Please explain the finger scanner

On my last trip (Feb 11-16, 2006) was my first experience with the new finger scan park entry system. You have to insert your ticket in the machine and stick your fingers in another contraption. What does this do, does it read your fingerprint? What is the purpose of this? I don't mind it, I'd just like to know the reasoning behind it. I also think they should hand everyone an antibacterial wipe afterwards, it's a good thing I carry some with me.

It doesn't read your fingerprints, but instead measures the ratio of the length of your finger bones (one joint to the next). It's fairly specific to you (not completely unique though) and the info is registered as being connected with your ticket. This way Disney can ensure that the person using the ticket is the same person who first used it. Does that make sense? And I don't think they need to provide wipes. I mean, they don't give you anything antibacterial other than bathroom soaps after you touch anything else in the park (ride vehicles, railings, etc).

They are trying to avoid people giving there tickets to friends when they aren't using them. Hypotheatically 2 families of 4 can go for 7 days and go to the parks every other day. One family uses the passes one day while the other family stays at the resort. The next day they switch. You would only need 4 tickets. The finger scan identifies your ticket to your person. Finger bone structure is just as unique as a fingerprint therefore no need to ask for ids. You buy your ticket and once you set you finger in there the first time it records it and then those fingers are associated with that pass forever or until it expires.

Basically the biometric reader scans your fingers (not your fingerprints),and stores the information associated with the bar coding on your pass, each use after the initial use, the system compares the current biometric reading with what is stored against your pass.
