OK, so I've taken the plunge and have gotten my first DSLR, a Nikon D60. I'm trying to learn all about it, to read up and practice. It's incredible overwhelming and scary at times trying to figure out what I need to do in various situations- what is best to do at different points- does anyone else feel this way? I'm loving learning to use the camera. I'm looking for advice on how to make my pics better- any advice is much appreciated! I know they are not the best, so I'm looking for advice. I have not retouched them yet- I haven't quite figured that out yet! Here are some pics I took at the dog park yesterday

sounds like you are doing what you can. i think learning about your camera via practice and reading is a great first step. the photos look good so far! the sky isn't totally blown out, the horizons are straight, the focus looks good. keep practicing and you'll feel more confident soon. once you get used to the camera you can try some things like not putting your subject in the dead center, etc but for right now just keep doing what you are doing:)( it looks like you are trying that but it will become more natural)

Practice Practice Practice Read Read Read Practice Practice Practice some more. Get out and shoot is the best way to learn. You are not paying to develop film so dont be afraid to put the camera on continuous shoot and click off 3 or 4 of the same shot as a series. Lots of times you will find the shots in the middle of the series to be the best ones. Any that dont work you can just delete in post processing. Straight horizons are a biggie and when taking photos of kids and animals ... get down to their level as opposed to shooting "down" on them. There are lots of wonderful, helpful threads here on the dis from many really awesome photographers. Its one of my biggest sources for ideas, tips and help. Don't be afraid to post with any questions you have right here and you will get lots of informative and helpful responses I am sure bc :disrocks: !!

Thanks for the responses. I picked up a book on exposure today, and I have already discovered that there is a wealth of knowledge of info here on the Dis- it's one of my favorite sites! I've been trying to read up on my camera with a couple of different books and have been trying to find different things to photograph. I'm having fun learning about my new toy!
