pass the test. I was interviewing all summer before I finally snagged my new teaching gig at the high school. The one thing I found they were looking for, was lots of different certifications.

I have ESE k-12, middle grades integrated curriculum 5-9 (can teach math, science, social studies, language arts) I am currently working on a reading endorsement which will enable me to teach intensive reading k-12.

Schools also like to hear that you are willing to do extra stuff like sponser a club, coach a team... ect. I am actually volunteering to help with registration next week because I said I would in my interview. I also said I would sponser a chess club or be a class sponsor.

i'd say keep looking. you could also take tutoring jobs (sylvan, kumon) in the meantime.
if it comes down to waitressing, it comes down to waitressing. sometimes you have to do what you gotta do! but it will be worth it when that job finally comes along.

Just a thought, but since you want to work at night, I used to work for an inventory service called RGIS (but there are others). We'd go into stores at night after closing and inventory their stock on the floor and in storerooms. I think I'd start around 9:30 - 10 and usually be done around midnight, but sometimes later. It was a weird job but I kinda liked it, as I'm somewhat obsessive compulsive, and counting things was really fun for me. You are with a team, so I never felt unsafe, and it was kind of cool being in those places after hours. It worked for me because I had young kids at the time, and was going to school during the day.

By the way, good luck in your job hunt!

Overnights as a Night Auditor at a local hotel. Those shifts are normally 11:30pm to 7:00am

Normally get a shift diff. pay increase also. Be sure to go to a nicer hotel chains and not some mom and pop where you will be alone. You want one that has someone else (security, etc) working with you.

Think of anything that runs 24 hours and what the night shift might be like. The RGIS thing that another person mentioned is a good idea. Also, night dispatch for a taxi company or customer service on an emergency maintenance hotline (to forward to plumbers, etc).

I also worked at RGIS while I was in college. It was a great PT job. Although -my hours were mostly weekends, not during the week.

I second the hotel night auditor suggestion. I did it for years and loved it. The major chains all have great employee discounts too!

Walmart - midnight shift-stock
UPS - warehouse/load trucks
USPS - mail sorter midnights
FED Ex - warehouse/load trucks locally
Hospitals - midnight shift/clerical
Urgent Care Center - receptionist, clerical
Emergency Vet - midnights, receptionist, clerical
Retirement home - midnights
Grocery Store - stock

My heart goes out to you! My position was eliminated and I had to scramble this year to find a new job. Luckily, I could relocate, as the position I found was 2 hours from where I was living.

Since you don't have that option, here are some thoughts:

1. Try tutoring businesses (Sylvan) in your area to see if they are hiring.
2. Consider doing online teaching. Do a Google search in your area. There were a lot of places around where I live who were looking for teachers to do this.
3. Look at private and parochial schools.
4. Is your state on REAP.net? If so, search for jobs there.
5. Google the Ohio Association of School Executives...the Colorado version of that group has an employment link.
4. Register at your local unemployment office. The ones here listed lots of Charter schools. Since Charter school jobs are less reliable and the pay varies so much, those positions tend to stay open longer than regular teaching jobs.
6. Google the U.S. Government jobs website. If you have any military installations nearby you might find teaching jobs listed there.

And, don't forget to keep checking your local districts daily. There are always last minute resignations. One time I got a job the third day of school!

Good luck!

Seems tutoring job would be the best option. How about work from home option in your area of expertise?

OP, I feel your pain. I'm from your area and cannot find a teaching job. I teach now in a Catholic school, but am trying to be proactive in finding a job in a public school because Catholic schools are consolidating in my area, and I'm the first to be cut. That being said, have you tried Catholic schools or private schools? It's not alot of money, but it's probably more than you can make waitressing and it would be better than subbing. Just a thought; good luck!
