Picky eater alert

I haven’t been on these boards for years. We booked our first trip since 2019 this weekend and decided to look a few things up. I totally forgot how crazy people can be on here!

The original poster asks an innocent question about food options and you end up getting parenting lectures from random people who feel the need to interject. Unbelievable!

Appreciate the numerous posts from the keyboard warriors bashing my 3 year old child's eating habits as well as my parenting skills. Exactly the sort of helpful feedback I was looking for when asking a question about eating food ON A VACATION. If any moderator wants to lock this thread please feel free. I got what I needed. Cheers everyone.

Our next trip will be the first time as an "adult" for me son (he'll be 12, and we were last able to go at 9). He is picky, he doesn't like sauces, has difficulty with some textures and prefers certain foods. He will try new things, but if I don't think he will actually like it I prefer to do that at home rather than paying full price for a meal he'll take a bite of and waste. I suspect we will do more quick service where we may order kids meals rather than sit down places simply because of that. We do look at the menus, and it helps if there are pictures of the food to see. He prefers pasta plain, meat with no sauces, raw vegetables (but not salad). He is well aware that he is "picky" and does try to want to try new things. He likes when we cruise because he can try new things and have a back up of something he knows he likes. And as for junk, yes, in public that's probably the safest choice for my son, restaurants like to offer "fancy" foods with sauces and such, he just wants things plain. But chicken nuggets and pizza are usually universal. At home though, he likes all kinds of meat and seafood, with raw vegetables (including broccoli).

As for the OP's original question, I'd look at the menus and see if there is something your son would eat, and if not, don't plan to eat there. I'm going through this now, and we are looking at menus together to see what it offers, the problem (of sorts) being that even the buffets we used to go to are now family style with a set offering, most likely that he won't eat. So breakfast is a top choice and any place that will serve steak, plain. Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

He can probably order off the kids menu at most TS restaurants, I did that well into my teens. At any prix fixe or AYCTE/buffet you'll be paying the adult price.

No offense intended, OP. I was just trying to show my perspective of picky eating.

Don't know anyone's age here but there are still a couple of generations around who were subjected to a very different eating philosophy than today. Both have their pros and cons. I never went to Disney as a child and I had to sit at the table until I ate everything. That was the norm back then and might be the norm for some still. So try to imagine peoples' astonishment that a kid who is at Disney might have problems finding at least something on the menu they can eat. Everyone has a very different perspective so don't take it personally. Choose the posts that are useful to you and scroll through the rest.

When my kids were that age we always had granola bars with us in case of emergency. But there was always something they could find at a restaurant and as others said, if you ask, Disney is usually very accommodating.

…this will be his first real time where he is going to eat off of the menu at table service restaurants instead of us schleping a bunch of food with us (yay!). Most places have some sort of variation of the only things he will eat besides breakfast food (pizza, chicken tenders, grilled cheese, lol)…

…If not then we will figure it out, no biggie.

if someone said that they were locking their kid in their room and not letting them go outside for fresh air and sunshine

I myself don’t think that these are equivalent at all…?

Am I the only one that hasn't seen any offensive posts in this thread? 🤷‍♀️

I am not saying they are offensive. People can have their takes on parenting and life in general and its ok if i don't agree with them. But as the OP, I just don't think the responses about children's bad eating habits and parenting that "allows" them are helpful answers to the specific question I asked about what Disney restaurants may be able to offer. This is a Disney trip planning site, not a parenting facebook group. If you have an answer to my planning question, I appreciate the feedback. If you don't, then I am just wondering why even bother responding.

Op, if it helps, don't forget to look at kid menu side dishes at TS meals - if he's a fan of breakfast foods (which you mention), often you can find fruit cups, tater tots, yogurts, grapes, applesauce, etc even on more adventurous TS restaurant menus. Don't be afraid to ask if you can just order him a few sides like this, and skip any app or main (to pick him up something from a CS later). And if you want to see if he'll experiment with mains, you all can see if he wants a taste from your dishes or to share with someone in your party an app or entree.

For me, I never even ask price when it comes to serving my allergy needs b/c I know I'm the tough diner, so my kids and spouse can worry about their food's expense, but for me, they worry that I eat.

My post wasn't directed at you, but I appreciate your response. Hope you get the answers you are looking for.
