Pics of San Pedro, CA

Can't remember if I've mentioned, but on our recent trip to visit family in L.B. the lights on the VTB (vincent Thomas Bridge) are blue. The bridge looks beautiful at night. There's rumor that the bridge will be replaced by a larger one. My MIL remembers when the current bridge was started and I remember when the tolls for getting over the bridge were banished.

If any of you remember "The Pike" in Long Beach, the property has been redeveloped. They've built more restaurants where the Pike once sat and they even put in a small ferris wheel for nestalsia (sp?).

I checked on rental cars and this is the info I got

Enterprise charges $40 to drop the car off at John Wayne
Budget and Hertz will reimburse you cab fare up to $10.00

I found the best rate at Budget - I got a Grand Marquis for $45.00 for 1 day.

Thanks for the pictures.

We are desperately searching for a web cam of the Port. Do you have any ideas where we can find out if there is one...or do you know of one....Or better yet....can you find out since you are there???????

I've exhausted all my resources that I can think of at the moment.....any help would be appreciated by all.............

Phyllis

Can one of you locals who have been so kind with all your great information tell me what the area is around the Hyatt Long Beach. We're planning on staying there a couple of nights before we get on our cruise. We're also planning on going to the Aquarium of the Pacific, my DS 9 LOVES aquariums.

Any other activities and fun ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for all the wonderful pictures and maps.

There's Shoreline Village. There's some retail shops and a vintage merry go round. The maria is right there and restaurants. I think the Hyatt's pool is outdoors and faces the ocean. Remember the movie True Lies and they jump out of the window and into the pool? That's the Hyatt's pool!

If you feel adventureous, go to Catalina Island. It's an hour's boat ride. You might see whales or dolphins on the way over. Catalina's a beautiful island.

There's also the Queen Mary. Disney once owned the ship. It's beena while since I've been on it, but it's great to be on board and get that Titanic feeling. http://www.queenmary.com/gallery.php?page=getimage&image=015.jpg

Not too far from the hotel are the canal walks. It's in a residential neighborhood and you walk over bridges and along the houses of the canal. Its very relaxing. http://www.stockteam.com/naples2.html

The Pike is right next to the Hyatt. There are movie theaters, restaurants, a Game Works with a bowling alley, shops and more here. My family usually goes over to the Pike after going to the aquarium. http://www.shopthepike.com

If you're planning on going to the aquarium, check out their website http://www.aquariumofthepacific.org because they usually have a list of places to get discounted tickets (AAA, Costco, etc). If you have an entertainment book, there is a coupon in there for a buy 1 get 1 free admission.

What GREAT pictures! Thanks so much for sharing. We're planning on going to the Aquarium while we're down there, so it was great to see these. It reminded me so much of the Monterey Aquarium.

:rotfl: Now I know why it reminds me of the Monterey Aquarium - I just found this online.

(The architecture is a joint venture of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassanbaum (HOK) and Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis (EHDD) of San Francisco. EHDD designed the critically acclaimed Monterey Bay Aquarium and has collaborated on the plans for numerous marine exhibitions worldwide.)

Thanks for the links and info my son is now dancing :cool1: around the house because I took a peek at The Pike and saw that it had a Bubba Gumps. He's been wanting to to go back to a Bubba Gumps since we went to Monterey almost 2 years ago.

I just checked out the Shoreline Village website http://www.shorelinevillage.com/. It looks really cool thanks! My DD 2 will LOVE the carousel and my DS 9 will love everything! We did some passenger surrey bycicles in Monterey and LOVED them, I can't wait to do them again. Thanks again for all the help and information. :cool1:

For anyone who will be awake at 5 or 6 am on the day you arrive in LA...PLEASE stand on the port side of the ship and wave, as there will be a green group of us, ballons, airhors, banners and all. We are going to stand...not by the dock (that won't be open)...but in the middle of a bunch of restaraunts that line the water side. PLEASE look for us. We will be there to welcome you to California...and then to kick you off the ship! jk If anyone can get the word to Capt. Thord, can you ask him to toot the horn for us? PLEASE GUYS, be there for us as we'll be there for you!!!

HEY!!! I WANT TO BE THERE W/YOU GUYS WHEN YOU WELCOME THE MAGIC & OUR FELLOW DISERS!

So, the ship is coming in around 5am? I want to take pics of it from a lookout point near Pt. Fermin, as the ship comes up - should I be there around 4:30?

I then plan to go down & take pics -- are you going to be by the Acapulco Restaurant? :sunny:

Thought I would throw a couple of pics ...

The first is a pic of the entry to the Port of Los Angeles, and the second is a picture of the Best Western hotel across the street from Ports O' Call with the Sheraton behind it.

Click on the pictures to see a bigger version:

Note: There is a helicopter in this shot. My dd & I saw someone being lowered in the ocean - later on in the news it was reported that there was a rescue going on -- I didn't see any boats in the area, so I don't know how that person got there in that part of the ocean (they weren't too far from the breakwater, though).

Wow Mary Jo, your DH wasn't holding on to your pants as you were taking the cliff shot was he?! :earseek: :rotfl2: I can't wait 'til Saturday. :teeth:

BTW, thanks for the photos. :flower: Let's hope for no fog and clear skies on Saturday! :wizard:

CruisingCA, or PattiPB or Taeja71 - or anyone familiar with San Pedro Pier/area - can you recommend any ground transportation we can call ahead of time to reserve for a pick up at pier to take us to DL - Fairfield Inn.

We are having Supershuttle pick us up at LAX to drop us off at the Best Western. Two vans - I think $62 each (don't quote me - Wendy has all the notes - we are 12 people all together).

We are having a van (two vans - $40 each) pick us up at the BW to take us to pier next morning.

We need a car to pick us up after the cruise to take us to DL Fairfield.

We might also call Fairfield to see if they can recommend someone (unless you can recommend one), to have a van pick us up at Fairfield and drop us off at LAX (5 people - Wendy leaving next day - 7 people).

Thank you. Hope I didn't mess this up.
