I have been googling for an hour and have yet to fix upon the right combo of words to find pics of what is at the top of SE, you know, where it's super dark and you turn around. I have only ever experienced the current ride and I'm super curious as to what is up there in the dark! I heard that once upon a time it was a whole miniature city. Every time I ride I have to resist the urge to take a flash pic or use my light on my cell. Can anyone point me to some pics and "illuminate" this for me? Thank you in advance!

I don't understand your question. Are you talking about the ceiling?

Or the scene you see at the top? (Which I believe is of an illuminated Earth).

Either way, flash won't help you discover the secret; you will only capture the space about 2 feet in front of you doing that.

Are you talking about the lights? Which just look like hanging strands of fiber optic lights to me.

Sounds like you want the Earth/space scene at the top, but with the lights on. I've never seen a picture of this.

THIS is what I want. I have *heard* from friends that have been going since they were kids that the scene at the top (what is now essentially a dark room with a projection of the earth at the top) USED to have an entire tiny city scene laid out in front of you. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I have also contemplated a very large flashlight to see what it there. I don't think I'd ever do it, but I've thought about it. Should I be ashamed?

I'm just super super curious about all that black space! Don't ask me why b/c I don't know myself LOL.

For thinking it? No. For doing it? Absolutely.

 I'd never actually do it. (I would never ruin anyone else's magic intentionally!) But I think about carrying a high-powered flashlight on a LOT of rides lol. Especially ToT and other "dark" rides. I know I'm pitiful but for me, to see the mechanics BEHIND the magic actually makes it more enjoyable. I love knowing how things work, and Disney has so many neat things to know about! :goodvibes

I am pretty sure that Spaceship Earth used to have a lit-up, futuristic city scene. Or am I thinking of the one you see on Peoplemover at MK? Or what used to be at the end of World of Motion? Argh! Too many futuristic scenes to remember! :faint:

I think your friends are confused. There's a miniature city in the peoplemover (magic kingdom) -- it's a model of some of the ideas from walt disney's original EPCOT concept (when it was still planned to be an actual city). There was also a sparkly city pair toward the tale end of Spaceship Earth in its last iteration (before you get to the top), with fiber optic lights showing communication networks connecting the cities. There may also have been something similar in Horizons (worth a youtube!). Spaceship Earth, however, was always just the earth from space at the top.

There used to be a satellite hanging in there with the projection of the Earth. There may have also been some sort of space station.

Here is a pic I found:

I'm familiar with TTA's model of a futuristic Epcot city. I'm thinking the fiber optic communications thing is what they were thinking of.

Still begs the Q... what's in the dark up there? ;) Sadly it's probably storage lol.

Sometimes dark corners are exactly as they appear to be: empty dark corners.

There indeed used to be a futuristic city in the descent from the top of Spaceship Earth, with a dark sky and "beams" of communication extending from it (as I remember, the city was on the edge of a lake of black reflective glass- a rather nice effect. I think it was about halfway down.

I'm pretty sure that's the fiberoptic city I mentioned earlier (and someone linked a photo), which was -- I think -- just before getting to the top.

I DO think this is what my friends were referring to. I watched an old YouTube vid from around 2006 and that makes the most sense. NOT at the top though like they were thinking.
