Yes, this is about those blasted refillable mugs. But this is not what you think!

I just read something in my passporter that I thought was quite interesting. (I was amazed to learn something new, because I truly thought I'd memorized the whole book already :goodvibes ) It mentioned the refillable mugs at Typhoon Lagoon have a bar code on them, and that on later visits, a new bar code can be purchased for $5. I'm wondering why the resorts don't do this? It could certainly keep things friendlier here on the DIS :rotfl2: Forgive me if this is old news and has already been discussed.

Sounds like it might be too difficult to regulate... presumably you don't refill your own drink in TL whereas at the resorts you do, so adding a barcode might not make any difference, unless the machines don't dispense drinks until a barcode is scanned!!?? D'oh i'm confused as usual LOL.

You can refill your own mug at the water parks. I think it is because you are talking about more people at the resort.

Guess the resorts would have a hard time deciding when you would need to get a new sticker. Would it be every day, etc.????

I read a couple of months ago that the replacment barcode stickers could be purchased much cheaper than purchasing a new mug so I am taking the mugs I purchased in June '04 on our upcoming trip in June and I am purchasing the new stickers. I have one from both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach. Yes, you do refill your own mugs at the Water Parks which I love!!! The machine will not dispense soda unless a barcode is scanned.

This is a great way to regulate. I guess it would be a little harder at the resorts because presumably it would be for length of stay, not just one day. But I am positive it can be done (programming-wise). They could just put an expiration date associated with the bar code - expiring the last day of your resort stay. It just seems like a great idea to me. But if this is already in place the water parks but not at the resorts, perhaps Disney isn't as concerned about it as many other people seem to be? :confused3

thanks so much I had not heard about this. I will definitely be packing my mug from last year!!! :disrocks:

Just curious does anyone know how much the mugs cost??

$11.99 now for the resort refillable mugs. I am assuming it's the same for the water parks.

$9.99 plus Tax at Water Parks... found it on allearsnet....

But at a resort, not everyone who buys a drink there uses a refillable mug. Some guests purchase a drink with each meal. If the barcode was to work, then the people buying individual drinks would have to get their drinks at a seperate, monitored station. Might be more expensive to Disney to do that.

10.00 for a water park mug with unlimited refills. $5.00 when you purchase a sticker on return visits.

I'd hate to see the resorts use the bar codes. I had all kinds of trouble trying to get the machine to work with my bar code at BB.

The drink machines are so busy at the resorts and the line would be so long if only one drink could be dispensed at a time. For instance if I were to fill a coke and a spite, instead of doing them both at the same time, I would have to wait and do one at a time. Then you have people who fill 4 or 5 at a time. It could take forever.

We bring our own mugs and buy the sticker at the Water Park. You can purchase the sticker at the counter service restaurants that have the bar code soda machines. However, I do have to add that I've seen some really crazy things. More than once I've seen someone scan their mug and out of no where comes a crazy preteen/teen who quickly runs and shoves his head under the machine and pushes a drink button. The scanner is on a timer and within the allowed time you can push any of the soda buttons. My son makes himself a mixture of all the sodas...yuck.

Another warning about the mugs. The stickers stick to those mugs really good. It's hard to remove them. The barcode is a different story. It's paper and when wet it seems to disintegrate. This might be why it's not at the resorts.

thanks for this thread as it just saved me some money I have BB mugs from our last trip and would have never thought to bring it cause I thought you had to buy a new one! They now will be put in our suitcases thanks again for telling everyone you can purchase a new bar code cheaper!

I had NO idea about this!?! :confused3 We have SEVERAL mugs from BOTH of these water parks (as well as the old closed park). We have PAP's and the water parks are included, so we always visit a few times each summer.

Now, I'll place one aside from each to pack for our upcoming visit. Thanks for the tip...I'll use the extra $$$ to buy a couple bags of those piping hot & fresh SINFULLY delicious CINNAMON DOUGHNUT things!!!! :cloud9: Thankfully, I can only find them on Pier 39 out here in Cali...they are so good, they should be regulated!! LOL... :rotfl: :rotfl2:

Thanks again!! :wizard:
