Well- another saga in my life.... We had rented an RV through 1-800-4rent RV to come and stay at the campground for the first time with another family who owns their RV. We got a call the day before yesterday and was told that all the rentals had been called out by FEMA and Red Cross for the hurricane relief. Our ressies are no good that we had had for months and because it is this late of notice, all the cabins are sold out, which means we have no where to stay now.
Don't get me wrong, I feel for the folks that have been affected by this disaster, in fact, last night, I volunteered at the local high school for the evacuees that are in our area. This is just going to be such a blow for my DD- it is her birthday and we are going with friends whose child is my DD's favorite person around. We had ressies at Emeril's for my DH's birthday (a surprise), etc. Just needed to vent- I am so disappointed and have no other options right now.

Okay, can you drive to Orlando and rent an rv there? Can you stay in the other family's rv? Can you tent?

I'd try anything to keep from missing a FW trip!!

What are the dates you are going to be there? Maybe you can keep trying for a cabin, people cancel all the time. Also, have you tried another resort? As long as your friends have their camper at Ft. W, you can get a parking pass and enjoy everything else. The only difference is you would have to drive to your hotel. I realize that is a big difference to us campers, but like Campingcorgi said, anything to keep from enjoying FW. Good luck and keep us posted.

I would still go, just bring a tent. I actually tented at FW on our honeymoon, it was before we owned our own camper. It was still a magical disney trip. If your friends have their own camper then you could still use their amenities. The comfort stations are great. Another option would be to borrow a camper from a friend or family member. I'm sure that someone you know has one even if it only a pop up it would be worth it.

have already been proposed here -- personally, the first thought that entered my mind was checking the availability of tent sites and if that worked out, pitching a nice 2 or 3 room tent. Plenty of room (sounds like there's just the three of you in your family) & You'll still be @ FW with your friends in the RV. It sounds like you've been planning this trip for a long time & it would be a shame to have to cancel at this late date.
Hope it all works out.

We looked into renting an RV in Orlando but
#1- we would have to rent a van to pull our golf cart and to pack all of the things that we would need to camp, rent the RV, transfer the requirements, then settle in- this would take our 1st day and our last day to load and unload everything.
#2- the rental place for RV's are not open on Sunday, making us leave a day early- because to do all that is required - it would make no sense to try and find a hotel because Saturday would be shot from taking the RV back and trying to pack up and move, just to get up and drive home Sunday morning.

As far as tenting, I am just not that rustic! It really takes a lot for me not to have all the comforts of home but I agreed to do this because my DD loves outdoors, our friends are going in their RV and I know that means a lot to both of them. The father of the family going and my DH are just great friends and really enjoy each other quite a bit. My DH goes to WDW for me, not because he particularly enjoys it!
This is just the most complicated thing we have tried to do and it is all falling in around us.
I had suggested trying for another hotel in WDW that wasn't as expensive as WL and he said that if he couldn't do what we had planned, it just wasn't worth it.
We had decided to just hang around the campground, cook, and enjoy each others families hitting the parks here and there.
Does anyone know of a website that private parties rent out RV's? There was an ad in our local paper of a private party renting their RV but they wanted long term, not just a week.
Thanks for thinking of my family and hopefully we will find something.
I plan to call daily about the cabins just in case someone does cancel.

Carrie-
We will arrive Monday,Oct 10 and depart Sunday, Oct 16.

I will cross my fingers and I need Pixie Dust to surround me!!

You might want to check out the WL. Since it's adjacent to FW you'll be close to your friends. There is a trail between WL & FW that you can walk, or ride a bike. If you don't have your golf cart, maybe you would want to bike between the two. Of course there are always the boats between FW & WL. ...Hmmm....do I dare say...everyone could pool hop between FW & WL, as well as enjoy each others amenities! :rotfl2:

callahanjulie10, I am so sorry! The dates that I have reserved are Oct 1-10th! My parents are coming with us and I booked a cabin for them. My mom has already booked at POP to save money. I thought I might suprise her and change her to a cabin (and pay for it). I would have gave it up for you, though, because they don't really need it. Have you tried booking online? I had no problem booking this cabin online.

Good luck and I hope something works out for you.

Maybe try the Orlando (and surrounding areas) chambers of commerce? They could probably point you in the right direction for local RV rentals. Good luck!

I just checked online and cabins are available for your dates. You can probable rent a golf cart cheaper at FW than the cost of a rental van and extra gas cost to bring your own. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Callahanjulie, we're all thinking about you! This morning I also checked cabin availability. It looks like you're in luck!

I am checking as I write this, I had called yesterday and the day before and was told there was no availablity. I am crossing my fingers...and will get back when something is set in stone!

I called and was told there was still nothing, so I went online and checked - nothing....
where are you all checking?

Callahanjulie10 are you calling or using the internet. If you use the internet we have check about every 15min it took about a day 1/2 but we got the reservation.

Oh no,
I hope you get to go. We will be there 10th- 15th of October. How old is your daughter? I have 2 one is 10 and the other 6. Plus a ds 7.
Good luck. Maybe our kids will meet at the campfire.

I just tried on line and they had availiblilty. Oct. 10 to Oct. 16. :confused3

Are you checking on line as a florida resident, that could be your problem that all florida resident rates are gone, it does show availability under the regular rates.

Update:

I called and called and called and I GOT A CABIN!!!!! The pixie dust must be thick around here :cool1:
Anyway- everything has worked out for the best.
We have a cabin now, we are taking my parents truck with the golf cart on a trailer, and my neighbor is going to keep my dog for us!
Today has been a wonderful Monday after a horrible weekend.
Thanks for all your suggestions, thoughts, wishes, and pixie dust sent my way. :sunny:
