I figure you experienced pro's would have some helpful insight for me. :)

I recently made a reservation for a Boardwalk 2 bedroom villa via travel agent. The cost came to $8469 including 9 day park hopper tickets. I'm not sure what just the villa cost. It's scheduled for May 2nd through May 10th.

I just read on a website that it would probably be less expensive to rent points from someone. It sounds very confusing, but if the cost is substantially less I would be willing to learn, lol. If I did decide to rent, what are the odds I'd be able to get the same 2 bedroom villa for the same dates? Actually I'd prefer Beach Club, but they didn't have any 2 bedrooms available when I went to book. Can anyone help me figure out if it would be in my best interest to rent points?

Thank you,
Jan

Well it would be 458 points (at about 10-12$ a point)for 9 nights at BWV. I am not sure what your chances are for that. We always stay studios(just 2 of us). I know that you would probably be able to get a studio for that time but like I said, not sure about 2 BR. Plus it might be hard to find someone how has 458 points to rent. You could get two owners points but then I dont know if they link them together so you don't have to move rooms. Maybe a oldtimer will come along and help out with that.

But yeah it will save some money but I don't know how much its worth it.

You didn't say how many MYW hopper tickets you were getting so we don't know how much of what you're spending is for tickets and how much is for the room.

The reason there wasn't any2-B/R villas available at BCV is because the inventory available for cash is different than the inventory available to owners using DVC points.

I'd say right now there are plenty of 2-B/R villas at BCV, available to members, for your timeframe.

As mentioned expect to pay about $10-$11/point. Normally the more points you get the cheaper someone is willing to sell them. (A lot less work to sell 400 points at $10 than to sell 400 points, 50 at a time, for $11)

Do you go to Disney often? If you will be going at least once every 3 years, you might want to consider ownership. If you purchased 160 points, banked current year points, combined with 2008 points, and borrowed 2009 points, you'd have 480 points available for your trip. If you rented 458 points at $11/point it would be over $5000 or roughly 1/3rd the cost of buying a 160 point membership. That $5000 would be for just one trip. Your membership would be good for up to 50 years worth of trips.

actually 9 nights would be only 458 points for preferred view or 422 for standard for a 2 BR

so 458 points would be about $5038-$5496 dollars($11-$12 per point)

dont know how many tix you need but standard 9 day hoppers are only $282 each for adults

so even with 5 adult tix you are only starting to push $6500-$7000 -so you are about 2k ahead of the game

thats quite a bit of cash

Two bedroom villas hold 8 adults so if you have figured in the tix for that number, add approx another $900 to the prices SJdisney figured for you.

Read up on Renting on the DIS before making a decision. Particularly review This Thread

Renting will require a great deal of trust between you and the person you rent from. Disney will not be involved, it is a private transaction. Tickets will be a separate transaction between you and Disney though.

I am sure you will receive much more valuable advice here. Good luck!

Keep in mind that when you're renting points, you're dealing with the individual DVC member, and not with Disney. There has to be some trust with the transaction. DVC Member Services will not deal directly with you, and will require the member you're renting the points from to make all the arrangements.

Wow, thank you everybody for your wisdom!! This trip is for my husband and I and our 5 kids. Two kids are under three so we are getting 5 park hopper tickets that include the water parks etc.

Caskbill, you particularly peeked my interest in the DVC ownership. After reading what you wrote, I looked a little into it. I didn't realize that if I bought this year I would have points to use this year and next, that's so cool! Plus they let you borrow from the following year?? Very interesting, and not as scary as trusting someone else. Hmmmm. I think I'll start looking more into this. And you think there are still plenty of rooms available for that time frame?

Thanks again everyone. Any input about ownership would be appreciated.

I think if I was putting that much cash out for vacation I would definitely look at buying DVC. Especially, with a large family. I have four children....they are now grown. We spent many vacations and many dollars at WDW. I wish I had known more about DVC years ago. I could have saved so much in the long run. Resale can get you a better price and maybe a loaded contract(one with banked points), but take longer than buying direct for Dis.
This board has a wealth of info. Don't be afraid to ask questions....you will find many folks that are more than willing to help!

:thumbsup2 I totally agree. After putting out 8500 in Feb we decided DVC was much more suited to our travel style even with the travel distance kept in mind! Some people have been outstanding at answering questions, giving suggestions and letting you know when you might accidentally climb the stupid tree so I don't make the wrong decision!:lmao:

Jan, I agree, purchasing the DVC would be the way to go, especially for this kind of $$, also, if you figure in the current "free vacation" promotion and credit, that is an even sweeter deal!

Let me know if I can help!

:scared1: OMG! You really need to look into buying! I take it that price doesn't include airfare either does it?! The current Friends & Family sales promotion would be just the ticket you need right now! At $8,500 you would recover your investment quickly!

I think just the cost of your stay used as a down payment will get you a very nice DVC membership. If you leave it the way it is, I'm sure you will have a great trip, but you have nothing left when you get home but memories. Buying before leaves you something to have for your next trip and with the amount you are paying for your trips now, it will recover the cost fairly quickly.
good luck,
Roger

What is the "free vacation" promotion and credit" and the "current Friends & Family sales promotion" you all are talking about?

Hey, I would like to know what these promotions are also? All I currently know is if you buy 225 point AKL you get $8 a point off and 160 developer points. Are there other specials running? thanks

I feel a convert coming on board :rotfl2: Seriously Jan, best of luck in whatever you choose. We are fairly new to DVC and love it. I love the feeling of having a vacation in my pocket for years to come. DVC is super flexible and the points can also be traded to Interval International rentals all over the world (small w ;) ). It generally takes some flexibility but a reason DH and I bought is we may not want to go to Disney for the rest of our lives (OK - so maybe he won't.....) and we like the availability of other options. If you call the number on the DVC website a Guide will walk you through all the ins and outs. There seems to be a plethora of incentives running now so a Guide is really your best bet. :grouphug:

2Tink4u,

Hey, there is also the Disney Visa promotion, if you pay your down payment on the Disney Visa you get a $500 gift card.

But, you have to have a referring current DVC member in order to take advantage of the promotion.

Feel free to use my name if you need to: Brittney Smith, pell City, AL.

This is such a great deal, i think we are going to buy another contracT!!!

covereddish,
I tried sending you a PM but my count is tooooo low so just what is the "referral promotion" you and Rogerram are talking about.

Mopee

Buy 110 and get 100 Developer Points...
Buy 160 and get 160 Developer Points...
Buy 200 and get 270 Developer Points...

And of course you get the $500 Disney Dollars if you buy a minimum of 160 points and charge the downpayment to you Disney Visa.

And if you buy at SSR you get $10 off per point or $8 off per point at AKL

Thank you so much everyone for all your reply's! I'm sorry it took me so long to get back, but I find it really hard to find the time to type back. I can usually check the messages, but most of the time that I can get on the computer, I usually have my three month old in my lap making the act of typing very difficult.

My interest is peeked, and it seems to make more economical sense to buy into the DVC. We've never been to WDW, but I know we'll love it, and I have no doubt we'll want to go back, then there's the fact that we could go other places as well with the points.

I actually have set up an appointment at the Disneyland resort for next Monday to take a tour and talk to someone in person. I feel with everyones help that I will be able to go in there and actually understand and know what she is talking about. I hate going to those things and leaving and realizing that I have a zillion other questions. I feel very prepared now, thank you. Please keep your fingers crossed for me that my husband see's the light. :)

Jan
