OK so there's a kiosk in the mall that sells "pillow pets" - they have a sign on the side of their kiosk that has the logo and everything. I come home and look on the pillow pets website to see how much they are going for there... come to find out hers is FAKE!!!!!!!

We got the purple unicorn and it has a shiney silver horn. Well the one on the website has a pink horn, not shiney. FAKE FAKE FAKE!!!

I am LIVID! There is a sign that says no refunds, only exchanges with receipt. I didn't think anything of it, I just figured that they didn't want to deal with returns because of health reasons (being something that kids sleep on :confused3)

What would you do? I'm going back to the mall anyways tomorrow so I was thinking I could go up to the guy, ask him quietly to refund my money, and when/if he refuses I'll start talking about it being a fake... I mean he's clearly an imposter especially with the fake sign on the side of the kiosk!!!

Tricky Tricky Tricky!

So, what would YOU do??

(and I know, I know, buyer beware! But i had no idea there were fakes out there, and like I said, the sign looks like it came right off the pillow pets website!!!)

Report the seller to the BBB and to the company that makes the authentic pillow pets. I believe if he's using info and pics off the website of the original company-that it's fraud and trademark theft/infringement. Take a digital camera or camera phone to record and get pics to back up your story if you do end up making a complaint.

I would definitely expect my money back if he's advertising them as authentic pillow pets.

Shouldn't the animal have some kind of tag to say it is the pillow pets? I would definetly email the website. Fakes being out there doesn't surprise me though. I mean look at all the different names of silly bandz out there. I would be mad if they were using a sign from the real company to sell fakes!

Report it to your state's atty general as well.

I would contact the company that makes the real Pillow Pets and tell them about it. Send them a picture of the fake or send them the fake. Tell them where you purchased it. I'm willing to bet they would be very happy to know about this so they can stop it.

I know what booth ypur talking about. I was there a few months back and was looking at them and noticed that the tag didn't say pillow pets...

Sorry you have to go through with this.

I got two the other day for my twins. (birthday presents) I knew they were fakes. It is still a pilow and a pet, so they will be happy. :lovestruc That is all that matters to me.

Along with BBB and your state Attorney General I'd also report him to mall management .. If they're on top of their game they will not want a fraud as one of their vendors.

there is another thread on pillow pets on the budget boards. I have been search for these pillow pets. my bj's or walgreens does not carry them. so i did some research online and found this article from pillowpetspromocodes.com

How To Spot A Fake Pillow Pets Pillow
1. The easiest way is to look at the tag or label on the pillow. If the tag says anything other than “Pillow Pets” it is a fake. However you can’t do that if you are buying online.

2. If a website has any other name for the product other than Pillow Pets it is a fake. I am not a lawyer just a mom who wants to help. So I won’t name brands that are fake. Just be aware there is only one authentic product and several fakes.

3. To make sure you are not getting a fake pillow pets pillow made in China by some child sweatshop factory buy your Pillow Pet from their official website.

4. Pillow Pets does not sell their product in Walmart, department stores, Malls or Kiosks.

5. Pillow Pets never offers a promo code. Only the knock-offs offer promo codes.

6. Fake Pillow Pets look cheap! Because they are cheaply made

if you go to their website the first pillow is 19.95 shipping 6.95 second pillow 15.95 shipping 5.95 so all said and done two pillow pet 48.90 for the real thing. not too bad. better than buying one for $30.00 at the mall.

I posted on that thread and never went back to it :headache:...

so I just called the pillow pet company and told them about the kiosk, and the fact that they used their sign. I told the guy that I was going to call the BBB, the state AG and also report them to the mall office. He said that millions of complaints have been met and there's really nothing that can be done about it other than educating people about how to spot a fake. *sigh* I talked to dh and he said that it is good quality fake, and it's up to me whether I want to upset dd and take it back and order a real one online... I have to think about it.

Thanks for the input everyone!

This thread was just in time for me! Thank you for posting... i am about to get 2 tomorrow - thanks again. I will be keenly on the lookout for fakes!!

I purchased a Bee Pillow Pet from Target yesterday...off to look at the tag...It's the real thing. Pillow Pet as seen on TV.

how long have these things been out? they look kinda cheap.

in 2008 i bought my kids two of these pillows - like the same design. they have held up well and are SUPER cute - two tigers from our university bookstore (i was in dire needs of a suvenior to take back home). they are more detailed than the ones on the website and are by a different brand.

its not important if its THE pillow pet, but if its a product your kids are happy with.

Well.... yes and no. If you are buying a product that you think is a real pillow pet and it is marketed and sold as a real pillow pet then you probably have no recourse if it's defective as you usually have no way to contact the manufacturer. Most companies that sell counterfiet products don't have customer service departments as they are fly by night companies that disappear as quickly as they appear. Plus, many many counterfeit products are made in a shoddy manner that means they won't hold up and some are so shoddy that they are not safe for little ones to use.

IMO - Countefeits (which is what it sounds like the OP bought) are different from items that are sold as "similar to" products - in that knock-offs are marketed with a similar but different name, and you know it's not a "real" pillow pet, but it's cheaper and what your kid wants and it does the job. Usually the companies that market knock-offs will have customer service and a slightly better product than a counterfeit product.

We are way behind on fads here, apparently! I had no idea what a pillow pet was, I just looked it up. My kids don't know what they are either, and I think I will keep it that way, those are expensive!!

DITTO!! Fortunately DD16 is past this craze, but we had our share...

I just purchased a 'similar to pillow pet' at Animal Kingdom. My kids ran over to the booth excited about the pillow pets. I had never heard of them, but the girls said they always see the tv ads. Anyway, I bought a jungle pet one for my DD for a bit more then pillow pets cost. It was at a park, after all. My girls said they didn't know pillow pets had jungle animals and that they don't show those in the ads. After seeing this post, I checked the website and .. they aren't even pillow pets. It is cute and soft, though, and my DD loves it. So, if you see them in Animal Kingdom you know what you are getting.. It is made by fiestatoys.

Hmm I think I'd be more willing to wage a battle against the mall kiosk if it sounded like the pillow pet folks were really trying to go after companies selling knock-offs; but from the conversation you had, I'm not so sure. Although the guy you talked with was probably not from the legal department. ;)

Since you were able to inspect your purchase before buying, I assume you were comfortable with the quality. So if your DD loves her new unicorn, does it really matter if the horn is silver instead of pink?

Good luck with your decision.

Wow...they obviously don't care about protecting their brand.
