Pie and Chips - Geico Commercial

In a recent Geico commercial the gecko says something about how it would be nice to get free "pie and chips". Now I'm guessing that the chips part is french fries, but what is pie? Is this a common thing in the UK?

I always thought the Geico lizard was from Australia.

I'm not sure . . .but all I know is that DH absolutely LOVES that commercial for some strange unknown reason . . .

Even when its not on, he uses that phrase "who wouldn't want free pie and chips"

If the gecko was from Australia, he might be refering to a meat pie--kind of like a hot pocket, but way better (And in a pie crist, maybe more like a calzone), but it has meat, potatoes and gravy etc. And they're kind of a snack food, so it might make sense?

Never mind! My mistake! He has a British accent and his voice is now supplied by David Kelly. Before that it was Kelsey Grammar.

If the Geico was from the UK then it could have been a cottage pie or a shepherd's pie.

It could be a pie like this. In England I believe they are known as mutton pies but each area has its own name for the delicacy. It's the same idea as the Australian version mentioned earlier although the contents are slightly different.

The lizard accent is from East London (cockney). My DH co-workers were calling him the GEICO lizard and until we saw the commercial we had no idea what they were talking about. At least the got the right accent. Some one asked him what part of Australia he was from, DH asked him what part of Canada he was from.....


Pie and Chips: Pie is the same as our Pot pie, and chip are French Fries.

Oh my a kindred spirit --- I love that commercial too -- I just giggle when he says - "I mean it's pie and chips -- for free"

I am laughing now even thinking about it -- but I can't explain why...
