Please don't do this while shopping...inspired by shopping pet peeves

OMG...they did??? That's who I work for (BRU)!! I had no idea they actually called people!! At our store, a little survey thing pops out every now and then ~ the customer can choose to call and participate in the survey for a $3.00 coupon.

:rotfl2: So maybe the cashier really didn't know they called people! She seemed really sincere. This was several years ago, though, probably around 2000?

I normally don't mind surveys, but not at 8 a.m., LOL!

My guess was going to be Kohl's, too. And yay, I inspired this thread! :teeth:

I agree with everything that you've stated and it's not all just for the sales person's benefit, but the other shoppers, too.

We have an unlisted number so I usually give them our old phone number. sorry to whoever has it now

The people that had our number before we did still use this number for things and they have TERRIBLE credit based on all the collection calls we get for them and we have had this number for 7 years! It is illegal you know, just don't get caught.

when someone has an unlisted # or doesn't want to give it out, I usually put in 999-999-9999. The company tracks your "phone compliance" and will show your "score". It is supposed to be something like 85% or higher. So just to keep it around that 85% I will sometimes put in my own # or another # that I make up. It's ridiculous....I mean why is it my fault that some customers don't want to give out their number? I certainly shouldn't be held accountable for that. I ask everyone. Whether or not they give it to me is irrelevant.

I know what I'll do next time...I'll give the store the phone number of my next door jerk, I mean neighbor! Why hadn't I ever thought of that before? :rotfl:

Do you happen to work at Kohl's? :)
That is sooo funny. I read the post and wondered if she worked at Kohls. I do. I have been there 13 years in customer service. Every comment she made is correct. People are messy, rude, and very inconsiderate. You do have your good ones but more of the others. The dressing rooms are always a mess. People are very demanding. They return more than half of what they buy. Retail is a very hard job with low pay and lower rewards. The only real benefit is it works for working moms. Also all the complaints about phones numbers and promoting credit cards is part of the job. I find it very funny when people have a problem giving a phone number out. Who cares?? They don't call. Make a number up. Why waste time making a big deal over nothing. That is the problem. People have to make issues over nothing. People should work in a retail job to get an idea what the public is like. I will let you know what they pay us is not enough!

I don't want to give my number out and won't do so. I am polite, though, when I tell the cashier that I don't give it out. I figure that it's not their choice to ask, afterall.

The worst customer return story happened at a Kohl's. I was returning something and a lady was next to me returning a LARGE stack of clothes. She handed the returns person a whole large handful of receipts from the past couple of years, expecting the employee to go through the receipts and match up the items to the correct receipt. The employee was very nice, but told the lady that she had to go through the receipts. Good for her!

I have no problem with any of that. I actually do it.
I ask in return of salespeople that they refrain from chatting with their co-workers over a rounder which does not but block customers from accessing it and buying something because of it. Oh and please finish helping me before you drop everything to answer the phone, or at least ask if it's ok or apologize for needing to do it.

and please don't give me the eyeroll if I ask if you have my size in the back. I know you want to catch up with your co-workers about what happened on Dr Phil but it can wait a couple minutes, can't it?

Almost all the stores Ive been to have said. "Excuse me one moment" -picked up the phone, put them on hold and countinuted helping me-

Of course I have been given the cold shoulder but usally everyone is helpful and nice. (I LOVE NORDSTROM) :goodvibes

I almost always give my phone number, as I have never gotten a call. But I dont know our safeway card phone number so use my grandmas. .Ofcourse she is getting points for free food.. :teeth:

don't even have a card from the store I work at :rotfl:

The only reason I got one when I worked at Kohl's was because the only way to get the associate discount is to either pay by cash/check or to use your credit account. No non-store cards were allowed to be used in a associate discounted transaction.

we have to ask for phone numbers at the store I work for ~ I hate it, but I need to (again ~ you never know when a secret shopper is in your line) Most people give it out, some act offended and are rude and some make up numbers. How do I know they make up numbers? One woman was shopping with the young preschool aged son. After she gave me her number, he said "Mom ~ that's not our number. Our number is 555-123-4567" :rotfl:
She turn 10 different shades of red and I wanted to laugh, but tried not to show it!
Ahhh, from the mouths of Babes! :rotfl: No need to lie. I nicely tell the cashier: "Sorry, but my # is private. But thank you anyway". I realize they're just doing their jobs.

I'm also sick and tired of being asked about opening new credit accounts.

Victoria's Secrets has gotten terrible about it. NO I DON'T WANT YOUR STUPID CARD! I know they are just doing their job, but it's gotten to the point where I need help finding something, and the sales people are spending all their time harrassing people to open and account and not helping them make selections! Last Saturday after the third girl approached me about the card in under ten minutes, I literally dropped the three items I was carrying and intended to buy on the ground in front of me and walked out. What I needed wasn't a credit card, but help finding a bra in the size and color I wanted. So they not only didn't get me to get the card, they lost what would have been about a $250 sale. Not sure I'll be back. And yes, I sent an e-mail to their corporate headquarters about it.

I have never abandoned a purchase like that before, but I had just had it. The girls weren't just asking me to sign up for the card, they were badgering me when I declined.

Anne

BTW--Nordstroms and Brooks Brothers never even ask you to apply for their cards. Bloomingdales you'll sometimes get asked, but when you say no that's the end of it.

that's all people need to say to me....no need to be rude!

We don't have a credit card to try to sell to people, but we do have to try and sell the Buyer Protection Program (like an extended warranty). I have to ask everyone that purchases and eligible item, and if they say no, then I move on. I think the management expects me to go on and on about the benefits of the program to convince the customer to get it, but I'm just not going to. If they tell me no, then that's the end of it. I don't like to be badgered when I'm shopping, so I'm not going to do that to my customers.

This thread has been an eye opener. I get tired of being asked for my phone number and to open CC accounts but I can see how much pressure is put on the sales associates. At Target, I sometimes get approached while I'm shopping and that is SO annoying.

These silly stores need to quit bugging people IMO. It only makes me more determined to never get their charge cards. ;)

I also work p/t for a large retailer. Besides the mess some people leave in fitting rooms ( pants inside out and thrown on the floor, garbage, you name it-I've found it  ) ,it really bothers me when people get upset when their credit card says " ask for id " in the signature space and I ask to see their id- if you don't want to show an id when you use your credit card, then don't write that on the back of your card

When DD12 was much younger, if we were stuck behind someone with way more than 12 items in the express lane, I would always have her practice her counting out loud as the person was putting their items on the belt! It was always fun to watch the anger on the faces of the offending person trying to run 25-30 items through the express lane, and if they ever said anything to me, I would immediately ask them why they were opposed to education. That quieted them up in a hurry!

On one occasion, a woman in front of us had 27 items. DD (then about 5) asked out loud why she was in the express lane when she clearly shouldn't be there. I told me daughter (in an equally loud voice) that I didn't know, but it would be rude to ask the person directly why! The offending shopper paid for her purchases with an angry glare in a huff, and once she left my daughter was thanked by both the cashier and the bagger for making their day!

Not quite a dept. store story, but this thread jogged my memory....
