Platinum kids: why no substitute for Palo dinner?

I think any child under 18 who is platinum on DCL already has a very good life.:rolleyes1

Also the benefit is for everyone in the stateroom over 18. If I am platinum and 4 of my friends are not but staying in the room, they still get the Palo credit because most Castaway club stuff is set up by stateroom.

Is your platinum child traveling in a room with adults who are not platinum?
My 2 kids and I are platinum. We are looking into traveling with family in the Fall who are not. If each of the kids were listed in one of the other staterooms, would each of those rooms be able to share this benefit. Would the adults be able to join us in Palo. I have never eaten at Palo but it would be nice to go with family when traveling together.

I'm pretty sure that is a yes. Just don't change them out of those rooms when you get there, or the benefits would go away.

My granddaughters are platinum. Got it a few years ago when they were 14 & 16. I think a desert at the candy store (where available) or specialty coffee, or smoothie would be a nice option. Still cheaper than the $50 allowance.

Well, all of the adults can go to Palo, regardless of CC status.

I'm not sure if they'll all receive the $50 discount, though, since there aren't any adults from those other staterooms attending.

This works when there is an adult platinum member in each cabin - Palo is free for all adults in the cabin. Not sure how it works if the only platinum member in a cabin is a child.

It works for any platinum guest. My platinum niece, who was 11 at the time, treated her non-platinum grandparents to dinner at Palo.
It’s kind of surprising that they have continued to apply the platinum benefits to everyone in the stateroom regardless of status as long as there’s one in the stateroom. So many things have been chopped away or gotten more expensive for less compared to when we first started sailing DCL. With so many platinum members that needed to add Pearl they must be comping so many Palo dinners/brunches. They did change the menu and the Ala carte vs prix fixe to help get guests to spend more.

We did find one restriction to this - and TBH, I don't know how it would work if there wasn't another Platinum adult guest, but on the Magic last summer, my SIL (who is silver) was not allowed to use the Platinum benefit unless either MIL or FIL (the only platinum members of the family at that time) were there too, even though she was in one of their rooms.

To make a long story short, MIL/FIL were doing brunch at an inconvenient time for something the SILs were doing, so she was going to go have dessert one night on her own, and they said MIL or FIL had to be there too.

So my hypothetical question is...if I sent platinum DS (10) with my friends and his dad/my husband (who is Gold) - would they not be allowed to have the Palo benefit (i.e., I am not even on the cruise)? Or was there just confusion on the Magic?

The benefit is attached to the platinum member. Your son definitely wouldn't be able to attend Palo brunch since he's not 18. Your husband also would not because he's not a guest of the platinum member using their benefit.

Then that is a change, and I apologize for the bad info. This was pre-pandemic, and that cruise we had 3 cabins. All six of the adults went to dinner (4 platinum, 2 silver). None of the four kids went, obviously. There were three checks to account for beverages. All dinners were comped.

I think there are 2 situations being discussed.

My understanding is if all the adults (both platinum and non-platinum) dine at Palo together then it gets comped even for non-platinum adults in a room with platinum minors. Essentially they are considered guests of the platinum adults in the same party.

The situations @Calantha reports/suggests has a non-platinum adult trying to dine at Palo without a platinum adult. I don't believe the benefit extends that far.

I don't think it's a change. I think @lanejudy got it right.

I’d rather a $50 credit than Palo..

I think we’ve used it once since it was a perk (just booked #16) because we usually book late so it’s a hassle trying to use it

My platinum 8 year old we consider the “cheap date” as she’s who moves around to get whoever we sail with platinum benefits because who couldn’t use another beach towel

Palo dinners are typically not that hard to secure- even last minute. Usually there is even availability on board.

Palo Brunch is a whole other story!

Not on the Treasure. We normally sail the fantasy - 7 weeklong cruises in less than 2 years. Most booked VGT. We were able to secure a Palo reservation every cruise even booking late.

Fast forward to the Treasure. We booked full price + a couple months out for a sailing in 3 weeks. When I went to try and book Palo, not one reservation for the whole week. For Palo dinner, palo brunch, Enchante dinner and lunch. All gone. DCL did release a few extra reservations last week, but I have never been unable to get a Palo dinner until now. This is cruise #16 for us.

THIS. They definitely seemed to hold back spots to book on board. Or a lot of people decide to cancel and free up spots as well.
Or they will literally add a whole other day of service. We had this on the Treasure in Feb-all the brunch slots were booked, when I went to dining changes to see about any slots they didn't have any, but told us they might be adding another day. They did, on Tortola day, and we got a spot! I don't think that's the norm, but clearly the demand was high enough that they added a whole other brunch day for our sailing.

We’ve had this happen on multiple 7 night sailings on the fantasy. They will keep a waitlist of people wanting Palo brunch and open on a port day if demand is there.

Oh wow, I had never heard of that before! (I knew they sometimes did brunch on Nassau day for shorter cruises and maybe even Castaway Cay, but never any other port).
