Planning our Wilderness Lodge Adventure! Nov 8-15 ~ We are back!

You were right! The second day was much better than the first one for all of you!!!

You had some delicious meals! I would have done the same thing that Henry did and said, "yum, yum, yum!"

Fun DIS meet!

I have never seen a bridge that does that before!

Looks like you guys had fun on your camping trip! The last time I went camping was 4th of July in the white hot Texas panhandle. UH! NEVER AGAIN!

Do you know anything about the gingerbread houses and edible Christmas decorations at the resorts? I'd love to maybe see one in progress during the week we are at WDW. Perhaps you or one of your readers could share any info you may have about them. I'm looking for Christmas card photo-ops!

Oh man, I don't do well in really hot weather-I wouldn't have enjoyed that camping trip either!

I don't know a whole lot about the gingerbread houses/edible decorations...I recall hearing about one that is at the Grand Floridian. I am not certain when it goes up, or if any of the other resorts have one. I did read that MK is the only park really decked out during our visit in November (Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP) is going on at MK), and the resorts decorate somewhere around the 15th. I've heard it's just like suddenly BOOM! they are decorated! You wake up in a Christmas wonderland. Kinda neat, I hope it happens while we are there! :goodvibes With all that said, I am not sure in includes the gingerbread house at the GF? Someone here is bound to know though...

Brooke, thanks for the mini-TR and great pics! It seems like just yesterday I read your AKL disneymoon trip report. The next thing--you were pregnant. I can't believe that Henry is almost one! He is so adorable!

I know it! I can't believe how quickly time has gone by. We certainly did NOT plan to get pregnant that early in our marriage-but well, things happen, eh? And Henry is a huge blessing to our lives!

You were right! The second day was much better than the first one for all of you!!!

Fun DIS meet!

I have never seen a bridge that does that before!

Day three went pretty well too-I hope to get that up here tonight yet.

The DIS meet was awesome! It was so much fun to meet her...I hope my paths cross with more DISers in November.

The bridge is really neat-I'm not sure there are many out there like it... Right before the sailboat went under there were some kids biking / running across it and when they blew the whistle the kids just started yelling "Don't raise it yet! Don't raise it!" and they BOOKED it across that bridge!

08-28-08 - Camping Mini-TR, Conclusion, Day Three

As I said, the night before our last day we slept REALLY well. I did hear Henry wake up twice and whine for about 1.4 seconds until he found his Nuk and then he was back out.

So, we woke up happy and refreshed. I was slightly happy to be done with camping, but sad as well-there was so much more in Duluth and Two Harbors that I wanted to explore!

The morning was cool, but beautiful.
IMG_9354Small.jpg

I'm thinkin' cool and beautiful mornings are fairly standard in these parts. ;)

I went and got coffee for Joe and I. I went in my pajamas. No make-up, no contacts (don't worry, I wore my glasses), morning breath and all. Don't worry-I didn't have to get out of the car-it was a drive up coffee place.

We drank our coffee slowly at our picnic table and just soaked in the morning. Henry had some milk and we all had a couple muffins I had made at home.

After Joe headed off to the showers and I started to organize/pack things. Henry hung out in the tent and got into things. Such as the wipes. He managed to pull half the wipes out of the package before I saw it all!

Looking so innocent...
IMG_9361Small.jpg

The clouds were hanging really low on the lake-can't tell as well in the picture, but it was really neat looking.
IMG_9367Small.jpg

While Joe packed the car I went off to the showers. When I got back we took down the tent and headed out of our campsite and back toward Duluth.

Joe had mentioned a mansion tour that he did years ago with his family and he would like to check it out again. thewesterberg knew what he was talking about right away, Glensheen Mansion. So, we stopped and found they were giving tours on Sunday-another one was about to happen in about 20 minutes.

We hung out in our car for 20 minutes, I did my hair.
IMG_9398Small.jpg

I'm not too shy. ;)
And don't worry-it doesn't look like that for very long!

The tour started and we actually missed the first bit because we got caught up in a film about the family that built the home and didn't hear them announcing that they were leaving. :headache:

The tour was really neat! I love history and so does Joe, so this was a real treat for us. I won't bore ya'll with the details-but in short, this husband and wife both came from very humble backgrounds, made some smart financial moves in buying land waaaaay 'up nort' Minnesota, now called the Iron Range and sold it, in the early 1900's for 15 MILLION. Think of what 15 million is today. Now think of what that was 100 years ago.

Ya, these people were loaded! But they seemed to be very normal and humble about their wealth. Here is the wikipedia article on the mansion and the family: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glensheen_Historic_Estate

And a brief history on the murder, which is well known here in Minnesota...
The family had, if I remember correctly, 6 children. The one woman never did marry, but she adopted two children. The one was/is a sociopath and ended up killing her nurse and her mother in the home, there was a film in the 70's made about it. She has been in and out of jail her whole life and is currently serving time, an 80 year old woman, for Identity Theft.

The house and grounds were beautiful. We weren't allowed to take pictures inside, so here are some of the outside:

IMG_9404Small.jpg

This is the 'acorn room'. It is a breakfast room right off the kitchen. There were many live plants in there and it was decorated to look like you were inside an acorn. The green tile on the walls is simply beautiful-they cost $5 a tile back then, and now would be around $500 a tile.
IMG_9405Small.jpg

IMG_9406Small.jpg

The tent you see in the background there was from a wedding the previous night. I cannot even begin to fathom how much it would cost to have your wedding here.

While walking around the grounds I saw this:
IMG_9415Small.jpg

so pretty!

Henry and I by the fountain.
IMG_9421Small.jpg

The view of the lake-which the family actually didn't have-there were many trees here until the 40's which blocked this view. The family appericated their privacy and kept the trees. But the view is spectacular. I could tell the wedding had a bonfire on the beach the night before too...so neat!
IMG_9425Small.jpg

After the tour we were both hungry. We had seen a pizza place near the lift bridge the previous night, and since Joe is a pizza fiend, this is where we ended up. When we walked up, we realized it was another Grandma's! It's called "Grandma's Sports Garden".

It was a BIG place!
IMG_9442Small.jpg

Reall neat inside, this was above us:
IMG_9448Small.jpg

Stuff hanging off the walls everywhere...
IMG_9452Small.jpg

Remember when I went to NYC and I mentioned "Frickles"? Fried pickles? And how much I loooove them? Well, they had 'em!

IMG_9453Small.jpg

And, somehow-because I thought it was impossible, these were even better than those in NYC! Probably because they are made with Minnesota pickles and not icky NYC ones...:rolleyes1

Anyway....we also got pizza of course! This was a "wrapped pizza".
IMG_9455Small.jpg

DELISH!

We were so stuffed, but it was an excellent conclusion to our "Non-WeightWatchers Weekend"!

After this it was already getting to be late in the day, so we headed out of town. We had to stop a few times on the way home because Henry was a bit fussy, but we still made decent time back home.

We had a great weekend, despite a few rough patches. I hope we go again next year!!

Yum! I should have eaten breakfast before looking at that wrap pizza. Your weekend sounds like it was so much fun!

Great pictures! Sounds like the trip turned out fabulous! Love the hair!!! :lmao:

I totally want a pizza wrap now. :rotfl2:

The pictures are great. What a beautiful place!

Taking all the wipes out while no one is looking sounds just like something Brooklynn would do.

I am making a 'yuck' face at the fried pickles. I like pickles, and I'm southern, so I like fried, but the two together are sounding less than delicious to me. What is in the sauce? Maybe someday I will try one and like it, but for now, I'm just going to finish typing with my yuck face on.

Now the s'mores...I can happily type that with a YUM face! :thumbsup2

Looks like you guys had an awesome time with a variety of activities. The pictures of Henry in action are so cute!

I love the picture of Henry peering out of the tent. It's just adorable. This is the second time you have made me think "Fried Pickles, hmmm?!"...I think I just might have to try some of those. Your camping trip looks like it was a whole lot of fun. It almost makes me want to pull out our tent and head out into the great wide world.:thumbsup2 NOT LONG NOW and you will be at WDW! Any new planning updates?

It was a great time, I'm really glad we finally went. We had been talking about going camping for 2 summers now! The wrap pizza was delicious!

That new camera of yours is great! What beautiful pictures!

Thank you! We LOVE the new camera, it was worth the money being that we are both into photography. I am excited to use it in Disney World!

My DH always gets a kick out of watching me do my hair each morning. Once I got Henry up with my hair looking like that and he just stared at me with such a confused look on his face! :rotfl:

I totally want a pizza wrap right now too-sounds like a perfect lunch! :goodvibes

Fried pickles are AWESOME MeMom! I'm surprised you haven't ever had 'em-they are a food from the south...or so I thought! :confused3 The sauce served here was ranch. In NYC it's a horseradish sauce. I prefer the horseradish sauce, but the ranch was good enough for me!

S'mores are my absolute favorite thing about camping. And thankfully, in November, I will also be eating them at 50's Prime Time! :woohoo:

The North Shore of Minnesota is simply beautiful. Lake Superior is breathtaking-all the pine trees and the small towns, and the thick history of the area....I love it.

For Henry's birthday (TOMORROW!) one of his gifts is a box of Kleenex so he can pull them out one after another, just like he loves to do with the wipes!

You gotta try the fried pickles! They are delish!

After the trip I asked Joe if he ever wanted to possibly camp at WDW. He looked at me like I was crazy. :lmao:

Thank you for the compliment on the Henry picture as well. I love him in that little black hat. :goodvibes

Planning updates....YEP! I've got a bit to share. I'm waiting for something to come in the mail and then I can share with a picture... And next week I am going to buy the posterboard to start on my countdown. 69 days left!!

09-02-2008 - A Craft by the "Craft Challenged"

As I mentioned earlier during my debate of "Should I make tye-dye shirts, or not?" I am sure I mentioned how incredibly un-crafty I am.

I can reformat my computer.
I can troubleshoot complex Java errors.
I know what a Web Application Server does.
I can program a website.

But give me some markes and glue and you have a mess. A gold-star attempt, yes, but a giant and quite ugly mess!

(btw, it was decided to not attempt the tye-dye shirts. I know it's a pathetic mess just waiting to happen...:sad2: )

Therefore, I am very proud of the Disney Countdown chart that I just finished!!!! Look at me! The Craft Challenged made a pretty cool craft!!!!! :cool2:

Here is the whole thing-60 days, starting September 9th and ending the day before we arrive, November 7.

IMG_0041Small.jpg

And under each Mickey head is a surprise. A sticker, a bit of triva, a reminder, an announcment of how many days are left, etc. Here is a sneak peak!

IMG_0042Small.jpg

I hung it on the inside of our hallway closet. I would normally place it FRONT AND CENTER, but we are putting the house on the market this week and while the chances are high people will look into this closet anyway and see the countdown, at least it's not blaring on a wall somewhere. I was going to put it in the spare room/my office, but I'm only down there twice a week. I'm in the hallway closet many times a day.

I'm excited to start ripping those little Mickey heads off the paper and sharing the tidbit underneath with Joe!

And off topic, well, it's about one member of our travelling party-and by now you've figured out I go off topic a lot...

Henry's first birthday was Monday!!!!! (i didn't cry!) Here are a few pics.

IMG_9744Small.jpg

As soon as he noticed there was cake he started crying and reaching for it.

IMG_9845Small.jpg

As you can tell, Henry enjoyed his cake!

IMG_9888Small.jpg

"Mom, can we open the big present first?"

The plan is to celebrate again while in Disney World, just as a family. But, we aren't 100% sure we will do it...maybe just something small. I have the special shirt for him and then we'll buy a cupcake or something that he can smash/eat at our dinner at Chef Mickey's on our first full day. Instead we'll just make the trip a celebration of our anniversary since it is just a couple weeks prior to our trip. Thinking about two cakes, plus all those desserts, in one week, ugh!

Alright, I'm off to clean a bit to prep the house for being on the market. :headache:

Your countdown calendar is very cool! For someone who claims they are craft-challenged, you did an excellent job! :goodvibes

Henry truly enjoyed his cake, didn't he??? :rotfl: Cute pics!!!

Are you still planning to do a haircut at the Harmony Barbershop in MK? We don't have children yet, but I've already told DH that our next trip will be around our child's 1st bd so we can commemorate the event with a haircut! That is so like me.... Planning the next trip before we even go on the first (or in our case, third) trip!

Thank you! I was really nervous about making the calendar, but as I started it I was pleased with how it turned out. I had started making lines to form little boxes and the lines were ending up crooked, so I flipped the tag board over and just went line-less. Less is more in my case!

And yes, Henry LOVED the cake. It took him a bit to take a bite, he kept just playing with it, but after he did it was wide-open mouth from there. He even managed to get cake and frosting on his feet. I haven't a clue how, but it happened.

Very cute countdown! :thumbsup2
Henry is so cute! Love the cake picture.

Thank you on all three items! :goodvibes

:rotfl: that's just like me! I am planning our Disney cruise in my head, thinking what event I want to plan it around this time... Anyway, YES, we are still doing the haircut. I was just thinking about it yesterday, I need to refresh myself on their hours and all that....I know a line forms very quickly, so we might have to make rope drop that day as well. I'll be sure to take lots of pics so you can plan out your future DS/DD's event. :lmao:

Brook - Your countdown calendar came out great! (I have yet to start mine!:rolleyes1 )

And HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY TO HENRY!!!!party: (a little late!) That picture of him covered in cake is just too precious!

We're back and I'm getting caught up before I dive into my TR!

First off, love the pictures from your trip up north! It reminds me that our family lives in a beautiful city/area!

Grandma's... mmmmmmmmm yum! And the pizza thing... aren't those good?! DH won tickets to a Super Bowl party from a radio station. It was held at the Sports Garden with a free buffet for the first quarter. Believe me, there was a big ol' piece of that on my plate!

And the Lift Bridge - even living here my whole life, it's still exciting to go see the bridge go up, especially when there's a 1,000 footer heading out! We like to go stand on the pier under the bridge when it comes down! Only drawback is getting "bridged" - a good excuse if you're late somewhere!

And HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY HENRY!!

Okay, I think there's more I was going to respond to, but that's all I can remember right now.

Oh, I know one more thing... Nice countdown calendar. :thumbsup2 And you say you're not crafty!!

Thank you! I caught a free moment in my evening the other night, the yellow tag board was calling my name...I knew if I didn't get going on it, it would end up being put off and off and off. And no worries for you on the countdown, unfortunatly, you've still got plenty of time. Sigh.

YOU'RE BACK!!!!! :woohoo: Well, I guess that's a :guilty: for you though...;) I just said to Joe last night..."I wonder if thewesterberg and family are back, I can't wait to read about Juniors reaction!" I hope you have dived into your report by now...:hyper:

We really had a great time camping up there, I hope to make it a tradition as long as we are in Minnesota. Pretty scenery and good food, what more can one ask for?!

 about getting "bridged" and using it as an excuse of being late-reminds me of the story you told of that woman picking her child/ren up always using the bridge excuse! :rotfl:

Henry's party went great! We all had a good time, it was hot and humid, but I'm sorta glad in a way. His birthday will pretty much mark the end of summer each year, so it's nice that it's still hot before we get our 45 million days of snow.

Trust me, I'm NOT crafty!! The back of the tagboard has my first lame attempt. But, I do have to say that this is one of the few crafty things I've done that I'm actually happy with. And as we peel off the Mickey heads it will only get better!

Okay, I'm off to see if you have started your report....popcorn:: (and that's literal, I really just finished some popcorn...)

09-03-2008 - A UPS Delivery

Today when I got home from work I noticed the very recognizable UPS sticker on our front window and saw a package at the front door. Much to my delight it was from Disneyshopping.com!!! (not that I was expecting anything else, but it still excited me!)

About a week ago or so, DH and I saw a $5 shirt sale on Disneyshopping.com and bought our Mickey/Minnie shirts, and one additional one for me. The current plan is to wear these on MK day.

Joe:
IMG_0049Small.jpg

Me:
IMG_0047Small.jpg

Henry:
IMG_6702Small.jpg

And here is my extra shirt, I just love it! I'm thinking it will be perfect for Chef Mickey's.

Front:
IMG_0045Small.jpg

Back:
IMG_0046Small.jpg

And the best thing about these shirts was not the price. The top 2 were $5 and the bottom one was $12 I believe. While, that is a great deal - the best thing about these shirts is that they are a SIZE SMALLER than Joe or I have been in a veryyyyyy long time, and they even fit right now! They will look better should we loose a bit more (which we WILL!), but they are wearable now! I cannot believe it, I'm just thrilled. We were nervous about buying the shirts, wondering if we would fit into them, but now we know we for sure will. YAHOO! :yay:

With that said...I gained a pound from camping. :rotfl: And it was worth every bite!

Yay for a Disneyshopping.com package, and yay for Henry turning one!

A birthday and a camping trip are fun ways to end a summer and move into the fall.

Still not yay for fried pickles, though. ;)

And definitely noy yay for the fact that I am up at 1:26 a.m. :sad2:
I'm going to try to go back to sleep now and catch some elusive zzzzz's.

I hope you got some sleep last night MeMom! I know you are a night owl, and a morning owl, but I hope you got some good quality z's in! :goodvibes Now, I'm off to catch up on your TR.
