Please help...baking idiot here

Recipe calls for one cup butter. Is that a stick? or two? A stick is four oz.'s, and I know a cup is 8, ....but are liquid and solid measurements the same?

Am I safe to assume that one stick is half a cup (ok with me as I'm cutting the recipe in half)

one stick of butter is 1/2 cup

You are correct. The lines you see on the stick of butter are tablespoons. 16 in a cup and 8 in a half cup.
