Pinky Promise - no more DVC

We bought 80 direct points at AKV last year, finally able to afford and prioritize DVC. The plan was to then buy 100-160 more points via resale this year.

Well, addon-itis happened.

We put in an offer for 165 more AKV points via resale (in ROFR now). And now we just bought 25 more points direct (to allow occasional stays at Riviera and Reflections.

I told my wife that I promise this is the last of DVC for me, and that this can count as my “mid-life” crisis (I’m turning 33 this week). Though I think it’s more dream fulfillment.

But then my 4yo said we needed to pinky promise. And you can never break a pinky promise. So I pinky promised my wife and daughter that, after we get a resale contract, no more DVC points ever.

My daughter has already reminded me twice this morning “No more DVCs!” 😭😭😭

Looks like 270 points is where we are landing, if this particular resale goes through. Well above my original plan. 😂

never box yourself in like that! You should have had some sort of qualifier on that promise!

my wife is ready to kill me already. Years dreaming of DVC then from nothing to 270 points in less than a 12 month period.

I have a very addictive personality so I need limits. I don’t need to catch em all! All the will power I could muster kept me from adding any contracts that weren’t AKV June UY.

so many attractive non-June UYs, and BLT and Riviera are so my speed...!

I love AKV but it’s her absolute favorite. A key driver in my success here. 😂

your story is similar to mine.

I talked DW into 150 at VGF. 1 month later, after planning out all the trips for the next three years, I realized we'd need more points...so I bought another 130 points (I thought DW had agreed to this -- but either she forgot, or I imagined I had gotten permission). In my defense, I did get VGF points for $123 pp (in 2016), so I can't really say I'm sorry I did it.

And then -- right after the first 150 contract closed...I realized that we'd be better off getting APs -- so we should probably buy the minimum direct to get the AP discount (25 points at the time and it gave you $250 savings). So I added on 25 points at BCV for F&W trips.

So we started with 150 -- and within a couple months were at 305.

After 2 years -- I quickly realized that 25 at BCV wasn't enough -- so I added another 25 to bring it up to 50 total. Now at 330 total (280 VGF and 50 BCV)

Then my parents joined DVC with 200 at BWV (I'm also on the deed)...then my parents got addon-itis...and so we went in together for 250 points at RIV (they got 100 and we got 150). DW was NOT happy about that one...so I was forced to sell some stock holdings to cover the cost.

So now we are at 480 (280 VGF -- 50 BCV -- 150 RIV).

I'm pretty sure I'm done...but I ain't pinky swearing to nothing!

It's not a broken promise if your DW and daughter voluntarily release you from the pledge.

I find the carrot (it's so much more magical to stay onsite!) and stick (but we don't have enough points, that's why I booked all of us into a single Poly studio) approach effective.

hah! I will keep that in mind. But I predict some strong side eye from my wife on that one...

Short term pain is worth it for the cause. In our case, the contracts I bought were all double/triple loaded. It was very tempting to splurge. But I rented out the points and booked a studio for 2A, 2C, and 2 infants!

After that DH was completely on board: "how many more points do we need to buy so that never happens again?"

I bought 120 direct initial and ended up at 400 6 months later with resale add ons. The struggle is real, but worth it

75 direct in September, and if the next 2 resales pass ROTF, I'll be up to 885 in 5 months (BLT/SSR/PVB). I work crazy long hours so I need something to look forward to! I think I have all that I need for Orlando (at least until I see the next great deal on Fidelity)....but as I live in San Diego, I'm debating whether or not to buy a VGC resale, or possibly wait and buy direct at the new property (if that ever happens).

I'm in a similar place debating buying VGC or waiting. If I see a smaller 50-100 point VGC that matches my use year my thinking is to grab that and then do some more direct if the new property ends up being built. The location of VGC can't be beat and it isn't worth paying that much for cash stays for me. Always stay offsite at land.

BUMMER - You're going to regret that Pinky Promise!
My first mid-life crisis was age 40 (Car), then I had another at 45 (Nicer Car & with European Delivery), and the DVC purchase was closer to age 50 !
I guess, with many more people living to 100, I could count that as my last mid-life crisis !!??
We've added on once already, and are considering adding more. Only regrets are we did not buy more points sooner.
ET:)
