I only use cable release for my fireworks shots. I just sort of wing it with the timing, trying to get as many complete bursts as possible without over exposing. Looks like I only did 1.7 seconds on this one. I typically blow out the finale shots so was purposely trying to go shorter on some of those this time. Generally I stick with the 4-7 second range unless I'm using a neutral density filter. I just count off in my head and let go when it "feels" done.
