Picture Project and Lightroom

I am going to be using Lightroom to simplify my "workflow" (if you can call it that). Do I still need to use Nikon Picture Project to transfer the photos from my camera to my PC? If not, is there any reason to keep Picture Project installed on my PC? I am really trying to remove all unnecessary photo stuff from my harddrive. I have managed to achieve a cluttered mess of photo programs and I really need to get rid of some of this stuff.

If your using a card reader, then I personally can't see a reason you need the nikon stuff, if you transfer from your camera, then most likely you still need it.

I have my D80 set to "Mass Storage." When I connect it to my computer, Lightroom immediately fires up it's import dialog. It handles the RAW(NEF) files with no problem. Seamless! :thumbsup2

What about jpegs? I often shoot in RAW+jpeg.

I'm pretty sure that it will import both off the card, but only the RAW will show up on the library.

I know that when I shoot JPG, it pulls those in. I haven't tried shooting both at the same time so I don't know what it does in that case. I suppose it might see a possible duplicate but I doubt it. I can check it out for you when I get home this evening.

On page 5 of Scott Kelby's book "The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers" it says:

"Here's a weird thing; if you have your digital camera set to shoot RAW+JPEG, when you try to import them, Lightroom will recognize the RAW photos and ignore the JPEGs, because they have the same name in the same folder (eventhough the file extensions are different). To get around this, select all your JPEG's and put them in a separate folder before importing."

If you're shooting RAW+Jpeg, why would you want it to import both the RAW and the jpg?

It can definitely do jpgs, I've been going through my old 2mp Fuji photos, in fact I just put all my Romania honeymoon photos on my site the other day, all tweaked with Lightroom.

For getting them off the camera, I still prefer copying the photos to my hard drive manually, then pointing Lightroom to that folder and having it import in place.

Thanks. I just ordered that book the other day, but was too cheap to pay for expedited shipping.

I often just use the jpegs straight from my camera. My camera produces pretty good jpegs and I will just crop or straighten those and use them as my final copy. However, I will use the RAW image if I have to make a white balance or exposure adjustment. Sometimes I even like the jpeg the camera converts better than my own RAW conversion. So, I guess I just like to have it both ways! (Have I mentioned that my "workflow" is kind of cumbersome? )

I just shot both and it imported both into lightroom for me. It will do the same file name with different extensions, but not the same file name with the same extension, even if they are in different folders.

I also drag and drop to my HDD then point lightroom there. MAybe that is the difference.

Thanks so much! I have much to learn.
