Pin Trading Info??? Is it usually CMs or kids?

Wow :flower: That was like a mini crash course in pin-trading!

My girls love to trade, and if they have pins they definitely don't want to trade we leave them at home. They have a MVMCP pin from 2001 and a CM gave them a goofy pin from Japan and told my daughter not to trade it because it had value. They also have their faves that they just want to keep. All in all, especially for the kids its fun. They like to trade in World Showcase because they get to talk to CM's from other countries and ask them questions about where they live :)

Goodness...I just realized I almost took up a whole page.

I apologize if that is not correct board etiquette!

Leave my favorite pins at home?! I don't think so! It is bad enough the kitties have to go to the spa for a week!

I ALWAYS take my miniature Fantasia Mushroom....my Dormouse in the Teapot....my Piglet on the peach (Duh...from Georgia you know)....Mrs. Potts and Chip....my little Tree of Life...Cast Lanyard of the 2 Siamese Cats and the one of Nala....my small Lumiere and Cogsworth....and one my brother found for me...it is from a Disney Cruise...it is a teeny tiny Skippers cap with Mouse ears...since we love to eat at Yachstman Steakhouse it is appropriate!

There has been some pretty good advice so far... but a little to add

check out Scoops 1' o clock pin talk - it's in magic kingdom (occasionally they don't run - so please check at city hall)

think its sundays - wednesdays ask at city hall for location cos i cant remember.
but don't arrive too late.

Scoop sanderson will introduce you to the world of pin trading, and explain some of the details like how pins are made, and play some games and stuff like that

plus you can also check out

Pipics - Disney Database of pins

plus this is a web site for pin traders (nice ones :) )
I have always found them really friendly and helpful it is a great place to ask specific pin related questions

Dizpins - Disney pin news & boards

They also show upcoming / released pins from all the parks,
event details / pins and lots of other info.

Oh and most importantly -

Have Fun!

Just put a note in my pda to ask about the pin talk...thanks!

Okay, all you experts - one other strange post 9/11 question...I read that the pins may or may not be considered a weapon for those of us that are flying to WDW.

What's up with that? Apparently the sharp backing is long enough to be considered a "blade." I thought that was kind of funny. How on earth would you threaten someone with a tinkerbell pin?

Okay, whatever...better safe than sorry.

Which brings me to my question...Has anybody had the airline make them leave their pins behind or require that the pins be checked baggage only? We were going to do carry-on only.

Anybody have a problem with this FAA rule at the airport? (if you have a mental problem with it, thats okay too, but I need to know if the FAA security peeps will actaully seize my pins or make me check them).

:flower: No, I think your posts were very informative! I learned some things I didn't know, now I can pass it on to my dd's... :flower:

I have not heard of anyone having problems with the pins on carry ons. Can you see them making all those businessmen remove their tie tacks?

I am ready to go now....have looked over all my trading pins and the ones I just can't leave at home....only 120 days to go!

Momimouse...notice you only have 7 days...hope you took notes! Let us know how you did! My brother turned into a "lanyard vulture"...he is so funny...he is about 6"4' and 200 lbs...but runs around like a kid....and he didn't want to do the whole thing...now he is the biggest one of all!

Meezer....
you talked about a CSM at DTD who has a special trading session. Do you know if it is done at the same time every day?
Thanks for all of the GREAT info-I am learning soooo much!!!!

I have a strange question...

We are getting ready to leave in a week
and I got some pins for my DS6 to trade and he has never done this before (and nor have I).

I am wondering as I had read in the previous post that the CM gets to choose a pin from my DS's lanyard after DS chooses one from the CM. Is it possible that my DS can offer one of his traders instead of letting the CM choose? (I know that the CM in order to trade can not have two of the same pins on his lanyard). Does this make sense?

Basically I know DS might not want to trade if the CMs keep getting the pins that my DS wants to keep... I know that that is part of the "trading" for adults and didn't know if they make an acception for the children.

Thanks for your insight! :earsboy:

A few years back we were at the MK for the Christmas Party and we became friendly with a gentleman that was watching the fireworks with us. He was VERY friendly and began talking to my family and I. It turned out that he was a Disney Exec. from the West Coast there on business and was staying at our hotel. He noticed that my children had a few pins on their lanyards and asked what we thought about them. I told him they were a pretty expensive habit ;) He laughed and said that Disney tends to be. We took the mono rail together back to the hotel and when we arrived he asked us to stop by his room, he would like to give the children some souveniers. He gave both of my kids 25 of the same Disney pins. He told us that all they have to do is put 1 pin on the lanyards at a time and trade with the CM's for different ones. I was amazed :earseek: He was a really nice fella (Keeping his name secret) and we had breakfast and dinner a few days after. It was funny to watch the other CM's snap to when he was around but he never came off bossy. Anyway, He also pointed out that the color of the CM's lanyard means if they trade with adults and children or children only. I think a green lanyard means they trade with children only. Good Luck

I wish I could remember that guys name and the time...I wonder what would happen if we called the World of Disney Store and asked?

I wonder if a web administrator placed your request on the CM's board. I bet you'd get the answer.

By the way, I just realized, the pins were these plain pins from an opening on the west coast. It was a project he worked on and gave them out to his CM's and had these left over and wanted to give them away and I guess this was the easiest way. My original post sounded shady. :flower:

Free weekend minutes rock! Found the phone number on AllEars.

Called and spoke to Steve at the Downtown Disney Store.

There is a different cast member each time but at 2:30pm and 6:30pm EVERY day they trade! Steve suggests you get there about 1/2 hour early.

Be warned...there are also the dreaded pin vultures in the area....just so you know...it is illegal to SELL pins! and be careful with these guys what you trade...they usually want something you don't want to trade.

But...the guy inside the Disney Store is a CM and totally good to go!

Meezers, thank you for the pin trading 101 class! I am so grateful! Now I will have to check out the pinpics.com and the dizpins.com sites. So is there a good place to buy a starter set? Like is the Disney Pin store a good place to start? Are there any eBay pin buying tips you pros can give me? I am pretty eBay savvy but when it come to Disney pins I haven't a clue what to look for.
For instance, I don't want to buy pins for my dd if they aren't going to be wanted in a trade, KWIM? Her feelings would be hurt if someone said oh that's a crappy pin I don't want any of those! :o

thanks for any info!

If you trade with CM's, you will never get a response like that. My daughter has never had a CM turn her down. She has traded from starter sets and even a free one we got from Magical Express. CM's don't really care what they get . . . they are there for the fun of it for the guests. They will wind up trading it again anyway. In fact, they are not supposed to really take a trade if they already have the pin you want to give them. They did it anyway because my DD only had one trade left from her starter set. They don't really have a vested interest in keeping any sort of pin. That is what they are there to do - trade - crappy pins or not!
