Disneyland’s Fred Gurley Engine No. 3
December 2, 2015

This magnificent locomotive may just be the oldest thing at Disneyland! Yes its true, the engine started its service at Disneyland in 1958 but it started its life in 1894, more than 120 years ago.

Fred Gurley, Walt’s friend was the president of the Santa Fe Railway from 1944 - 1957.

Next time you visit Disneyland, tip your cap or “ears” to this bit of living and fire breathing history.

This was taken in the mid-80s at York, Pennsylvania's first "1st Night" celebration [one year after Boston started the trend]. The city was able to get Mickey and Minnie to make an appearance.

Sorry for the quality of the photo. It was taken before I got a 'good' camera, and I was taken by surprise not knowing they were going to be doing this and had to fight the crowd to catch up as best I could. The historic Yorktowne Hotel is in the background.
