Almost all of my music is stored on my pc. I am having a bbq this weekend and I would like to find a way to play this music in my back yard without moving the pc. I have alot of stereo speakers and speaker wire, but the stereo speakers do not plug in with a jack, they just have wire ends. My pc speakers have the electric outlet on them, and I am not sure if I can splice in speaker wire to them. Does anybody know of a way I can do this. Can I hook up my pc to the stereo speakers or something? thanks guys.

do you have a stereo with aux. jacks..is so. you should be able to run speaker wire from the pc, to the stereo connect to the aux, jacks..then play the music thru the stereo, you'd probably get better volume this way..

Where would the speaker wire be coming from on the pc? And how would I choose what songs to play. If I select auxillary on the stereo would it just play whatever winamp is bringing up on the playlist? Is there some sort of adaptor I could pick up at radio shack that I would run from the pc to the stereo, and if so, do I plug it into where I have the speakers on the pc?

radio shack should have everything you need....does the stereo have the input jack .....I'm not sure if you can get a cable to go directly from pc to stereo or if you might have to do some splicing but it should be fairly simple...you just need to know what type of connections you have...

once connected you should be able to turn on pc and stereo pick playlist with winamp..select aux. on stereo and just adjust volume....

Go to Radio shack and get one of these:

This will plug into the back of your computer in the audio output jack, and go into your receiver into an auxilliary or 'tape' input.

Then play your music on the PC, turn it your stereo on and switch to that 'input' and whoila!.

It's catalog number 42-2483.

thanks..I was searching their website trying to find that...

And I suppose if you wanted to get stereo sound to your system, you would need to get one of these:

(Item 42-2570)

to split the signal coming from the PC, and get two of the items I listed in the post above.

That way you'd have 4 rca jacks, two for left and two for right channel.

you just lost me..if the stereo has rca jacks what is the second cable for...??/

never mind, I had something here but I didn't want to confuse everything more.

The Stereo most likely will have 4 inputs for a aux device. Red and White for the left channel and Red and White for the right channel.

The only input that is on my stereo that only has two inputs is a phonograph, and you then get all kinds of nasty hummmmmmm. I would assume other stereos are the same - UNLESS of course, it's just a mono input (left and right channels are the same). Without seeing his stereo, I am making assumptions.

Tigerroo, what brand/model of stereo were you planning on hooking this up to?

But wait, what if the distance to the stereo is too long and you only have standard RCA cables to connect with? Then you can get this:

(item 42-2542)

To hook to the 1/8 mini Y adapter that you need to get (post just before this one), and then hook your RCA cables up to the item in this post.

Have I confuseld you more?
yes, because if the stereo has rca jacks the first adapter you pictured would plug right in to the aux jack....

Yep, I'm confused. My pc is about 6ft from the stereo, maybe a bit more. And I do want stereo sound. Yes it has an aux. jack. Tell me the specific things I need. Then tell me what outlets to put them into. My brother will be here on Sunday and he's a pc/electronic whiz so if I haven't figured out how to do it by then he can help. I just want to have all of the stuff here and to at least try before he gets here, since everytime he comes for a visit I put him to work doing something on my pc and I don't want to do this unless desperate.

ssshhhh, I removed that post. If he needed to go longer than the 6 feet that the one cord provides, he'd need an RCA extension cord, which is male on both ends normally...

is the aux jack a single or does it have a left and right...in.....is it standard rca jack..

measure the distance to make sure you get enough cable..go to radioa shack. tell them exactly what connections you have and they will be able to figure out what cable or cables you need...

Get this:

42-2483.jpg

It's 6 feet long. Note that the 1/8 mini plug is a stereo plug, not 'mono'. If you need more than 6 feet, then ask them for 2 RCA cables with a male end and a female end to extend with.

This should do it....

This seems so easy. I don't know why I've never done it before. I called Radio Shack and he said $6. for everything. Too bad you guys aren't closer or I'd tell you to stop by and have some crabs on Sunday. Gonna be getting a bushel or two and steaming them with beer and old bay.
