Play, Stay, Dine - good deal?

Last year in January, Disney offered the PSD deal and I'm wondering how this offer is compared to free dining or even a percentage discount? Is it a pretty good deal? We love getting free dining, but it doesn't look good. If this is a good deal or comparable, we may just be able to swing it. We like to stay moderate and eat a combo of QS and TS meals.

I am wondering the same thing. Hoping we can swing a spring trip if it is a good deal. I am thinking that I ran the numbers last year and it wasn't quite as good of a deal as FD though.

I'm hoping it ends up being a good deal. It is probably my only chance of heading to WDW next year. My husband isn't to fond of the idea going again next spring after we went this past spring.

I think it works out to be a pretty good deal if your party is mostly adults. Adults pay kid prices for tickets and meals. Kids are still kid prices for tickets and meals, so no savings there.

We went last year with the S/P/D, 2 adults and a 2-year old. We were happy with the price, although it was our first trip and we haven't experienced free dining yet...

A quick way I figure the $$ between the s/p/d package & FD is I just add the cost of the child's dining plan for everyone. The $$ between the child's price ticket and adult tickets isn't much, so I just go to the website and create a package and leave off the dining option, then just add on the cost of the child's dining.

For example:

6nights/7days POP (2 adult/2child)
7 day base tix
=$1,800 (this would be the FD'ing price)

Now figure the dining under the s/p/d

$15 (QS child's price) x 4= $60 per night x 6 nights = $360

So I figure it's going to cost about $360 extra for s/p/d vs FD'ing. I know you save a bit with the child's tickets, so it's actually a bit less.

This is the easiest way.

Is it as good as FD? No. On SPD you pay a small price for the DP versus getting it at no cost. Is it close? Yes. If you're upgrading your DP the upgrade is the exact same cost as FD, the only difference in price is the child pricing addition for the original DP.

But aren't the tickets at child's prices too for s/p/d? You'd have to factor that as well.

There is only a $20 difference in price for child vs adult tickets based on a 6-day pass. For our family of four adults on the S-P-D, it would work out to:

$18.88 x 4 ($75.52) for a 6-night total of $453.12

And we would only save a total of $80 for the child-priced tickets.

So obviously Free Dining is the better deal by far.

what dining plan would you get staying in a value prop? could you upgrade, would you pay the child upgrade price or the full upgrade value?

Values get QSDP. Upgrade prices are adult priced.

so would it be better (cheaper) for me to stay at POR (or the like ) in this case, to get the reg. dinning plan?

It depends on your party make up and room type. You can grab a room only rack rate off the website and then do the math for, each dining plan pretty easily to see which is cheaper.

With FD staying at value and upgrading was cheaper for us. I imagine it would be pretty similar with SPD.

i just can't wrap my head around this deal. would someone mind telling me which would be a better deal for me, the RO or P/S/D. we are 3 adults, mid jan @ pop for 5 nights. we would like to upgrade to the DDP. we would just get basic tickets.

Generally, dining discounts are better than RO with adults at the value level.

So, is this right? To upgrade to regular dining if staying value, it would be child's ticket price + the difference between adult ddp and adult qsdp. So approximately $20 + ($59 - $40). So approximately $39 per day for an adult to upgrade vs $20 for the qsdp? Man I wish AOA family suites would be considered for the regular dining plan. We like the room category best there for our family of 6 (4 Disney adults) but not e dining plan.

You've got the formula right. I didn't check the numbers but those look right too.

I hear you there! I'd rather stay at AOA, but will probably end up at a Mod this year to get the upgraded dining for the same money. The reason AOA guests only get the QS dining must be because they don't have a table service dining option on-site.

How does it work under s/p/d if I was originally planning to upgrade my just shy of 10 yo at the time of the trip to an adult meal plan?

We've been planning to pay OOP for meals for a few reasons. My kids are adventurous eaters, and I don't think a kid dining plan will work well for my eldest, who will be just shy of 10 when we travel. We are doing some buffets, but I really don't want to limit him to kid food. I think he and my 7 yo would probably prefer to share adult entrees, eat appetizers as a main course, etc. vs. have a kid dining plan.

I can't really compare a RO discount to s/p/d because I don't know how it would work if we were considering upgrading our 9 yo to an adult on the dining plan. Would it work like this: DH and I get the dining discount (child rate), and then one of those would basically be negated by upgrading DS1 to an adult? So basically it would only be the discount on tickets

I have no idea how to compare until I have that info. I'm still leaning toward OOP for meals and hoping we can apply a RO discount to a preferred room at POR.

There would be no extra charge to upgrade your 9yr old to the adult plan.
The way the s/p/d works is EVERYONE (ages 3+) pays child's price for tickets and food. Rack rate for the room. Actually a great deal if you want to upgrade a kid to adult.
