I must admit that yesterday I could be found at one of the Mouse's many competitors, located here in NJ. While watching their dolphin show last night I was quite surprised to hear the music for "The Pirates of the Carribean" (Yo Ho - A Pirate's Life for Me) played twice during the show. So, as the title of this thread states, who owns the rights to the music? I would be surprised if it is public domain. It would be quite interesting to find out whether Six Flags is paying royalties to Disney or that they should be & aren't (especially after hearing all of the Disney bashing I heard at the park!)

Although anyone can play the recording, if its used as part of a public performance, there must be copyright fees paid the publisher and the performer(s) on the recording (that's two different kinds of copyright.)

In most big corporations that use music, there is a dept. (at least one person) that "clears" (pays the fees for) all of the music used in public performances.

While it is quite possible that they are just using the track and "hope nobody finds out"... I have a notion that the music (all the music) has been legally cleared for their use.

That's very true. I'm sure Six Flags has a department that covers all the royalties that need to be paid. It's just like commercials who "borrow" music from entertainers to use as a product's theme. Or even TV shows like Golden Girls who used "Thank You for Being a Friend" as that show's theme. Royalties were paid to the writers.
