Plants sold in The Land

When you take the Behind the Seeds Tour, you get to meet the people responsible (interns) for cultivating and selecting your little plant friends. Our intern said she wanted to figure out how to cultivate the sensitive plant, because she thought that would be a big seller, and I agreed.

DS got a plant. It lived for a year & then we got 2 kittens. Lilo & Stitch, they killed it. So sad for DS. So we would love to get another but the cats destroy them.

We bought sensitive plant seeds at Williamsburg, VA 2 years in a row, and our plants grew great! I'm on the lookout for more seeds for next summer. It would be nice if LWTL would sell seed packets for unusual or hard-to-find plants and vegetables.

Our tour guide was an entomologist, so she talked a lot about bugs. :)

When we took our plant home we were told not to leave it in your suitcase if you are flying to carry it on because it will freeze under the plane. We were able to carry it on but we left it out for security to check it not in your carry on bag.

They aren't hard to grow but I'm not sure how well they'd take to mass production and travel as souvenirs because they can be "overstimulated". After we took the tour I found a catalog that sells the seeds and we grew them for the kids' classrooms that year. DD's 2nd grade teacher (she's in 6th now) still has hers in her classroom! I need to order another packet because my older DD wants to grow one for this year's science teacher who has tons of plants all over her classroom.

BTW, if anyone is looking for seeds this is where we ordered ours: http://www.seedsavers.org/Details.aspx?itemNo=1078

Thanks! If I can't find the seeds in a B&M store, I will order them online. The sensitive plant is very easy to grow. You have to soak the seeds first, and then plant them. We've had great success with the plants for the past 2 summers. Unfortunately, we don't have room for plants in our house so once the cold weather hits the plants are done.
