Pirates Birthday Party Ideas

My almost 8 yo daughter wants a pirate birthday party. We sent out invitations that read "Aaarrr!

Come if ye dare to celebrate Pirate Princess Haley's 8th year. She needs shipmates to swab the deck and look for lost pirate treasure. A sailor's lunch and cake will be there for ye pleasure. We set sail on the 16th day of June at 4 in the afternoon. Appropriate sailors attire for ye, or its the plank! All pirates must stick to the code. Pier located at our address

Now I need some creative ideas to follow through with that won't cost as much as our trip to DL.

And we all know some of you guys can get VERY creative. So lets have fun with this!

We had pictures of ds6 and our group of 14's pirate picture from the cruise blown up into posters at Staples. Get some POC posters. REally inexpensive decorations at Oriental Trading.

Costco now has a huge set of POC paper goods (where was this last year when I needed it?).

We bought a POC pinata. We have a pool so the kids aren't looking for too much entertainment.

What we did the year before (spiderman) was put down a tarp (I do this for the pinata to have clean candy) and give each kids a can of silly string and let them go to town.

At OT I ordered beads, coins and other misc. pirate things and decorated the tables with them. Also you can get great goody bag fodder there.

A quick thought. I read (& googled up) a story about FEMALE pirates in the 1700s. Very cool story.

Their names were Anne Bonny & Mary Read (who disguised herself to look like a male pirate).

oh & btw....our 24 y/o daughter is ALSO named (& spelled) Haley.

How about a treasure hunt in your backyard to some buried treasure (goody bags). Also, I made a pirate scare crow and had each kid and my son pose for a picture by it. Then the kids decorated inexpensive framing mats with jewels and sequins. I also glued magnets on the back so they could go on the fridge. At the party's end, I gave them each their picture to go in their decorated frame. For the centerpiece on the table, I covered a shoe box with black paper and filled it with foil wrapped coins, Hershey's kisses, and lots of shiny confetti, mardi gras beads, etc.

My son last year had a party and I had all the boys make the treasure chest cake. They frosted it with a plastic knife, put the candy in it, and they were very cute for 5 year olds. Girls could be a lot more creative. We also did a treasure hunt in the house (since it was August in Arizona), and then had them hunt for candy.
