Plans for Veterans Day?

Hello Dis Friends: My children are off from school tomorrow & my DH & I are trying to think of something fun to do for the day. We live too far from WDW or that would be the number one choice. Any suggestions?

What is near to you? And is the weather good for outdoor activities?

I'm thinking, since your are in New England there is probably somthing nearby that many locals have never done, but that tourist enjoy. Be a "tourist" for a day and go to a local attraction, tour, zoo or museum.

I'm going to take my kids in for their flu shot. I think they'd rather be in school

Maybe go to a Veterans' Day event, like a parade or to a museum that might be having some special prresentations?

OT - My DD doesn't get the day off. Tomorrow morning her school has what I always call "Speed-Dating-with-Teachers", those little snippets of time where you get to line up and then sit down for a couple of minutes to discuss your kid with individual teachers in a gym full of anxious parents. (Nobody comes to these things unless they're anxious). Oh, and you always have some parent in front of you who uses this time as an opportunity to have a long, drawn-out 15-minute in-depth conversation with teachers about their kid's grades or issues.

I hope they have timers this year.

If the weather is still nice, something outside? Golf range, batting cages (some are indoors), go carts place. We have a Dave and Buster's which is like a grown up Chuck E. Cheese, that the kids eat and play games at and get tickets for prizes. Lunch/movies out? Indoor pool? A lot of gyms offer a one day pass for a reasonable price and have basketball courts, climbing walls, etc. Do you have any indoor water parks by you such as Great Wolf Lodge or Coco Key? Paint pottery for holiday gifts coming up? Shopping? Renting a bunch of movies and have a hang out day with pizza and a sundae bar for dessert?
And like a pp mentioned, sightseeing something in your area that you have not done before? Any National Parks by you?
These are some of the things we do when we have a day off with kids. They are scouts too, so we use those days to catch up on working on badges, etc. too. (and sometimes schoolwork!)

Thanks for all the great suggestions! The temp. will be around 50, warm for us hardy New Englanders! I have three children, one in elementary school, one in middle school & one in high school. It can be difficult to find things they all like. One mentioned driving to NY City, eating at a deli, getting cheese cake & either going to the Museum of Natural History or Central Park. I love that idea but it would be a bit costly & time consuming. The other two did not like this idea anyway. I mentioned going to Boston & walking around the Common, going out to lunch & maybe looking into Duck Tours. They aren't sure if they want to do this. We have many options, just can't all agree. Thanks again for the suggestions. If anyone else thinks of anything, please let me know.

My DH & I are thinking the local tourist route is a good one. We have many places within driving distance to us like Lexington/Concord, Boston, Portsmouth, Manchester....the list goes on & on. I will ask my kids to name a few things they would like to do & see if they can find some common ground.

School is out, so will probably have a house full of kiddies . We plan do a craft and bake cookies!

If you do decide to come visit the MoS, I advise buying your Harry Potter tickets ahead of time at mos.org. I know we're expecting high crowds tomorrow (we received an email for all staff to park off-site tomorrow- doesn't affect me since I take the train in but still indicative of high crowds expected). The Harry Potter exhibit is fun, particularly if you're into Harry Potter (I brought my parents and husband to the staff preview and even my non-HP fan dad enjoyed it). Also if you decide to do MoS, I'd say park at a train station and ride in rather than drive in- traffic can be a nightmare around the museum (just my observation as a pedestrian in the area) on "normal" days, so I'm not sure what it will be like tomorrow. Also, you can catch the Duck Boats at MoS, if you decide to go that route.


Edited to add: I just checked online and there are already several times that are sold-out for the HP exhibit tomorrow (it's a hard ticket exhibit so you have timed tickets), so definitely check online if you do decide to go.

Here's an idea... Veteran's Day is about honoring the service that men and women in uniform have given to their country. What better way to celebrate it than go out and do something to benefit your community? My brother will be spreading mulch and cleaning up the grounds of the local senior center with his scout troop. I will be volunteering at a free health clinic at the local women and children shelter. I know it's sort of late to find something for tomorrow, but maybe keep this in mind for future Veteran's days?
