Picky older child?

I know Disney's policy is that only children age 3-9 can order off the child menu. However, my DS11 is a very picky eater and would probably only want chicken fingers, hamburger, pizza. Will he be allowed to order off the child menu and just pay a higher price? At counter service it isn't much of a big deal, but at table service, a lot of times I don't see much on the adult menu that DS would want to eat. Also I don't want to pay $20 or more for something for him that he probably won't eat anyway.

Any suggestions?

We just got back last night from our trip with our picky 12 yo DS. We were on the DDP and every restaurant we went to allowed him to eat off either the adult or kids menu. In fact, they even allowed him to mix the two. Since on the DDP you are allowed an appetizer, entree, and dessert he was told he could have an adult appetizer or dessert but a kids entree. At the WL he wanted the nachos for an appetizer, but being picky, didn't want the chili or tomatoes on them. They made his plate of nachos with melted cheese only, which made him very happy! In my opinion the restaurants work extremely hard to accommodate all tastes, especially kids!

That's great that they were so accommodating. We are doing a land/sea combo though, so we cannot add the DDP. I hope they will allow us to make some substitutions as well.

1) If you pay cash, you can eat from any menu. *
. . . adults can eat from kids menus
. . . kids can eat from adults menus
. . . you can share plates adult-to-adult, kid-to-kid, or kid-to-adult
2) So, don't worry.

* For buffet meals, kids are charged as kids, adults as adults.

I'm a picky grown-up and ordered off the kids' menu at the Brown Derby. :)

My DS (13) at time of trip ordered off the kid's menu almost every restaurant. No problem whatsoever.

Sometimes we had to ask for the kid's menu but it was still no big deal.

Go and enjoy!

So do they charge a higher price for those ordering from the kid's menu who are older than 9? I understand if they do, just want to know what to expect.

A kids meal costs the same no matter the age of the person who will eat it. I am 36 years old and order kids meals from counter service restaurants all the time. The only time age matters as far as prices go- is at buffets- the prices are fixed based on age.

This is good to know! DS just turned 10, and we are not purchasing the DDP again since he eats so little. We have the DDE card, so we are using that in December. I was wondering if the TS places would allow him to order from the kids menu since that is what he will want. He won't even finish a normal size kids meal, so I don't want them to add more food to justify charging a higher price. Hopefully it won't be a problem!

Yes, I was just there and it only matters in buffet type places. If you are on the Disney Dining Plan you can either order something from the kids menu (but of course it 'costs' an adult TS credit) and add an adult appetizer or dessert. In some places such as the Whispering Canyon Cafe they will also make you an 'extra large child's portion' since you are techincally paying for an adult. Another restaurant did this too ..can't remember which one..SciFi perhaps?

We were never charged an "up charge" when my DS ordered off the kids menu. However there were times when they brought him the larger sized drink (didn't offer or tell about a different size) and charged us for the larger amount. This was in July and the larger size was just fine though.

I think this as with everything depends on the CM though.

The one time we were charged a higher price was when I ordered a cheeseburger for myself at the SciFi a couple years ago before they were on the dinner menu. It was the most expensive cheeseburger that I have ever ate
