We're thinking of going here on our day in Cozumel. Is it better to do the DCL excursion, or go there ourselves? How much is it if you go on your own? I'm assuming you can take a taxi from the pier there and one back. I just want to know if there is any extra hassle in doing it yourself.

In Cozumel, we did the Mayan Ruin tour that ended with a few hours at Playa Del Sol. We are two adults and felt it was a disappointing waste of time and money.
The Ruins tour had very little info given and it felt like it was all very touristy.
The Playa Del Sol was just a small beach area and you have to walk through small shops with folks trying to get your attentin to buy buy buy. We didn't have much time there anyway.
We've decided when we return to Cozumel on our November cruise, we are either going to stay on the ship or go off and walk on our own a bit and come back.

We took the same tour. I would say the ruins depends a LOT on your guide. We had an excellent guide who was very informative, and learned alot there, was quite enjoyable.

Now, for Playa Sol, I totally agree, it is very much a tourist trap. A very narrow walk with vendors on both sides harassing you on the way in and out to buy. Takes the fun right out of the beach knowing you have to face that leaving. If I were to go back there, I would instead go to Chakanaab Wildlife Park, sounded more fun from reports. If you just want beaches, I have read glowing reports on Mr Sancho's done on your own.

Our family went on the excursion that stayed the day. It was a bit more crowded than I would have liked but we had fun. My son loves just being in water so that is a bonus. I guess I am lucky because with my DS I don't have to worry about him asking to get things from the vendors so that part was not a problem for us.
