Please do NOT go to Disney World if you (or your children) are sick

If my kids have the flu it typically passes in a couple days and I will be back at the Dis. As long as they are not throwing up. Sorry but I am not canceling a vacation because my kids "might" give it to someone else. All three are in school so our family is usually got some sort of illness from now until they get out next year.

The media freaks everyone out about getting sick and suddenly i have to lock myself up. Give me a break. Thousands die every year from the regular Flu. Stop being paranoid

There is a new item at the Disney gift shops this year for all you paranoid people. It is the Disney Bubble. Now you and your family can walk around in a fashionable plastic bubble all day without the worry of someone even breathing on you. On sale now.

Sorry but I agree. My kids (especially my daughter ) always have something she is bringing home from school whether it be the sniffles, cold, cough, earache..something. If I kept her home everytime she had something she'd never go to school or anywhere else for that matter.

Plus alot of people are contageous before the visible symptoms ever arise thats why it spreads so fast.

Yes, I worry we are going to get sick. We leave in a few short weeks. I am very vigilant on handwashing and hope none of us catch anything.

DIS never ceases to amaze me, people will nick pick anything.

Now come on... you know that she was talking about the truly sick, not someone with an earache.

We had h1n1, and my daughter ran a fever of 104 for 5 days straight. This is a girl who never gets more than the sniffles once a year. She got rotavirus for the first time ever just last year, and she's six, and has been in school since she was 2. She is very healthy, but this flu tends to give kids a high fever and make them feel like crap overall. I've never seen her take to the couch when sick, but she hardly got off of it the entire week she had n1h1. was it awful? no. but the worst i've ever seen her.

So if your daughter had a slight cough and a 100.3 fever the night before your week-long Disney trip, would you cancel it? I highly doubt it, and it seems like that is what the OP is asking. It is ludicrous to make a blanket statement that "IF YOUR KID IS SICK, CANCEL YOUR TRIP!!!!" First, define sick. Second, promise to reimburse me for all costs related to CANCELING MY TRIP!!!! Maybe then, I'll consider canceling my trip to make sure you don't get the sniffles. Then again, I probably won't. Sorry.

Of course, using the example above, if my son had a 104 fever and was in bed for days, then I would do something about my trip. But "sick" can mean alot of things and you should be more specific when coming on the board to whine.

Well, no, I didn't. You see lots of folks taking rather unusual positions on the Dis from time to time, and her intention wasn't clear from her post.

If she meant H1N1 or something like that, maybe she should go back and change the title of her post.

I guess I made the assumption that the woman was talking about the flu, but I'll let her come back and make corrections to that.

I'm not the OP, but all of my arguments are made in regards with someone having the flu or major contagious illness.

My DD spiked a fever en route to WDW this past trip. I guess we should have just turned around and gone home?

There are just too many variables involved to make such a blanket statement about being sick and canceling your trip. Lest we also forget that, in the case of H1N1, you can be contagious for 1-2 days before you even show symptoms!

Around here a "croupy" sounding cough is lasting a MONTH. You aren't contagious for a month. If there is no fever, just like at school, I say go.

I agree, they are saying you are not contagious after the fever is gone for 24 hours. The cough lasts forever but the fever is the kicker. These are the guidelines our school sent out. If the kids are healthy enough for school they are healthy enough for Disney.

If im on my death bed, ill consider canceling; but for now... here I come WDW!

I agree with this. My point is that parents are the only ones who really know if their kid is sick or not, but there have been several parents who have admitted, in just the last few weeks, to dragging their kids out while they were very sick. I think most folks can understand the difference, right?

Would I take my family to disney KNOWING that we had something that was contagious? NO, I would reschedule the trip.

Would I cut my trip short if we came down with something while there? It would depend on what the illness was and if we were traveling by plane or car.

Would I take my family to disney knowing that others go their sick? YES. You cannot live your life in a bubble. Think about it, you grab your mail and start opening it. Does your mailcarrier feel well today?

Everyone close your eyes.
Take a deep breath, tilting your head up
Imagine turning that corner and there in front of you is the castle
Exhale
Feel better?

i'm with the people who are going unless i'm on my death bed. have a december trip planned and hope not to be sick but time will tell. with that said around here the dr's don't even consider a child having a fever unless it's over 103. they don't even want to see them. i also agree that the media is blowing this way out and scaring way to many people. for those who are completly scared of getting this flu and have a trip planned you could always buy masks and wear them around disney so you don't get sick! :confused3

I totally agree with this. I'm not canceling our trip unless someone is really sick, and I'm definitely not canceling because I'm afraid of others being sick. I'm going to take all the precautions that I can. My DD and I have both had h1n1, so we're hoping we're immune to that for awhile, and we both just got our seasonal flu shot, so we're hoping that we're immune to that for awhile. My husband is getting his this week, and I'm not sure if he's ever had any type of flu. So he's pretty lucky. I will bring my hand sanitizer and wipes, and hope for the best. :)

My point is that people should care about other people's well-being, and do the right thing. People know when they're doing something that isn't right.

totally agree 100%

If I may, just to put some perspective on the topic.
We were at Disney World Oct 3rd thru 10th.
Our 3 children are quite prone to illness, especially of the viral kind.

Although I am not a germ-a-phobe, we did use strict precautionary measures (thorough hand washing, hand sanitizer pre-meals, during flights, and applied randomly after attractions).

Right now, southwest Michigan is getting hit hard by the H1N1. Out of 400 students, their school had to close this past Friday because 113 were out with the illness.
Guess what? My family is NOT one of them. We are healthy as can be (knocking on wood, of course).

Besides, being exposed is not always a bad thing. As long as this particular strain doesn't mutate, those exposed this year should have built it's antibody recognition for the years to come.

Be vigilante, but my goodness, don't live in a bubble!

(PS, we average a WDW trip about once every 3 years. And although we have no intention of planning and visiting anytime soon, I still enjoy coming here and lurking, especially observing the frequent controversial hot topics.
It's almost as exiting as the political blogs!)

I agree 100%. Didn't 100 children die of H1N1 last week? I'm not in a panic about this but it's not like this is a simple cold. Exposing others to the swine flu is so dangerous. As PP have said, this is what trip insurance is for.

umm NO.
hearing facts wrong.
100 total so far. total. and you have no idea of their health conditions before they got the flu.
the "swine flu" is no more dangerous than any other it just has the media's hype to spread paranoia.

And for the record according to the CDC, 36,000 people die of the flue each YEAR.

Actually, although this strain appears to be milder than the regular fllu, a higher percentage of healthy children and adults have died as compared to the regular flu, which is why they are more concerned.

Sad thing is that the world seems to be raising a generation of "you owe me, it's my right" people.

What happened to saving for things, working hard, family first, basic manners?

If I had to work 2 part time jobs flipping hamburgers and scrubbing floors to put a roof over my families head and food on the table, I would do it until the next better job came along.
People today think it is beneath them to do jobs like this, but yet the same ones sit there and complain about not having any money and losing thier homes.

Respectfully snipped.

But you could also apply your example to this thread. If someone worked that hard to save and save for their WDW trip, and finally got the time off (considering how hard it is for part timers to get vacation time), would it be fair for all of us to say, "Oh no, your child is coughing, sneezing, and they have H1N1 in their school, maybe you should cancel your trip."

This could be their only opportunity for a once in a lifetime trip. We just don't know EVERYONE's situation.

Just to remind everyone of the rules here on the DIS:

4. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction

I've deleted several posts from this thread for violating this rule. Further violations may result in infractions.
