Pictures added. Thanks Norway, things are looking up! POFQ Oct. 10-18 – Update Feb. 6

Hi! I can feel your pain. When we went in September 2007, the heat and humidity nearly did us in. We were so miserable that we ended up scrapping most of our plans and just winging it.

Looking forward to reading more!

We walked into the park on the right hand side past Tony’s and headed up Main Street. If I recall correctly – there was a parade going on. I thought Minnie was stopping with her dad to watch it, but turns out she was trying to talk him into a balloon. I walked up and said “No, you can’t take that on rides and we don’t have a stroller to attach it to” and we moved on. My husband wanted to know why I didn’t rescue him sooner. I really thought they were looking at entertainment – not the balloons.

We made our way to the front of the castle where a performance was going on. We stopped to sweat in the sun… oh I mean watch the performance. After it ended we walked to Hall of Presidents. We all like history in our family and Simba is particularly interested. We just missed the show so we headed to try and grab fast passes for Big Thunder... stopping to pose for pictures. We did that and then went to Liberty Tree Tavern lunch.

The food was good. My roast was yummy. My DH was not that fond of his Roast Beef sandwich – he had wished he had picked the roast or the turkey. The wait staff was great – and I thought the atmosphere was nice. We had a window seat in the Ben Franklin room. The kids were bickering over something very pointless… so the meal was not as relaxing as it could have been.

After the meal we went and used our FP for Big Thunder. I must say I do like the fact that a lot of the queues are fanned or air conditioned. That is very different than Disneyland. But it might have to do with the fact Florida apparently gets oppressive heat even in the middle of October. I can’t stress enough how much the heat with humidity took out of us at the beginning of the trip.

At some point my DH said that if we just get into the park and ride something, things get better. The roaming around not riding things was a problem for him. I came on this trip not planning on being a commando park tourist, but until we got to riding things my DH was feeling like we were wasting time and meandering. Once we understood this dynamic, things got better for us. It was a delicate balance, because I wanted to absorb the atmosphere.

Next I think Simba and I rode Splash Mountain. We liked it a lot. I liked the way the logs are better. And it seemed less scary on the big hill. Not an issue for me or Simba – but one for DH and Minnie. Later in the week my DH rode it and loved it. He is not that fond of the one at Disneyland.

I am a little fuzzy about what we did next… but I think we went to POC and Hall of Presidents. We made our way to Fantasyland – riding Snow White, IASW and viewing Mickey’s Philharmagic… Oh and I think I was forced on the Tea Cups at some point. I can’t handle spinning. I would have preferred riding in my own cup with Minnie, but my DH wanted all of us in a cup together so he could torture me. Man, those cups can spin faster in Florida than California. My husband started laughing manically saying “Hey these sure can spin more than in California.” I said that it was because of the lawyers. He was confused. In his defense… when I would yell to stop, he would stop and then spin in the opposite direction. When we got off… I explained that mouseplant.com or miceage.com reported a few years ago that the California cups were made less spin-able. But I had no idea about the difference. The kids loved it. Dh loved it. I thought it was a living hell.

We headed to Tomorrowland and Simba and DH headed off to Stitch. They were underwhelmed. Minnie and I went on Tommowland Speedway. This we did not like nearly as much as in California. The one in California makes you feel like you ‘off roading’ part of the time. Minnie and I then went on Buzz. Once again I thought this was slightly better in California – but just because you can move the laser guns in CA.

We met up again and rode TTA. It was okay to me – the rest of the family found it dull. I think “pretty pointless” was one verbatim.

My DH and Simba rushed to ride Splash Mountain and Minnie and rode Peter Pan. The park was closing for MNSSHP. We did not have tickets so we made our way out of the park.

Touring Tip –

One thing I noticed was at Disneyland, probably because they have more annual passholders /local clientele, people know that as long as you get into line a second before closing you are allowed to ride. It did not seem to be that way at WDW. I am use to seeing people rushing in the last 15 minutes of park closing trying to get to one last ride. In fact, later in the week I stood in line with a person that commented that she didn’t think we would make it on the ride before closing time. I explained that as long as we were in the line – we were going on. Getting that last ride in is part of our park strategy. We sometimes use it for the longer line rides. We have used it at DL the year after Space Mountain was remodeled, the year the Subs reopened, Soarin’, Peter Pan and Dumbo. It is also kind of nice to be leaving an hour after closing. It is almost like the park is your own.

We went back to POFQ and ate at the food court. This started Simba’s rants about the cheap buns and my DH saying “That’s how they get you.” My DH and I split a Fried Chicken meal. It was good. Minnie had a kid’s meal. Simba wanted a hotdog. It was not on the kids dining plan. It took an adult credit. That is when my husband starting saying “That’s how they get you, by making sure the one item a kid would want is not on the kids dining plan.” We get the food to the table and we realize the hotdog bun is split into two pieces. I took it back and they gave us another bun. Halfway through eating it, Simba split the second one in two. Causing Simba to declare Disney World has cheap buns.

We had a nice walk back to the room and called it a night.

Denise

We had stayed at POR last April 2008 and liked the hotel, but HATED the bus service. It seemed our hotel always had the most amount of people getting on it. When we went this year and stayed at the same place, it felt like we were home and the bus service was MUCH MUCH improved. I think the longest we waited to get a bus at the resort was 5 minutes.

The worst part of the whole trip was hands down the HEAT!!

I am looking forward to reading this rest of your report and seeing how your trip was compared to how we faired.
Thanks for posting. I am sorry you had to deal with the heat too... but I am glad that you also thought it was hot.

What is odd... is two weeks out, and the heat is fading for me. Kind of like childbirth - you don't remember how painful it was after the joy of the kids. I have to keep looking at that horrible picture of my DH and I that I posted to mind me of the zombie, walking dead, swampy, sweaty feeling we had.

Great TR!! Having a great time reading. "Cheap Buns" cracked me up!!!

DH and I are both teachers so we can only go in the summer so I feel your pain about the heat and humidity!

That's funny about Simba and the "cheap buns"!!! Sounds like you ended up getting a lot of rides in!

Denise

I'm in and enjoying your report. We were in Orlando/Marco Island/Orlando September 18 - 29 and it averaged 94 each day with humidity. However, we like the hot weather and we have learned to take afternoon breaks at the pool during the worse of it as far as the humidity. But so far it sounds like you are having a great family vacation. Looking forward to more.

One thing I have neglected to detail is the bus waits. I don’t believe we ever had to wait more than 15 minutes at POFQ to catch a bus. Frequently we would see two or three buses to another park before ours came – making us a little frustrated – but the actual wait time was not that long.

When leaving the parks we always caught a bus back very quickly. So overall we had positive experience with Disney transportation – with the exception of the fact my kids took the opportunity to swing from poles like crazy banshees. Maybe Disney should consider hiring bus ogres to keep kids like mine in check. It would make my job easier and our vacation more relaxing.

The bus gets us to the park without anybody being injured.

Oh I should detail our plans today:
50’s Prime Time Café – 4:50pm I think
See Fantasmic (Never have watched this at Disneyland)

We go through the gates and I collected the Keys to the World back from the kids. We start gathering maps when all of a sudden the HSM3 show/parade thing starts making its way down the street.

CRAP – my 6-year-old takes off after it. I turn to my DH and make sure he has Simba and sprint off after Minnie. She only turns around long enough every so often to make sure I am still behind her and then keeps running. I get to see nothing of what Hollywood Boulevard looks like because it becomes a blur during my jog in 92 degree, full sun heat. Panting and sweating I make it to the hat – where they are putting up a rope to create the ‘stage’ area. Minnie is in the front row. I worry about dehydration and heat stroke. My DH and Simba catch up. DH agrees to watch Minnie while Simba and I head over to Staring Rolls to get some water. I also got the kids some chocolate chip cookies.

I get back to Minnie and my DH is nowhere near Minnie. He is walking around taking pictures of Minnie watching the show. Here is where I become paranoid, overprotective mom. If the show were to suddenly break up – Minnie would have got lost in the crowd. Yes, I know this is irrational – as my husband know HSM enough to recognize when the show may be ending. I stood out in the sun near her until my DH returned.

After the show broke up – we headed to The Great Movie Ride after using the rest room. The wait was probably 20 or 30 minutes. It was one of the longest waits of the trip.

The ride was okay – I was not overly impressed. Our tour guide was good and we got a cowboy bandit takeover.

Next we headed to the ABC commissary for lunch. It was just okay – we had burgers.

I’ll finish Day three when I have more time… a little tease - The Death of an iPhone.

How frustrating to chase down your DD in the heat! Are you gonna post any of the pics your DH took?

Denise

After we ate lunch we decided to split up. Minnie and my DH headed to Animation Studios to draw. Simba and I waited in line for Toy Story. The wait was posted as an hour – and I think we waited 50 minutes. Mr. Potato head was not working.

I’ll say this again. I really like the queues with air conditioning in Florida. The Toy Story wait in Florida is much more themed that it is in California.

After this we met up with the rest of family and went to watch the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show. Waiting in line for this is where we experienced our first Brazilian Tourist Sing-along. A group of 15 our so were using fastpasses. While waiting they burst into song. The kids were very confused. I let my DH know that people on the DIS say this is very common.

We were that last people let into the Theatre and we had horrible seats. They were stage left – the last two seats in rows one and two. We could not see whatever was going far stage left. I was not that impressed with the show – but I think the seats had a whole lot to do with it.

Once again we were dragging our kids out of another dump shop. I don’t know if it is my kids ages or what – but they every ride seemed to end in a shop and we had a horrible time getting them out of there. It has never been as bad at Disneyland.

Our dinner was scheduled for 4:40pm so we headed to 50s Prime Time café. We got there 20 minutes early and were seated almost immediately.

We were seated in a small room with 4 tables. It was in the front corner of the building. At first I was disappointed with the table/room. We did not have a TV at our table and the room seemed remote and far away from the action. But once Uncle Dale came to wait on us – my concerns vanished. He was very nice and made the dinner a very wonderful experience. The trip was finally looking up. We were beginning to relax.

Then the phone dropped.

My DH lets Minnie and Simba play with his phone to keep them occupied sometimes. Minnie was trying to show me something she created with the Bushes app when she dropped it without a case face flat down on the grown. The bottom of the screen is shattered – but no glass pieces fell out.

This could have been a really bad moment – but my DH was not very upset (not pleased of course) and we did not ruin our night. The next morning we tried to find a nearby ATT&T store that had iPhones in stock – and the closest one to POFQ did not carry them. My husband taped it with packing tape and decided not to waste travel time and cab fare as long as it was working.

Dinner was yummy. My DH loved his fried chicken and my steak was yummy.

We walked around a little and then headed over to Fantasmic. We got there before they let you be seated. Right about the time they let people in – “I have to go pee” – I took Minnie to the bathroom. Sure enough when we almost fought our way back the where my family was waiting – the crowd started moving. I saw my husband way ahead. Minnie saw them too and started weaving in and out of the EVCs trying to reach them. I was left saying “excuse me” and “I am just trying to catch my daughter who sees her dad.” While Minnie is good for getting you through a crowd – I do need to work on her taking off. This was twice in one day I was left in the dust.

We were in a seated midway up in a center section, Mickey I believe. Then the long wait began. I think it was 90 minutes. That is along time out of park touring. Looking back we could have come about 40 minutes before and still had good seats. But this was a major ‘to do’ for us – so we planned for a long wait.

There were lots of Brazilians there too. The wave started – and when it died down some of the tour groups held up a large flag of Brazil and broke into song. Best I can figure it was the national anthem – because a man pretty close to us and not obviously connected to the tour groups stood up and sang along passionately.

My kids were once again confused. They couldn’t understand why so many people were able to sing along to something they had never heard before.

While the tour groups were large and louder, we were not put off by them. I know some DISers have had bad experiences – everybody we saw just appeared to be out to have a great time at Disney.

The show finally started and we thought it was wonderful. At the very end my DH did get ash in his eye from the pyrotechnics. We were a shocked and a little disturbed. I don’t know whom my DH stopped to ask about it – but it was a cast member who told him it was probably ash and he should flush his eye and head to first aid if that did not take care of it. He went to the bathroom on our way out to rinse his eye and that did the trick.

Simba really wanted to ride Rockin Rollercoaster but Minnie is too small. My DH and Simba waited and Minnie and I did a little sticker craft project in the area. One of the CMs working it was from Ireland. So Minnie got to visit with an Irish guy.

I realized it was about 15 minutes until park close. I decided to rush Minnie to Toy Story. We get there with 4 minutes to spare. Even though the line was just as long as it was when Simba and I rode earlier in the day – our wait was shorter – about 30 minutes.

After we got off – I had a cell phone call from an unknown FL number. The voice message was from my husband. They were in guest services wanted to know where we were. We headed to try and find guest services. As we got to the end of Hollywood Boulevard we ran into Simba and Grumpy. They LOVED RnR.

We headed out of the park. There was the longest line at the POFQ bus stop. It went back 3 or 4 stations. But they started bringing two busses at a time and I don’t think we waited more than 15 minutes.

Back to beautiful POFQ and off to bed. Well, probably watched some Disney channel program. We really had trouble getting the kids to sleep at night.

UP NEXT - Our 'rest' day with lunch at Whispering Canyon, will we really be able to stay out of the parks?

Yikes on the phone breaking; I'm glad it didn't ruin the night, though! I'm looking forward to hearing about Whispering Canyon. We had an ADR there on our last trip, but ended up cancelling it.

Denise

Sorry it had taken me so long to update. I hope I still have people interested in our trip report.

This was supposed to be our day out of the parks. I had planned lunch at Whispering Canyon and nothing beyond that. I thought we might try horseback riding and exploring the grounds– but the oppressive heat pretty much nixed that from consideration.

We decided to take a bus from POFQ to MK and then take the boat to WL. This was supposed to be our non-park day. But Grumpy felt we needed to go to the parks.

Simba woke up a bit stuffy – so I gave her some Triaminic. Nighttime Triaminic. Cue the music of doom. The signal of foreboding peril.

We made it to the Magic Kingdom. I recall walking up Main Street, stopping somewhere on the right to grab food – someplace like Starring Rolls at DHS. Simba’s behavior was very poor. She was acting like a 4-year-old. It was out of the ordinary. She was not acting tired – just crazy. She can be whiny – but this was over the top.

At this point I realized she was having some sort of reaction to the medicine. I have never given her Nighttime Triaminic other than bedtime – or lying around the house, not being expected walk, think or behave. The medicine, in 94+ degree heat with 90% humidity, turned my baby into a monster. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that bad. But I was NOT pleased.

At this point I confessed to Grumpy about what I had done. Hell, I couldn’t have him think that Simba had suddenly become demon possessed.

He kind of had the look of abject fear, and told me never to give her that except at bedtime ever again. Ah… I had pretty much figured that one out on my own.

We somehow made it to POTC. We rode it and then headed out of MK by way of the Dole Whip stand.

While Grumpy was getting the Dole Whips for everyone but me (I did not want one)– I had the kids at a pin stand. Have I mentioned how much I HATED my kids around shops this trip. I have NEVER felt this way at Disneyland. I don’t know if it is their ages, or the way that WDW places shopping opportunities… but I was so tired of the “Can I have this Mommy” or “Mommy I want this” by the end of the trip I could scream. We basically allowed our kids a couple of souvenirs for the week… but were asked to buy things dozens of times a day.

We made our way out of the park and took the boat to WL. Simba was still droopy – but was semi-human. The trip over was a little hot… but it was nice.

The hotel was very nice. Very similar to the Grand Californian, but more rustic. But it was hot and humid outside and it was close to our ADR so we did not spend time exploring outside. We had to pass by yet another pin stand to get to Whispering Canyon. I was beginning to get a headache so I was short on patience with the girls – Minnie this time – and their desire to ‘shop.’

We checked in and had a few minute wait. By the time the girls were washed up it was time to be seated. We sat at a 4 top table. I did not think the layout/décor of this restaurant was anything special. We were also near the end of lunch service – so the place was half empty. So the action/ambience was not what I expected. But the service was VERY good. When I could not decide between the Brunswick Stew or the Chicken Sandwich, our waitress (whose name I wish I could remember) suggested that I get the stew (which I was leaning toward anyway) and that she would make sure Grumpy – who was getting the skillet – would get extra chicken. Sold.

When the food got there my DH had a TON of chicken on his plate. Our waitress told him “That’s your wife’s, you know.’ I loved my stew. It was an oppressively hot day – yet I ate a full bowl of stew. I can’t stress enough how wonderful the service was. While the fun/silly atmosphere I expected was not there… the wonderful service made for a terrific dining experience.

After lunch we went to the gift shop on the way out. Unfortunately the meal had not dulled my headache. I thought it was not hunger related, but not so. I got some Tylenol and my DH looked for a Disney ski cap for his dad. He is batting lymphoma and my DH wanted to get him something for his balding head. Remember we are experiencing oppressive heat. No ski caps to be found.

We decided to head to EPCOT. So much for our downtime, park free day. It’s turning into park hopping fun.

Our bus ride was an interesting experience. We ran to make a bus that said EPCOT. We had not said “Headed to EPCOT” or something similar to the bus driver. That is what I normal do, just to make sure we are on the correct bus.

We end up heading toward the campgrounds. We are at the very back of the bus and our kids are attempting to do their pole swinging ill behavior. My husband and I look at each other and say “Is this bus going to EPCOT?”

At the risk of being politically incorrect I am going to describe what happened next in detail. It was just so surreal.

A woman sitting in front of us, who was missing several teeth, told me that we were going to Ft. Wilderness. Next, a man I assume is her husband, who is missing a wrist and hand (and the base of the arm was wrapped in gauze, like it was a new injury) began to friendly argue with his wife about the bus. He knew it was headed to EPCOT after Ft. Wilderness. They appeared to have older teens, who were avoiding the conversation and my banshee children. You could see this family being thankful that these kids did not belong to them. It was a common thread on most of our bus trips. At this point my DH asked if they were camping at Fort Wilderness and if they liked it. They said they were and it was very nice. My DH and I borrowed an RV (class c) for Spring Break a year ago and we really liked it. If our health is good, I can really see us RVing in retirement. My widowed aunt (late 60s) and her new husband (early 70s) RV in class A. They have even come out our way. It is just very appealing to us.

We stopped at Fort Wilderness and let off most of the bus and headed toward EPCOT.

UP NEXT : How many times do I have to ride Spaceship Earth in a row?????

Oh no, sorry to hear that you and Simba were not feeling well. The humidity makes everything worse...Glad you enjoyed your lunch, though!

Wednesday Oct. 14 – part 2

So this was supposed to be our day out of the parks – we have just eaten a late, filling, yummy lunch at Whispering Canyon. When I last left off we were on a bus to Epcot by way Fort Wilderness.

We finally arrive at the Epcot bus stop. It was more of a walk to the front gate than I was expecting. This is the park I was most anticipating. To be honest I was not that impressed initially.

There was a restroom on the way to the park from the bus stop – a HUGE bonus for traveling with kids. But the décor was not themed in any way. I thought it was going to be an anomaly – after all it was outside the park. But most of the future world bathrooms were very much like this one. I know it is silly – but one thing I love about Disney is the way they keep the theme going even in the restrooms.

Upon entry into the park everything seemed too sterile and white to me. It was not the warm, welcoming feeling I am use to when entering Disney parks. We make it into the park and there is a big golf ball waiting for us to ride. Spaceship Earth was practically a walk on. We really liked it, especially the end part where you chose your future. We ride again and then enjoy some of the interactive activities and the end. My 9-year-old Simba wants to go again. As much as I liked the two rides – it is a longer ride to go a third time. Simba and Grumpy ride again and Minnie and I head off to Future World for a date with Figment.

I was very excited about riding Journey to Imagination. The ride did not disappoint. I think it is my new favorite dark ride. It was very cute and well done.

Minnie was very fascinated with the Kodak demonstration at the end of the ride. Simba and Grumpy joined us for a ride – and Minnie was still very fascinated at the end of the ride again. She would not leave. We felt for sure that she would get picked to take part. This is the kind of thing nobody bothers to stick around for. Grumpy gave Simba her flip camera to start filming. That caused the Kodak lady to pick SIMBA and not Minnie to take part. Believe me – I do not expect my kids to be chosen – but if it is going to be one of mine –Please, oh please let it be the one who has been waiting 45 minutes, sitting like a little angel. Not the one who does not care about it and shows up just 2 minutes before the selection.

This was UGLY. I think this would have to be the low point of the trip. Worse than the broken iPhone. Worse than the oppressive heat at Animal Kingdom.

Simba takes part and Minnie is heartbroken. Of my two kids – Minnie really doesn’t sweat the small things. She pretty much goes with the flow the majority of the time. She can get crabby when she is tired at the end of the day. But it is predictable.

This was awful. Had it been anybody else other than Simba selected – Minnie would have been a little disappointed for about 30 seconds and them moved on. The selection of Simba brought our afternoon to a grinding halt.

I was so mad at the Kodak lady. We tried to come up with something that would make Minnie feel better. Her idea was to stick around until she got selected. This did not sound like a good or realistic plan to me. The Kodak lady would not even look in her direction. Grumpy and I had no desire to stay around for the demo anymore. We were wasting park time.

Up next: Will we be able to move on?

Love the TR so far, thanks! :) And I can't wait to hear if you were able to escape...

We're in southern CA, so the DL comparisons are very helpful. :cheer2:
