We have decided to leave a day early and knock out 1/2 the drive the first day and finish up on Saturday.

DH wants to get somewhere around Brunswick. Not sure of the best forum to post this.

Can anyone recommend places to stay or to avoid in this area? I would prefer someplace with free internet and a free breakfast.

Thanks!

There's A LOT of construction around exit 38 and 36 which is where the hotels in Brunswick are located...

If I were you I'd keep going to Kingsland and Saint Mary's, GA (I live in Saint Mary's, so I'm biased to the area...:rotfl:)

Exit 3 (Kingsland, GA exit) has several hotels and restaraunts including a new Hampton Inn and a new La Quinta--as well as others...

Just me humble opinion, you know what they say about those...:lmao::lmao:

Edited to add, the eatin' places off Exit 3 are closer to the Interstate and easier to get to....I work in Brunswick (off Exit 38) so I'm intimately familiar with both areas...LOL

When we drive we usually stop at Kingsland. It's an easy off/on the freeway, plenty of hotels and places to eat and the gas has always been cheapest. We used to stop overnight at the super 8 here, it was cheap and clean, but haven't stayed here in a few years.

Thanks for the Kingsland recommendation. If we aren't too tired and can keep going, we will aim for there. A quick peek at trip advisor shows the hotels are a bit cheaper there. Closer to FL and cheaper, works for me :cool1:

Last October we stayed at a LaQuinta in Brunswick and it was great, right beside a Cracker Barrell, free breakfast with LaQuinta waffles :lovestruc but don't remember about the internet. Can't remember which exit it was off of . . . but we are quite partial to LaQuinta! :thumbsup2 We're looking for somewhere to stay similar this area for our October trip, thanks DisneyFed for the inside scoop on contruction!

No problem...all of you guys headed South on 95 need to be aware that a couple of counties South of Savannah, you're going to hit some pretty heavy construction (widening of I95). When you hit Macintosh County, I 95 is still 3lanes. You're going to start coming up to a truck weigh station, and it will go back down to two lanes---this is where construction will start, and it's nasty.

Concrete Jersey barriers on both sides with nowhere to go in an emergency. Also, all the bridges North and one south of Brunswick are being worked on as well, so it's tight.

Construction zone will continue through Brunswick, so at least 20-25 miles...

Keep that in mind if you're already in heavy traffic before you get there...

NMK, the exit you stayed on is Exit 36. There's an A and a B side to the exit (Hwy 341 one headed north, one south). At varying times they have CLOSED ONE SIDE of the exit and detoured traffic.

In typical GA DOT fashion, the closures and the Exit itself are VERY POORLY marked!!! Just an FYI.

OP, seriously, Kingsland is not that much farther. I live 7 miles off the interstate from Kingsland, and it takes me less than 45 minutes to get from my house to my office (FLETC--which is security controlled), which is also a bit off the interstate.

I would say you only have 20-25 minutes more of driving time from Brunswick to Kingsland, if that. The construction ends just south of Exit 36.

DisneyFed: Do you happen to know when the construction will be completed? We'll be heading down there in the latter part of December.

We usually stay at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Brunswick (near the FLETC). That would have been my recommendation for a great hotel and restaurant. (The suites actually have a door separating the bedroom from the sofa bed area.)

BTW, if you haven't already, I would post your very useful i95 construction information to the Transportation board.

No I haven't posted this on the Transportation board yet, I guess I probably should.

The Holiday Inn and Suites is right off Exit 38 is my exit (I actually turn right there at the hotel and go in the back gate)

I'm deployed right now, but it was still going on as of a month ago, and my wife says the construction is still there. I imagine some of it will still be there when you go through...

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up...that construction zone can really be a pain, and there's no real way around it:upsidedow

We stayed in Brunswick last year- and we are staying in Kinsland this year.

I believe it is the Days Inn that I recieved from Hotwire.

Thanks for the construction work updates! :thumbsup2

This information is so helpful -- great to talk to somebody who lives near there! DisneyFed -- if you're still following this post, I have a question about the Kingsland exits. When we come down in October we will be pulling a pop-up camping trailer behind our Honda Pilot and understandably we won't want to navigate the construction exits with this :scared1: Is there a specific hotel in Kingsland area that you could recommend that is not far off I-95 and would have ample parking room (we would need to park across some spaces with the camper)?

Thanks again!

If you're pulling a pop, I'd stay at either the new Hampton Inn or the new La Quinta.....

It'll be super easy....exit off exit 3, go straight through the stop light, both hotels are right there on your right...

Cracker Barrel is right there too:rotfl2:, Ihop is right on the same road, Waffle House across the street.....

BK, Mickie D's, Chic Fil A , Wendy's, Applebee's, Ruby Tuesday, Taco Bell, Sonny's are to your left (East) from the red light you just went through from 95, but only a mile or so (if that) away...

Gas Stations--which will be the easiest to get into and out of with a camper-- will be to your Right (West) at the red light from 95 (Race Track, Pilot, Flash Foods---I recommend Pilot, which is usually the least expensive of the three, but it's a little farther west--it's also easier to turn back left out of if you're pulling anyting--I pull a 20 foot bass boat, that's important to me)

Then to leave, you just go straight back through the red light up onto I 95--so easy they're ought to be a law against it...:lmao:

(Flip flop the gas and food if you're coming from the hotels....food will be right, gas will be left)

You can't miss the I95 signs....

Wow, don't I sound like a little tour guide...any guesses as to what the Government pays me to do???:lmao::lmao::lmao:

I live to the left (east) off the interstate in Saint Mary's...it's a quaint little town, but off the beaten pass...

There's a Walmart East as well---which is all we have so it's well stocked---you know, just in case.

DH said we will make it to Kingsland so ..... I booked Comfort Suites at Kingsland today - 7 day advance rate was only $63 (plus tax was $71 I think). 2 queen beds and a sofa bed, indoor pool, free WiFi and free breakfast!

You'll take a left at Exit 3....back under the interstate..you'll go past "Cheap o's" and a Flash Foods "Exxon" and there will be a break in the median so you can turn left---JUST BEFORE CHIC FIL A....turn there...there's a couple of hotels down in that area, Comfort Suites is one of them.

If you happen to miss that break, just go to the next red light (a couple hundred yards away) past Chic fil A and at Applebees...turn left, go to the stop sign (50 yards) take another left---takes you right there!

Have fun!!

Are Brunswick and Kingsland the two places to stay along the way. DH was thinking Savannah was one of the bigger areas but maybe it is not a good area to stop. What do you think?
We are driving from Ontario Canada so hopefully we can make it this far with our 2 kids ages 3 and 4.5!!

Nothing wrong with Savannah.....

Kingsland just about an hour and fifteen minutes to hour and a half closer to WDW...

Yes, being closer to Disney sold me on it. Also, the rates at Kingsland seemed about $20 a night cheaper.

We stopped in Kingsland this past August and will definitely do it again when we travel in the future. Rooms were inexpensive and clean. Also, there was an italian restaurant right behind a gas station that had great food!

Angelos...next to Chic fil A...??
