No one should assume motorists will yield to pedestrians in a cross-walk when the traffic light is green. Operationally, motorists will typically do so in terms of delaying their right turn-on-red, and perhaps delaying when they start off the stop-line once the red light turns green. Once traffic is moving, pedestrians should stay on the sidewalk.

We always wondered how old people managed to cross some of these roads.

When we walk from DTD to Crossroads there is a road that gives you an amount of seconds to cross the road. It appears that only fast ablebodied people can do this!!! You will need to run to just make it before the light turn green again. I guess slower people will remain slow as they will have to take a cab and never get the exercise they need!!!!!

Florida is the number one state in the United States for pedestrian fatalities and injuries. The same goes for bicyclists. On an average day, 5 pedestrians are seriously injured. In an average week, about ten pedestrians are killed. Pedestrians in many cases do have the right of way and many are dead right. Transportation Engineers that have studied the cases are somewhat baffled by the reasons. A lot like to blame the tourists and others say it is because of the weather allowing more use. The solution has to be a partnership between engineering, enforcement and education. In California if a pedestrian steps off the curb he "owns" the road and enforcement writes up the drivers for failure to yield. I haven't seen that kind of enforcement here in Florida.
A majority of the crossing fatalities take place in the second half of the crossing making 6 lane arterial roadways very dangerous for pedestrians. Crosswalks and traffic signals do not stop cars! The walk signal does not mean that it is safe to cross. It only means that it your turn to cross but be careful of those that think they can cut in line. As a driver you must yield to pedestrians! IT IS THE LAW!

And in Florida, the law actually works both ways: Pedestrians are required to yield the right-of-way to vehicles approaching a crosswalk. Only when the way is clear are pedestrians to cross at a crosswalk.

Very sad indeed. We all seem to drop our safety standards whilst abroad and I did notice the road rules for crossing were different to over here. Its a pity and a tragic loss. My thoughts are with the family.
