Pittsburgh

Update on our trip:

Friday was kind of a wash (literally). Right after we checked into our room it started to storm. This was a serious storm that was in no hurry to end. Not knowing Pittsburgh weather, we were concerned it would start again, so we decided to cancel our previous plan to go to the suggested German restaurant & stay in the area of our hotel. That happened to be East Liberty. It did rain again, so I suppose that was a good idea. We wandered around the area, had dinner & stopped at a couple bars.

Saturday, we drove to The Strip District, with the intention of having a late breakfast/early lunch at Primanti. By the time we parked way too far from the restaurant & walked there, we encountered a long line. We decided we probably didn't have time to wait, because we had a tour to get to. We're nothing, if not adaptable, so we grabbed lunch from a food truck in the parking lot where we had paid $8 to walked to Primanti & back. It ended up being a good choice. The tacos were good. The street corn was delicious. (Spoiler alert: It was much better than the Primanti sandwich we had later.)

From there, we went on the Hop-on Hop-off bus, drove around Penn State to get a close up view of the basketball stadium & drove by all the pro stadiums. (Sports stadiums are kind of our thing.) The tour bus had driven by the incline. I couldn't help but notice the steps to the loading area. Steps are not my friend. I have mobility issues & didn't want to deal with parking, then possibly not be able to find an elevator to access the loading area. We decided to drive to the top of Mount Washington instead. After enjoying the view, we were ready to go back & chill.

I made a reservation at Paris 66 in East Liberty. Before dinner, we decided to try a different bar. Finally, good drinks. We were beginning to think they didn't exist in Pittsburgh. :p Dinner was excellent. They had the best foie gras we've ever eaten. Not wanting to press our luck, we returned to the same bar, after dinner.

Sunday was checkout day, which came way too soon. First stop was the science center, where we took our first tour of a submarine. I couldn't buy tickets online & assumed they were sold out. So, we arrived early hoping for two of the limited walkup tickets they mention online. It turned out we had no problem getting tickets. When DH took out his wallet to pay for them, he was informed the museum was free that day. Score! Obviously, that was the reason I I couldn't buy tickets online. (I don't know if this is the case every Sunday or if it's just a first Sunday of the month thing.) From there, we went back to The Strip District to actually look around & finally get a Primanti's sandwich. On the way back to State College, we drove by Randyland, then drive through Little Italy, which has some beautiful architecture, but appeared to have very limited Italian presence.

Thanks again to all of you who offered suggestions. We didn't have time to do nearly as much as we wanted, but we had a great time. Hopefully, we'll be able to return at some point to do some of the things we missed.
