All the joy of celebrating the 4th of July today left me earlier today. It started this morning when I saw this post on Facebook and completely left me later in the day when we learned one of the 20 missing campers at Camp Mystic is a little 8 year old girl from our town...the granddaughter of one of our well known attorney's and a former student of the pre-school my DD used to work at. As of midnight tonight, she is still missing but a few of her fellow campers have been found and added to the list of now 24 confirmed dead. This flash flood occurred after the predicted 2-4 inches of rain turned into 16 inches in some spots after the weather pattern stalled over the area between 3 and 5 AM. This is one of our most beautiful spots in Texas and the Guadalupe River is the #1 "tubing" river. There are numerous summer camps in the area as well as many RV camping grounds; it's probably the summers most popular tourist spot in Texas. Our hearts are breaking...

I've been following this also! I read that the camp was huge with 750 campers; that's massive. I remember a made for tv movie about a similar flood in 1987 on that river causing the loss of 10 campers when a bus and van tried to cross the floodwaters. Such tragedy and a horrible way to die...

Yes....1987 was the last time the area had a massive flood. My brother-in-law spoke with some friends who retired to the area a few years ago and their "house on a hill" is surrounded by water. I messaged cousins (also retired to the area) in Kerrville who are stuck in their subdivision until water recedes on the main highway. Schreiner College has opened their campus for those flooded out of their homes and the cafeteria is serving meals. Allie played soccer there so we've toured the area; in fact, that was the college we saw deer in the parking lot on campus. . I thought I read last night the camp was established almost 100 years ago and it's very much in demand. No news on our little girl. Just last week I worked on Katie's "Camp Hope" square of her quilt and was remembering what an awesome time she had, as well as the 2 years Allie attended the same camp. Such a special week for them and my thoughts kept going to that. I had to finally stop checking Facebook for updates; every report was more frightening than the previous one. That is one of my biggest fears...being caught in a flash flood. Having witnessed the water flow of flooding in our area, I can see the unbelievable power and, yes, it has to be an awful way to die.

Just heartbreaking news! I'm so sorry to hear this Karolyn; prayers for everyone. I just saw some updates online; it's so incredible that anyone survived and was rescued from the water. And such a terrible event in what looks like an absolutely beautiful area (Hill Country?). I have a DIS friend who wants to return to Texas (her home state) and live in the Hill Country; hopefully far from this river.

Still holding out hope. Just saw this posted on Facebook...terrible mistake but totally understand the chaos the Authorities are having to deal with...

"To clear up confusion- earlier news reporting put Virginia Hollis' deceased- however they had her name on the wrong person. (Everyone is human I guess) At 10pm on Saturday the family was still holding out hope of sweet Virginia's return. Please- say a prayer- say 2- let's bring this sweet angel home- God has the final say."

They've rescued 850 people! Can you imagine. And I'm following the missing pets page too...poor animals. Just saw a post from a couple who have a beautiful white dog in their garage hiding behind a storage container. She hasn't come out all day; they were looking for someone with more experience with animals to help them deal with her. Some of the videos I've seen today have been heart wrenching. I just answered a text from my BFF (close to midnight); she's so upset she can't sleep. Hope your Dis friend can find a nice spot; It's probably the most beautiful part of Texas. My cousins retired to the town of Kerrville a couple years ago. They're far enough from any of the major rivers but close enough to enjoy them when they feel like doing some fishing. I messaged them yesterday and they were fine but the roads leading to their subdivision were flooded; I'm sure that's cleared up by now. To be honest, after almost 48 hours, I'm not holding out much hope. There's just to much devastation. By the end of today, the first responders are even having a hard time dealing with it.
