I'm new to the WISH boards and have been inspired reading your posts. I am 32 and a mother of a 10-year old. I have never had a weight problem.....in fact, in my younger days was always considered to be very skinny (sometimes too skinny). Even after the birth of my daugher, I lost more weight than I gained. I was truly lucky. Then, I turned 30. Boy, does everything change when you turn 30. My metabolism seems to be non-existent. So, now I'm needing to learn about something I've never had to do before - diet and exercise! I am a food lover and that words scares me. Don't get me wrong....I'm not overweight by any means but I'm not happy with myself at all (especially since my husband has become a health fanatic and is skinner than I've ever known him to be). I'm even being realistic by knowing that I'll never have my skinny problems again. I'd love to lose 15 pounds and be happier about my appearance.

So here's my question. I'm not very good at exercising. I have a short attention span and lose interest quickly. I know I need to exercise somehow and was wondering if anyone has tried pilates. When it starts warming up, I plan to walk and ride my bike but I need something to start off with. I've also considered buying some kind of exercise equipment.

What suggestions do you have for starting off?

Thanks for all the help!

Lisa

How to start really depends on your lifestyle. Do you work outside the home? Try getting a bit of walking in at lunchtime. If you are at home, maybe start with an exercise video. Pilates is nice and it is a better workout than you might realize. Before I would invest in an expensive new dust collector, I mean exercise equipment ;) , I would check out a local gym or "Y". The cost may make it worth it, considerig all you get. A nice piece of gym equipment can set you back thousands, where a gym membership for your entire family can cost as little as 500/yr. Then you have a selection of machines, classes, pools, saunas and on. Good luck in whatever you decide. You are wise to start now my friend. I'm 10 years past you and let me tell you, it never got any easier. You think 30 is bad, wait til you hit 35! Get going while you still have youth on your side. Oh yeah! since hubby is a health nut, why not do something together. Tennis, or golf or hiking. Working at a sport with a partner has a much better success rate than going it alone.

Keep the Faith!

Me too. I learned to enjoy exercise by joining a club and signing up for classes. That way, I knew people were expecting me to show up, so I'd go....then once I was there, I never would have had the nerve to walk out of a class before it was finished.....and bingo! A good habit was formed. Now I can't go 2 days in a row without exercise. I'm usually at the gym 6 days a week!

Now, I just have to pay more attention to what I'm putting in my mouth......

I need to lose weight too. I have a free gym with treadmill, eliptical machine and weights but I don't go. I have a wonderful Y down the street. I have pilates videos.... Don't use any of them.

Went to Curves today for the first time. I think that is something I can really get into.

Wanted to wish you luck!!

Hi,

I have to chime in and say Pilates have really helped me on the road to better health...here's why. I was up late one night with an ill but sleeping child last May. I happened to be flipping channels and saw an infomercial for Winsor Pilates. I have NEVER bought anything off the TV before but this really looked great. So, I bought the whole set or really my Mom bought if for me for Mother's day. I received it, took it out of the package and there it sat until one day five months later I couldn't get into my "fat" jeans. The very next morning I started on the basic 10 included in my package...I was HOOKED! No sweating, heavy breathing or fatigue just relaxation and a total feeling of strength. I have noticed such a difference in a really short time. I am so much more toned than before. It is easy to do because it is in short 20 min sessions with the big one twice a week being 55 min.

In short...LOL Try Pilates, you'll love it!

Warmly,

E.:sunny:

Hi Lisa,
I can't help you with the pilates as I haven't given it a go. I just wanted to say good for you for getting motivated! If I had taken that step when I was 35 and 15 lbs over, I would have been so much better off. Now I am 41 and 25 lbs too heavy. I was like you-pretty thin and athletic most of my life, and could eat anything and it just didn't matter. Then I had my children and I got older and it all went south! Good luck with whatever you decide, and check in often and I have found these WISHERS are the best!:yo-yo:
