my ds8 ASD has discovered pbandj sandwiches!!
yes, the fault is mine, he has a limited diet like many ASD kids, and in preperation for our up coming trip, i got his little sister to try one, she loved it! josh then wanted one, to cut a long story short, it pb and j on toast in lunchboxes, the lot:goodvibes
so, my question.
We are on the ddp, but josh is a grazer, he snacks, normally quite healthy all day, can you buy pre made sandwiches in walmart and target? we had some in BB 2 years ago, snuckers? can you buy those packaged, and how long do they last, or do i have to buy them fresh everyday?
i will take boxes of cereals for him and i am thinking of getting garden grocer to deliver some stuff (water beer etc) to POR for us, but i need to know what to order and how many.
any info would be great, thank you for england, where, for once, the sun is shining!!:cool1:

Yup, you can buy those Smucker's pre-made PBJs at Wal-Mart or other supermarkets. I believe they're frozen. I'm not sure how long they last but I generally think of PBJ as non-perishable except to the extent that the bread gets soggy. If you can keep them frozen of course you're all set.

You know, PBJ sandwiches just like those Smucker's ones are available at almost every CS restaurant at Disney. They cost the earth, of course, but if you're already on the DDP, I thought you'd want to know.

Have fun!

thats fab, thanks, the trouble with ds is when he wants to eat, he will not wait, and to avoid melt down bag of snacks is v helpful.
so if i can throw a couple of those in my bag, at least he will have something "sensible" to eat which is not full of salt or sugar.
thanks for the tip about cs, we have been over menus, trying to find balanced (well as balanced as it gets at disney;) ) opefully will not have to fall back on pb too much.
but at least we have a new food... which is a novelty, even though he is not as limited as the kids on another thread, he is difficult. He loves tortilla wraps, do they go with pb and j???:rotfl2:

I know if he's ASD, he may not be willing to eat PBJ other than a sandwich, but here's another thought. I just stumbled across Jif little cups of peanut butter, about 3 oz. Our daughter likes to dip crackers in hers and eat that. They sell the little cups in packs of 6. I think they'd be more portable than the Smuckers, and you wouldn't have to worry about them getting squished.

I know they have the Smucker's Uncrustables at some of the food courts and also at the counter service in Norway at Epcot. Our son loves those!

You can buy a box of 4 at Super Target for about $3 - they come with grape or strawberry jelly. They also come in grilled cheese, but we haven't tried those. My son sometimes takes them in his lunchbox - we put it from the freezer straight into his lunch and it thaws by the time he eats at school. I agree that it is probably pretty stable at whatever temperature you have, but they do tend to get mashed.

Good luck! :)

We have garden Grocer deliver a jar of PB and One of Jelly with a loaf of bread to our room. I bring baggies and we make DS 2 pb and J sandwiches to take to the parks each day. I put them in the fridge and take them out before we go or I freeze two slices of bread nad make the sandwich on the frozen slices. They stay nice and cool until DS is ready to eat them. Garden Grocer is GREAT. We order oatmeal packets (Hot water from coffeemaker) water, granola bars, juice boxes, bread, pj , jelly, diapers, cereal boxes, apple sauce cups, etc. DS will sometimes eat in restaurants but not often. He likes calm, quiet. We take lots of snacks with us to the parks. The Smuckers sandwiches were $$ so we decided to just have the food delivered and we make them ourselves. I am pretty sure if you are at POR you have a fridge. We have stayed there in the past but I can't remember if the fridge is standard or if we had one due to DS meds????

PBJ goes well on tortilla's and keeps very well. The smuckers crustless PBJ's last pretty well in a back pack all day. (They even last for hours sitting out) Personally I make DS PBJ for lunch, but at the middle school I work at they sell these, not my thing but it makes them happy. It's nice to hear that your kids enjoy PBJ too!:)

All the hotel gift shops have a grocery area, I have seen peanut butter, jelly and bread for sale. I would just buy the fixings there.

Bring sandwhich-sized tupperware containers to keep the sandwhiches from getting mashed up in your bag. The backpack I got at Wal-Mart actually came with a tupperware container (with plasticware built into the lid, even) and a sport drink bottle, which store in their own little places on the backpack (a front pouch for the tupperware and a side mesh pocket for the bottle). I didn't use them at Disney (I can always eat French fries for lunch if need be - and I just bought bottled water, since that's what I normally drink), but they would come in handy had I wanted or needed to.

thanks you are the best:goodvibes
the other question is, can you buy weetabix cereals in the us? thats his other "obsession", quite a healthy one, so we encourage that;)

Yes, but I don't know where you can get it near WDW. I have seen it in the supermarket here (not much help, I know).

my DD lives on peanut butter (NO jelly - making the smuckers uncrustables a no go) and I often travel with a jar of peanut butter, or carry the Jif mini-tubs. Tortilla wraps are a special treat for her, I warm up the tortilla so it rolls more easily.

dont know about ds might try this myself:rotfl2:
thanks guys

but i ask again, can you get weetabix nr disney, or do i bring it from the uk.

Tracy

I'd bring it.

It's going to be hit or miss, finding any. So I'd pack some.

(hey at least it's cereal and not too heavy!) ;)

and it will leave room for all those souvenirs:rotfl:

I googled Wheetabix and found a USA website, did a search with the WDW zipcode (32830) and it looks like Publix grocery stores carries these, probably in the organic/health food section, and several natural food stores.

http://www.weetabixusa.com/wheretobuy.php

I think they are made in the USA so might be different than what you can get in the UK. I might be tempted to bring some from home, and buy a box in Orlando to compare, for future reference.

The Smuckers PB&J are found in the frozen aisle..I think the idea is you take it out of the freezer and put it in your lunch box and it will thaw by lunch time.
If you just had bread, Peanut butter and jelly it would take a few seconds to make a sandwich. Only the Jelly really needs to be refrigerated.

I put peanut butter in the refrigerator after opening. I do not know if it was spoiled or not but did recently get sick. Peanut butter has oils which can spoil. I prefer it cold also. Skippy Natural is the best gluten free that I can find in peanut butters, has palm oil though.

According to medicinenet, peanut butter can be stored 2-3 months in the pantry after being opened, and will last longer in the refrigerator.

Someone mentioned Smucker's Uncrustables as an alternative to sweet/salty snacks - they do have 260 mg of sodium, 10 g of sugar, (and 9 g of fat, plus a whopping 6% of your daily iron and 2% of your daily calcium needs). So don't be surprised in your child still gets a sugar rush after eating an uncrustable or two.
