Rental car company is suggesting a rental of a pike pass...is this really necessary? Seems as if their are plenty of non-toll road routes between the airport and WDW. Also going to US/IOA and SW both seemingly with non toll access. It's been over 10 years since I have been to Orlando so I hoped someone would be more informative than the rental company trying to sell me add ons. THANKS!

There is really no easy way to avoid toll roads from MCO to WDW, however, the toll booths are manned and a toll pass is NOT necessary, just bring quarters with you. There are no tolls between Universal and WDW or SW and WDW.
The rental car companies use boiler plate comments and there are parts of FL where the tolls are all electronic, but, that does not have an effect on anyone flying into Orlando and going to the attractions around Orlando and WDW.
What company are you using, this is the first I have heard of the "pike pass"?

I have not heard of a pike pass but they do sell surpasses here for the tolls

All the toll plazas from the airport to WDW or US are manned and provide change if needed, no need to carry a bunch of quarters.

The above is accurate, with one possible exception. If you take the South exit from the airport and follow 417 (Greenway) be sure to get off at exit 6. If you continue on to exit 3 (which some people take to get to WDW) there is an unmanned toll there.

You're 100% correct, I never use that exit so I didn't think about it, it is a more convenient exit to use if going to AKL, AS, POP and CSR resorts.
I believe that is a $.50 exact change only exit.

Very true, but, many people just like to pay with quarters, who knows why?

I am using thrifty I believe. They charge 8.99 per day for their version of sun pass. They say they charge you 15 per toll if you don't have the pass on the unmanned booths. Sounds like if I run into any they will all be manned, so the pass is kind of a waste.

Yes it is a waste. Be sure to watch the signage for the toll booths. They look like exit ramps, so, keep to the extreme right (the left is for the toll passes).

Yes I could not figure out why anyone would pay $8.99 per day. You can buy your own SunPass for $4.99. When you pickup your rental car you just update your SunPass account with the rental car license plate.

The 4.99 one is a windshield pass and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. The portable ones are 25.00 and those can be recharged and updated. https://www.sunpass.com/pdf/MiniWebPDF_E.pdf
