No, you can chose to use your placeholder to book a cruise, or just book one, saving the placeholder for another future cruise (remember that placeholder/cruise must begin by 24 months from the day you put down the placeholder payment).

OK, sorry, I mis-read your question. I thought you were asking if you had to use the placeholder, if you had one. As to whether you must do so directly with DCL, I'm not sure. Maybe someone else who's done it will chime in whether they booked direct or used a TA.

If the WDW TA UK phone people are anything like the typical WDW phone handlers, you might get a different answer by calling again and talking to a different one.

I think it could very well be that you need to book through the US DCL website. As far as I understand the Walt Disney Travel Company in the UK is a separate company that sells Disney travel to UK residents (and other Europeans), but they are nothing else than a travel agent themselves. Also, since your placeholder is a booking that has been started in USD and as far as I know booking through the WDTC are in GBP, how would they deal with that? However, booking with DCL direct is easy!

The reason I asked is cos I wanted to change a resort stay to a cruise which they will do for free however if I cancel the booking and re book with dcl I lose my deposit I paid.

The placeholder you have booked would give you $100 onboard credit on the cruise so its whether the cancellation fee is more than £70 I would say then it would save money. The placeholder is however valid for 24 months from the date purchased so you may be able to use it for a later date perhaps?

As others have said the UK Disney site is actually a more like a travel agent than Disney itself so works differently to the US disney site.

Ok....I'm in the US and bookings are different. In the US you can't transfer a WDW resort deposit to a cruise. You have to cancel your resort reservation through WDTC then book a cruise through DCL. As long as the resort cancellation is done within the required time, we get our deposits and any other monies paid refunded. Maybe the UK forum could be of more help?

To be honest in the US you are lucky by the fact if you cancel and give some notice you normally get your money back. Here in the uk they just rip you off and keep your deposit if you cancel even if it's a year out. And even when you make a change its like £50 just to change hotel and stuff. Crazy

What you have currently, by the sound of it, is not a placeholder. It is a package stay, booked through WDTC, for a combined WDW/cruise trip. If you had booked a placeholder, direct with DCL on a previous cruise, you would be able to use that placeholder to book either directly with DCL or transfer to a TA who could book for you. if you cancelled, you would get that amount refunded as per Ts&Cs of DCL. Having booked with WDTC, who are a travel agent pure and simple, you are subject to their Ts&Cs. They are not ripping you off, merely imposing the policies laid out when you book.

As a UK resident, you are perfectly able (and entitled) to book direct with WDW and will be usbject to the same Ts&Cs as the US residents and others who book direct.

It is official Disney its just how the UK works its seperate companies. Means its like booking Thomas cook holiday and moving to Thompson (does that even exist anymore). Crazy I know but its a bit of a pain when it comes to things like this. This is why I rarely book through the UK site as I find the T&Cs in the US one are so much better for things like changes and cancellations.

I like the UK tickets though and am happy that I can book those from Germany as well!

Very true! I often do the Disney part with the US site then buy UK tickets as definitely a better value option!
