Plaza or Shelburne

We have some points to use up by Dec 1 and thought about a night in NYC for our Anniversary. Has anyone stayed at either or both? How do they compare?

The Plaza is a NY Landmark hotel. Staying there is an "experience" in itself....one of the most famous hotels in the world. It is located right on 5th Avenue by Central Park and is ideal for seeing Manhattan. The rooms themselves can vary from "smallish" to grand. DVC members seem to generally get pretty good rooms at the hotel. I'm waiting to hear how DVCReg makes out. In general, NYC hotels tend to have smallish size rooms.

The Shelburne is part of a NYC chain of "suite" hotels in older buildings. I have not actually stayed at any of the hotels, including the Shelburne, but I am familiar with them. They have a reputation as being perfectly fine for a stay in NYC.

The Shelburne = Hotel in NYC. The Plaza = World Famous Hotel located in NYC.

I have stayed at the Shelburne several times and two of the others hotels in the 'Manhattan Suites East' collection. It is almost like staying in a small NYC apartment. The rooms are very clean, the staff is great and they have a wonderful gym. They also have a restaurant, but I haven't gone yet. I have stayed in a studio and a one bedroom (small kitchen, living room and bedroom.) It is also located in a great neighborhood. Close walking distance to Grand Central Station for the Subway. Staying at the Shelburne will not disappoint you, especially if you are out and about enjoying NYC.

However, PAMOKW is absolutely right -- The Plaza is THE PLAZA, and that is a different NYC experience. Have fun in New York!

Take this with a grain of salt if you want.I have only stayed at the Plaza and it was great. But at the 4 member updates we attended this past trip, this question was raised. Folks who have stayed at both said they would choose the Shelburne on a return trip. I'm sure you can't go wrong with either choice.Have fun

I would not stay at the Plaza again. Dark, small rooms were very disappointing. We were there during Thanksgiving week. Service was poor because numerous employees were laid off due to reducced tourism (following 9-11). I'm sure many have been put back on.

We didn't stay at the Plaza because we wanted to stay at a famous hotel. We wanted to stay in a luxury hotel and we were disappointed. As a matter of fact, the door to the bathroom literally fell off the hinges and it took to days for someone to check it out.

I won't go back.

We stayed in the lower point cost room at the Plaza last Christmas, not christmas night, it was early December. Our room was huge, much bigger than an OKW studio. We overlooked Central Park. If I had some points to burn and wanted to spend a few days in the city, I wouldn't hesitate in doing it again.

The Plaza is in a great location and the hotel, itself, is beautiful, but the room we were in was so-so, not great, and it was an expensive use of points.

We loved the Plaza and hope to stay there again someday. The room was not huge, but it was beautiful, with antiques and a view overlooking Central Park.

It's an old building, so it won't be the same experience as a modern luxury hotel. But its age is what gives it its beauty.

The service was impeccable. We were concerned about bringing our 3 yr old daughter, but she was welcomed and we didn't feel out of place with her at all. (She was on her best behaviour when we had breakfast in the Palm Court, thank goodness. I think the setting impressed her.)
