Planning a trip around a race

Hello all,

If you're going to a Disney marathon, half, or 5k, when do you plan your trip? Before the race, after the race, or during the race?

The longest distance I've ran so far is about 5.25 miles - but I'd like to do the ToT 10 miler in September. So I'm trying to figure out how the week-long trip I plan on taking at the same time should be arranged - should I go on 9/28 (the day before the race) and come home 10/5, or should I plan the race for the end of my week and go 9/23 - 9/30 (my original plan)? Or, should the race be in the middle of the trip? I'm trying to consider all the factors - how will walking in the park all week when I should be tapering affect my feet and legs, or should I be running a longer race and then dealing with post-race fatigue right when my vacation should be starting? I felt great after my 5 mile run and could have went further - and the next day I was completely fine as well.

What do you do? What's your suggestion? We figured we could just hang out at HS until 3 a.m. after the race and use Sunday as a chill day so we didn't hit the crowds at Epcot on the first F&W weekend...

In real short terms, I would split the week. Maybe come down on Thursday and then make most of my stay after the race.

However, for a 10 miler or half, it is just not all that important. You will want to not park heavily the day or day and a half before that race but if you do as you originally thought, you should be ok. If you were talking first marathon, then I would be a lot more firm with the guidance.

Again, preference would be to do most post race, but for a 10 miler, just cool it between you visit to the expo and the race

Interesting. That was my general thought. I haven't done any distance past the 5.25 that I ran while training for the Princess (and then I went and messed up my foot on a short run that week, and the training went down the toilet). I'm thinking that coming down on Friday and then leaving the following Friday would work out best, for several reasons.

Thanks for the input.
