I don't collect but, thought it would be something fun to get my grandkids started on. So, this year for their birthdays, I purchased a blue jean Disney backpack & a handful of pins. They loved them....and the oldest (12yr) started trading with friends right away.

The question I have........is there a trick to what type of material you put the pins on? or how to attach the rubber backing piece?
The pins don't stay on this backpack very well. I'm assuming the material is too thick.

The backpacks are so cute but, they are losing pins when using it. What is the secret???

TIA

Generally speaking when you see people with pins on backpacks or jackets or hats, they don't trade those pins. They are just for show. The pins are held secure by a special type of metal pin back which is locked into position. I bought a packet in one of the shops in Disneyland in 2019.

You use the key to tighten the pin back.

For trading pins, people usually keep these on a lanyard. When I do pin trading in the parks, I usually have my trading pin lanyard in my bag. Sometimes I don't even use the lanyard and just keep the trading pins in a small plastic baggie.

OMG....didn't know about these. That's why I needed to come here to ask. THANKS!!!
I took the 12 yr old last week to DW and I did buy her a lanyard to wear w/pins. But, the backpack is too cute to not use. I will order some of these metal backings.........I knew there must be something I was missing.

Again...THANKS!!!

Amazon sells locking pin backs, too. There are backs which don't require a key and some which do. Both styles work well. You can get bags of the locking backs (100?) for a very reasonable price. I use them with any pin that has a back pin similar to the Disney pins. No more lost pins now!

Some people think it's better to get the butterfly clasp back, rather than the locking back. Sometimes, the locking back causes issues with the back of the pin itself (breaks, etc.)

Others use this type of locking back that doesn't require the tiny Allen wrench:
