I'm trying to get ideas on an engagement ring. I'm not a big jewelry person.
I like the look of both. Platinum seems to be all the rage right now. I was told it is softer though, and could get damaged easier than the white gold.

Wondering if it would be better to get white gold - more diamond, or platinum - less diamond.

My head is spinning.

White gold - more diamond. I just like diamonds ;)

I just wanted to say congratulations and have fun picking out the ring. :)

My ring's platinum, but because I wanted an emerald instead of a diamond, the prongs had to be changed to white gold. The platinum would have crushed the poor emerald.

Guess it depends on your budget and if you care about the size of the diamond. I would choose the white gold and spend the "extra" on a bigger higher quality stone. :thumbsup2

I prefer white gold to platinum. I just think it looks prettier. But most women I know prefer platinum, some because it's more expensive, some because they think it looks prettier, and some because it's harder. Platinum is just too gray for me (even when it's polished).

I have both a platinum and white gold. I really can't tell much difference between the two (neither has a lot of metal; they are mostly stones).

I would go with more diamonds and white gold.

Platinum is also much heavier than white gold. I had my hand smashed in a car door and platinum is now too heavy to wear on those hands (it makes my hand hurt when I do)

It is stronger, but it also will scratch in a different way than white gold. It seems to lose the shine because of that quicker.

It is "more white" in coloring. White gold will always have a small tint to it of yellow. 10 or 14K white gold isn't bad. I would shy away from 18K since it is softer.

It would also depend on the diamonds. If you aren't getting top quality diamonds, you will see the color up against platinum. White gold doesn't seem to show it/affect it as much IMO

I prefer platinum. both my engagement ring and wedding band are platinum and they look beautiful. we had friends that went with the larger diamond/white gold, and she had some issues (the diamond fell out I think, can't remember exactly) and they ended up having it reset in platinum.

Thank you! I will :)

I think I am leaning towards something like this:

I'm going to try some on today to get more ideas.

My wife's engagement ring is platinum, as are both of our wedding rings. Just so you know, eventually, a white gold ring will begin to turn yellow and must be re-treated to bring back it's "white" appearance. Gold's natural color, is obviously, "gold". Platinum, which is untreated, always holds it's natural color.

This is virtually identical to mine! It's platinum. I LOVE it!!!

I prefer platinum.
I want that truly 'white' look.
It is harder.
I don't see occasional polishing as a problem.

Check out Bluenile.com

I got mine from there. Very happy with it!
Similar to what you are looking at, it is an emerald cut, and has baguettes on both sides, with a tiny round diamond on each side after the baguettes.

I will go look for a link.

My ring is platinum yes it is HARDER but it scratches somewhat easily. Over time white gold will turn yellow and platinum will turn gray. Also white gold had trace amounts of Nickle in it which some are allergic to including myself.

This is my ring

I love bluenile.com. :)

I'm building a wishlist there.

That's really pretty!

I was reading in that link posted earlier that the white gold needs to be resurfaced every 3 years or so. I wonder how much it costs to do that?
I think it said platinum should be resurfaced also, and it was much mire expensive.

Decisions!

This is on my bluenile.com wish list:
