Pin Storage

Hi! I have bought many pins on my previous WDW vacations but I really haven't done anything with them. How do you store your pins? Also, do you keep them in the original package or do you take them out of the package?

I think that I have finally gotten up the courage to try pin trading on my October trip. I have bought some pins on EBAY and on mousepinsonline. Do any of you have any tips for me?

Thanks everyone!

OK, I'm not exactly a veteran, but here are my 2 cents. :)

Most of my pins come right out of the package. I'm thinking of taking the few I still have in package out, but am not sure yet. The only things in a package right now are the single jumbo pin I have and a couple of sets.

Once I had a bunch, I found that the pin pages they sell at Disney were the easiest way to store them. I have switched to plain old 3" 3-ring binders instead of the Disney binders, though. Much cheaper and you can find some that have removable labels on the spine, so you know what's in each book without getting it out - a BIG plus once you get beyond a book or two. I have 6 pages per binder, but could maybe fit one or two more in each????

As far as trading, the 'rules' mostly boil down to being polite. Start trading with cast members (except for the ones with green lanyards - they can trade only with kids) and know that it is not impolite to tell someone(non-CM) who approaches you for a trade that you don't want to - it happens that they may not have a pin you want on their lanyard. If the pins you have are Sedesma or Propins or some other 'non-official' pin, you will likely find them to be less desireable, but I think the CMs will trade for them now, unless the rules have changed again.

Try to make the pin talk Scoop Sanderson gives in the MK a few times a week. He should be able to answer any questions you have and will lay out all the basics for you.

Trade for fun, trade for pins you like, and you can't go too far wrong. :-)

Pezpam, those are great suggestions! Thanks!

Does anyone else have some recommendations?

I bought a big black shadow box, so I can display all or most of my Lilo & Stitch pins that I have and I am going to form them into a gaint "Mickey Mouse" head. I am plan on doing this after we get back from our WDW trip this Dec., that way it will give me something to do during the winter time and I can also add the new pins that I get on that trip to it as well.

I also have a pin bag, that I bought from the Disney Store( when they had a ton of pins) and have a lot of my pins in there as well. In fact this trip to WDW I will need to buy another pin bag!

I second the shadow box idea. I picked up a black wood framed one at Target. The pins are so cute that it's a shame not to display them. I keep it on a three tiered corner stand. It's a nice way to be able to see them w/out overdoing the Disney decor!

Here's how DD shows hers .It's a banner that hung in the parks

That is beautiful! Thanks for the great idea. Where did you get the banner, was it for sale online? I would LOVE to have a Tink banner for DD to display her pins too. Your DD has a big collection. We are just beginning, and have about 77 pins (last count). That has taken some time to acquire--so we are slow-going. They are expensive, as we buy many of the ones we want-and they all seem to be $10-12 or more! I always thought they were all the same price ($6.95), but found that notion to be false. :rotfl: We still love collecting. We just set a limit, and buy what we can with the amount we have set aside. :confused3

*We are beginning to realize we can actually "trade" for some of the pins and save a bundle. We saw many $10.95 pins on CM's this last visit, and traded them for pins we only paid $3.00 for! This is the true way to go--and will get us a lot more pins than simply buying them. I was shocked to see these expensive pins on the cm's lanyards--but also excited. One cm had an ear-piece and looked like a secret-service person. He had several of the ones we wanted to buy @ $10-12, and he traded two with me, and four with the kids! We were on cloud nine! :cloud9:

I show off my pins in a couple of different ways. I do have a pin bag, but I have created a quilt hanging where I show off the pins I have. I have used Commercial grade velcro (found at Joannes) along the top of my entertainment center/room divider, and sewn to the top of the quilt to hold the quilt up.

I'd post a picture but since I'm new, Dis won't let me put in a link to my photobucket pictures. Anyway, it looks great and lets me show off my favorite pins without having to bring out the pin bag all of the time. e-mail me for the link if you would like to see the pictures of the quilt hanging - not great pictures but will give you an idea.

I have a friend that displays his pins on towels hanging from pants hangers (the kind with clips)

Of course the framed pins with the autographed drawings are spread througout the house on the walls.

We bought this one and a 6ft purple one from E-bay.

DD has been collecting for about 4 years and we just started to do the trading last year. We also buy up nice pin lots from E-bay and keep some and use some just for trading.I have about 40 pins under my bed right now for her to use on our next 2 trips .I try not to pat over the $3 unless it's something special in the lot I will go a bit higher.

If you click on the TINK ROOM in my sig you can see some of the other stuff she collects.

Thank you for the reply. Is there a specific "Disney" site on eBay? I would love to purchase something like this (real park item). I do not mean to be rude, but was it expensive?

Your pin-trading advice is great. I need to buy some cheap Disney pins (I also try to stay between the $2-3 price range) for us to trade. I would love to bring 40 pins, but even at $3 each, that's about $120! Maybe if I buy them slowly over time, it will not seem like so much money. :confused3

When you buy a Disney pin "lot" from Ebay, how do you check the authenticity before you purchase? I have seen some good deals, but am scared they will be fake--and I will not know until I go to trade with a CM and he/she tells me they can not trade with me for that reason. That is my biggest fear about buying on Ebay. Any help is welcomed. :wizard:

I bought it from a seller called Sellandship . Mousesurplus also has resort and park stuff all the time.

Those 40 are for our next 3 trips I just got some good deals so I'm ahead of the game. I have also been picking them up here or there since we got back in June with some of our leftover money. DD gets 2 pins on arrival day and a new one to either trade or keep each day after that.

I look for lots that have DVC,AP members pins and CM lanyard pins in them only with the other pins . Most likely it's just someone tring to cut down on what they have .here's a sample of the lots I pick up I tend to stay away from the everyday sellers.

Here are a few I have framed.

I hope these help.
I keep my traders in pokemon trading card books and the pins pendig framing or uncompleted collections on cork boards on the wall.

We use a corkboard. We used to have a cork strip hanging above the doors in the Family Room, but we had too many pins, and...
CRASH! It plummeted to the floor. Those little things are heavy. So we decided to use a regular old corkboard. They all have a little gold outline, so it stands out on the board.

I used to have my pins in binders but then I couldn't really enjoy them so I built this table

The drawers are lined with corkboard covered in velvet. Each drawer is approximately 40 inches square. I can stack 2 sets of pins per drawer to allow me to change the display when I get tired of seeing one set of pins. It also brings up very interesting conversations when people come over to visit.

Now that is AWESOME!!!! :thumbsup2 How long did that take for you to make? It really makes for a pretty cool little table!

It took me a couple of weekends to make the table and about 3 months for the stain to wear off my hands. I ran out of gloves and thought I would be careful but that didn't work too well.

Hey there, AZ Jazzy J, how are you? Does your DD still collect pins? How is she doing these days?

I think you could have a second career building really cool pin-collecting furniture...I am not kidding, I am *serious*. That table is fantastic! I don't know if I could afford it, but I still want one.

agnes!
