Picky Eaters

My 11 son is autistic and while over the last few months, he has started to try new foods, it is hit and miss and still very limited (pizza, chix strips, hotdog and PB & J).. We have been to WDW many, many times and usually have good luck with getting something and wait staff is usually very sweet and accommodating, usually we can get Uncrustables at most restaurants, but wanted to check on a couple, before I make reservations...
Anybody know what might be available at BOG, Teppon Edo.

My 8yr old also has autism and a very limited diet. At BOG, he ended up only eating French fries and licking a cupcake. I haven't taken him to Tep. Edo because he wouldn't handle the "show" and "fire" part (However brief) well so I cannot speak for that restaurant.

When is your trip? Are you considering BOG for breakfast, lunch, or dinner? The dinner menu there changes July 27. A new menu is not available yet. I'm a little worried as we have a dinner reservation there (made before the announcement to change the menu) on July 27. I'm hopeful a new menu will be available before then as my DD is a very picky eater. The current dinner menu at BOG works for her- she eats the mac and cheese, and we order it with french fries. If both of those are removed from the menu, she will refuse to eat.

My son (with Asperger's) is also very picky! He will at least eat french fries, so that's an option. He likes bacon and bread, so if there's a sandwich on the menu, I can ask for a plain bacon sandwich. I've also carried Jif Singles in my purse, so I can order plain bread or a hamburger bun and make him a sandwich. Breakfast isn't usually a problem because he likes pancakes and french toast. I like to look at menus ahead of our trips and keep in mind which places have something he will eat.

I feel like BOG will be more accommodating than Teppan Edo. Teppan Edo has children's meals but they are not the usual chicken tender options and most of the meal comes from the hibachi (other than the rice/soup/salad). BUT the restaurant in the same building as Teppan Edo, Tokyo Dining, does have tempura chicken nuggets as a kids meal option so they might be able to get you that if you put in a request ahead of time. I don't think they will be able to find an Uncrustable to give you because no restaurant nearby offers them (I think the closest would be the quick service in the US portion of the World Showcase).

Teppan Edo doesn't do fire at all. They do the little show when they are cooking, and make steam from the onion volcano, but no fire on the grill.

I doubt T.E. will have anything he wants to eat. Their kids' meals are pretty much smaller portions of the adult menu. There is steak, chicken or shrimp with rice and veggies. I thought I saw somewhere that the kids' meals include the miso soup, but my "kids" are older teens, so I don't know for sure.

my 10 year old on the spectrum who is pretty picky would not be into Teppan Edo. There is really nothing he'd eat there... he'd eat the meats but no noodles or veggies or rice or anything. If you want something kind of similar and asianish, try 'Ohana. My son LOVES it there because they will bring him as much kid food as he wants but he can try some of the other stuff... last time he ate his weight in steak and mac and cheese (steak from the regular menu, mac and cheese from kid offerings), decided he liked bread pudding but also ate the kid cupcake as well. He's asked for it again, he loves grilled meats now (it is a recent last few years thing, before that it was more like nuggets and hot dogs). I find my son is most likely to try new things under circumstances where it is low pressure, ie he doesn't have to worry about ordering something and not liking it. The family style and buffets are always huge hits because he is proud to try new stuff with zero pressure about me having to order a second thing and throwing out the first if he doesn't like it. Of course now that he is a Disney adult it's a bit more costly but I kind of just pay what it is and don't worry about it at Disney. Rest of the year I am much more budget oriented.

With BoG for dinner he loved the kid's steak with fries subbed, He also ate tons of rolls and butter and loved the dessert. It was a big hit. I agree you need to see what the new menu is if it's dinner but if it's lunch, my son would eat a turkey sandwich (plain) and nothing off the kid's menu. We plan to try lunch there, his dad took him and made him order the turkey meatloaf but he couldn't deal with the texture (i make it for him in a way that he likes at home but it's always a miss when we are out). BoG kid's menu is a little tough for picky kids, but you can always get a side of fries and a cupcake and feed him something more substantial later.

I have dining reports linked in my sig and I talk extensively and frankly about my picky kid's food issues if it's helpful!

I don't think I would try Teppon Edo. From what you said, I don't think he would like the food. Depending on where he is on the spectrum, not sure he would do well with the cooking and steam. It was a few years ago, when we were there, but they did fire also (it sound slike that may have stopped).
For BoG, as others have pointed out, the end of July, evening switches to a completely pre-fixe meal. Not optional, no ala carte. It looks like you will be there after that, so I would encourage you to do lunch.

Jif singles! I had no idea there was such a thing! What a great idea! I will have to get some of these.

I would avoid BOG dinner, if it's after the switchover. It will be expensive prix fixe, and I think if you're dodging food issues, a prix fixe that is not a buffet will be a bad fit for your family.

I just thought I'd share something, our son is now 23 out of college and getting ready for grad school, also fairly high functioning Asperger's. What has amazed me is his food curiosity really changed after high school. Growing up he had to try things, but mostly he was a Mac & Cheese as well as PJ&J (well he still has a PB&J just about every day) but he's become very into more exotic foods. He regularly goes out to lunch and dinner for Sushi, Middle Eastern, Japanese and a few others. When I finally ask why, he said it was our trips to Epcot and having him try samplers. He knows he used to be very picky, but it warmed my heart that he felt the trips to Disney is what got him to expand his choices later on in life.
